Out of our eleven remaining games you can only realistically write off the ones away to Liverpool & Man City.

It's game on for the rest, especially as we have Spurs, Sheff Utd* and Wolves all at home.

*Arguably the greatest ever team to play in the Prem ;)

We'll be the only team to beat Liverpool this season. I predict 1-0 with Taylor scoring an Ian Brennan type goal. Remember?

Europa League - New target?

It would help then if Man U, Wolves and Arsenal all drop points today then? Here's hoping.

Sheff U and Spurs certainly helped yesterday.

I’ve said it many times, I was sat with a few of Burnley’s directors at a game last year, one of them said on more than one occasion we don’t want Europe, really annoyed me
I was chatting to Barry Kilby in the lounge at Athens airport. He was thrilled that we were playing in Europe. He said that he, like most of us old-timers, never thought he would ever get to see BFC playing in Europe again. He wasn't happy about the result or the referees decisions the previous evening but he was over the moon that we had been competitive at that level!

Of course it should be our target now. I will never understand anyone who would reject the opportunity. Same as fa or league cup. It's not all about money. Memories are more important.

Our home game against Sheffield United will be an important one. Similar to when we beat Leicester at home in April 2018.

Would be very handy if City's ban gets upheld. Also if United, Wolves and Arsenal progress to the later stages of the Europa League. The prospect of a Chsmpions league spot for the winner may affect their focus a bit.

Just shows what a difference 5 games can make. Before our last 5 results I'd have been looking for Man U and Wolves wins, now I'm looking for Watford and Norwich wins in todays matches. Long may it continue :)
Sadly, neither got close! However, we have every opportunity with home matches against the potential rivals.

Thinking exactly the same thing at lunchtime. Now I'm disappointed at the two home wins.

We go down another place, either way, Tim.
But I'd like a draw.
Would LOVE to finish above Arsenal.

Of course a draw is the best possible result. We drop to tenth no matter what the result is.

Just to let you know it is called the Europa League but first 4 or 5 rounds are a knockout competition.
And we know how much the club prioritises progress in this competitions.
The last time we managed to win 4 successive matches in a cup competition was 2008/2009 - maybe we should bring back goat face just for the Euro Matches?

It looks like there is going to be 8 teams going for 2 champions league and 3 euro places. Is it guaranteed we will still have 4 places in the champions league if city are banned

No, didn't say that at all. I think the first target always has to be ensuring you stay up. It's a bit like the old one we got from Stan that we'd get to 50 points and then crack on and see where it takes us.

I'd love to win all eleven of the final games and get another 33 points.

If we need another 4 points for survival then that means it'll be a lower points tally required for us to get into Europe.

You really think four teams out of the bottom six are going to improve their form so dramatically that we need 41 points?

Paul Weller mentioned the club may be for sale a few weeks ago.
I would have thought the directors would have a much more saleable asset if the club was in Europe.

If I was a director wanting to sell the club, I would be telling SD to go full out for a European position.

5th and 6th, or maybe 6th and 7th if City remain banned, would go into the group stages directly (assuming the top sides win the two cups, and God knows what happens with City being in one of the finals against Villa).

It could be very tasty to go for that and avoid the pre season disruption.

Everton have a shocking run in, as have the Blades, so they are gone. It will be two of Wolves, Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenal we have to finish above. Unlikely, but possible. Two of them have to come to us.

I can see Spurs falling away as well, doesn't look a happy camp there to me. But realistically we're going to have to still finish above United, Wolves or Arsenal. I think we'll finish quite strongly but fall just short. Hope I'm wrong though.

This is still my belief also. I have never changed my opinion on this. I think the dropping of one or two (or 3 or 4) players for these games caused a bad internal problem. It affected morale.

It's no good mate, you're not going to conivnce the anti-Europe lot. They think success is measured by the amount of money we have, it's the new type of fan these days. PL at all costs - sod trying to actually win anything or having European adventures, the romance is gone from the game for many.

If Man city win the league cup 7th will get the Europa spot otherwise itll be villa.

I presume that if the winner of the FA cup is outside the top six then 6th place wont get a Europa spot either.

Wolves are tearing up the Europa League this season and are only five points off fourth in the Premier League. Plus they've been putting out strong teams in both competitions despite having a small squad. The idea that we can't compete on both fronts is nonsense.

Where and how do you think Wolves have been acquiring players to allow them to do that?

That's beside the point. I'm not saying we should be competing for 4th spot or the Europa League, just that Wolves are proof you can play in two competitions with minimal rotation without performing worse in either.

Well yes, but the point I was making was how City’s ban affects the league cup element. Likely to be 7th rather than Villa if City win the league cup but not certain (if it was certain then your above scenario is also my understanding of the rules).

Agreed.

Arsenal have played just 4 away games in Europe this season. Wolves have played 7, 2 before the league season started.

Neither seem terminal. Home games are no different from any midweek fixture, the Sundays take some getting used to but we get chopped and changed anyway for TV and at least Wolves know for sure they will be Thursday/Sunday. Pre season disruption affects things and indeed it affected Wolves, but they soon recovered.

Fair do's bud but why don't you think we will finish in the top ten? We are currently 10th with a less than problematic run in of fixtures. Theoretically we could still of course be relegated but I don't see that either.

Only the League Cup winner gets a European place. The runner-up doesn't get in by default. Last year Man City won it but didn't need the Europa place so the place went to 7th in the League; this year, if they win it but (for different reasons) don't need the Europa place, it will almost certainly be the same again. I haven't seen it formally confirmed, but I can't see any reason to change the rule.

Pretty sure I've seen it confirmed somewhere. If City win either cup the European places go on league position, whether their ban is upheld or not.

Ready to be shot down but here go'es .If City are banned and finish 2nd . 1, 3, 4, 5 go in CL. That leaves 6, 7, 8 in EL. If Wolves, Man Utd or Arsenal win this years EL they go in to CL so 9th place could go in to EL

We can't have more than 7 teams in Europe. In that scenario we'd have 5 teams in the CL and just 2 in the Europa.

The Mighty Clarets will swarm across the sea, Bosscat. Villa without Heaton...nah. I agree.
