Re: Coronavirus
Absolutely right. 650,000 people die each year from seasonal Flu. 10,000 of them in the UK and we have a vaccine for that and it still kills people.
Some of the posters on here need to get a sense of perspective.
One poster claims to have bought Hazmat suits for his family. He probably hasn't actually. He's just one of the many fear mongers on here.

Why do you discount the epidemiologists who estimate a 60% infection rate and a 1% IFR if this went through the population? Have you seen some other estimates?Gordaleman wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 1:47 pmAbsolutely right. 650,000 people die each year from seasonal Flu. 10,000 of them in the UK and we have a vaccine for that and it still kills people.

I'm not sure what your point is about the fact we have a vaccine for flu. That would mean that this novel virus with no vaccine is more likely to do harm, wouldn't it?

No doubt the fearmongers will now jump on the case of the British 'Diamond Princess' passenger dying, (Not yet comfirmed by the way.) but it has to be said that the authorities in charge handled that situation very badly.

check airline websites if you are travelling. there are some destinations that are operating health checks (temp check, at minimum). If you are unwell for another reason - eg. cold, winter flu - you run the risk of being quarantined on the assumption that you my have covid-19.
(I think I'm done now)
"Italian far-right leader Matteo Salvini plans to hold a serious of events over the coming weeks in the capital London, Brighton (East Sussex county) and Liverpool (Merseyside county)".
I have been warned/told to stay away as there will be demonstrations and large crowds expected, this is a security warning regarding clashes and avoiding trouble, given this virus issue it might have been a good time to stop it but then of course we have the other crowds and we know what will be said. I have no clue as to why and Italian far-right is actually ding anything in the UK though.

Re: Coronavirus
It's spreading slowly because the world is now aware of it. When it started in Wuhan. no one knew about it until a lot of people were infected. Therefore there were a lot more people spreading the disease. Now, cases in Wuhan and greater China are dropping fast.claret2018 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 2:04 pmFair enough, that was a poorly thought out post.
Is anyone else surprised by how slowly it is spreading? I always assumed that these things would affect the entire world within days, given the amount of travel that takes place every day.
There have been far worse Coronavirues than this one. MERS and SARS had far higher death rates and we lived through those.
I have no doubt, that one day, a virilant disease will come along and kill millions (Probably a Flu variant.) but it's not this one.
Re: Coronavirus
I really hope you are correct on this one but I suspect you will be proved wrong with millions infected and only 100 million around the worldi to kill a million
If it behaves as Spanish flu according to the N Eng J Med today’s toll would be 200 million
Travel is more common these days and more so by air so I think it will run its course over then next 12 months but hope I am wrong and you are the correct one

You missed YET.
The big fear is not what the virus is, but rather it’s potential to mutate. It has displayed it can cross species, which is a pretty good sign that potentially it could mutate into a Proper killing virus of plague proportions if we don’t deal with it quickly....
Signs are that could be around for years... only adding to its threat.

First thing - and maybe this had already been posted on earlier pages - best site for Covid-19 data tracking is Johns Hopkins CSSE:
https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboar ... 7b48e9ecf6
Last updated 10:03:12 (UTC): Total Confirmed 83,704; Recovered 36,665; Deaths 2,859.
But, database isn't perfect. N.Ireland is showing as 1 case; but, nothing for Great Britain (or England, Wales and Scotland, separately). There was data there an hour earlier, either 16 or 19 (I forget). I suspect the US recording has been thrown by Wales reporting a case - and they are now working out where Wales is, possibly previously having "England" down as "United Kingdom."
So, in the 4:23:03 p.m. update Total Confirmed 83,867; Recovered 36,686; Deaths 2,867.
United Kingdom is back on their map: 19 cases, including 8 recovered.
Northern Ireland is also on their map: 1 case.
Has Johns Hopkins given N.Ireland independence from UK?

Re: Coronavirus
News tonight that the government is considering more widespread restrictions, including possibly postponing or cancelling sporting fixtures.
Obviously the health of people comes first but it will be interesting if the football season ends early, to see what happens to league positions etc.. Will we have a 'Pools panel' type scenario, deciding unplayed games? That would cause some arguments especially where promotion and relegation is concerned.

It certainly won't be people guessing the results.
Behind closed doors or all declared 0-0 draws depending on the circumstances.
Newcastle will, by the way, be shaking hands (unless the situation changes before tomorrow). They are not shaking hands at their training sessions. It never ceases to surprise me how straightforward information gets mangled by people.

Re: Coronavirus
Flu is the really dangerous one in my opinion. Between 1918 and 1919, flu killed between 20 and 40 million people. More than were killed in the Great war.
Bird Flu is the strain that really worries the scientific community.
H5N1 (since 1997)
H7N9 (since 2013)
H5N6 (since 2014)
H5N8 (since 2016)
Although H5N1, H7N9 and H5N6 don't infect people easily and aren't usually spread from human to human, several people have been infected around the world, leading to a number of deaths. H5N8 has not infected any humans worldwide to date.
The worry is, if any of the above mutate in some way, which virus's frequently do.

True, at 1 point I'd said I'd had enough & wasn't going to continue, a question got asked about if I'd watched the news & I continued from that point, it's quite interesting for me & other people because it's constantly changing, & some people can't agree on the severity of the virus, but point taken TN I should be considering a exit strategy by now I can take the hint.

Re: Coronavirus
SARS was different in many ways. In terms of the numbers infected, it was easier to contain as transmission was much more frequent when symptoms were present. This one is transmitted before symptoms appear. In terms of mortality rates, we don't know yet, but estimates seem to be SARS was 3 to 10 times worse (much more towards the 10 times as far as I can see but I guess we'll not know until this one's much closer to over)
