Just a thought, people are talking about playing EPL fixtures in empty stadiums, while meanwhile, around 2,000,000 people are crammed together using the London Tube system every-day .......
Just heard something similar on the radio, from some health chap. There seems a bit of rush to cancel mass-attendance events, football, concerts etc. But his point was even if someone is affected, they only pose an infection risk to the person sat next to them. If that person goes to the pub, supermarket or shops instead of the match, they'll infect as many people.

Everyone's going to get it. Might as well carry on with life.

A few points:

It is most likely a good thing that governments are taking this seriously given that there is currently no vaccine and that the science/medical community are still learning about the virus.

The population of China is around: 1,437,510,400
The current number of cases in China 80,261 Source: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-51235105
Percentage of Chinese population with the virus 0.0000558%

In 41 days the cases reported in China has risen from 615 to 80,261. A 130 fold increase.

From 8th to 16th February Chinese cases rose from 34,605 to 68,566.
From 16th - 24th February Chinese cases rose from 68,566 to 77,234.
From 24th Feb - 3rd March Chinese cases rose from 77,234 to 80,261.
(Source: China National Health Commission WHO 3 Mar 0600 GMT)

The number of reported cases in China is still rising but the rate of increase is slowing down.

Part of the unknown factor of the virus is that we don't know how many unreported cases there are.

In the UK, numbers are still low. With spring on the way the virus might hopefully not spread as fast.

There may be a vaccine available later in the year or early next year.

51 people in UK have the virus, none have died, so what percentage of the population has been affected? How many people have been diagnosed with terminal cancer in the same period...get a grip...

You only have to go in any supermarket to see that hand sanitizers have sold out.

A bit of an overreaction

Exactly, we're in Tenerife at the moment, not a million miles from the H10 hotel, everything is normal, the press report the facts, not the over reaction, worst case scenario the British media spew out

Early days? How do you know that, how do you know it hasn't peaked? Nobody knows,so let's just report the facts...if you haven't been to Italy, stuck safely in a 4 star Tenerife hotel, or been in contact with someone who has, the known facts say you won't catch it, but just in case let's empty the supermarket and burden the NHS

So 10 days ago 28 countries had declared cases, now its 79.
5 countries have declared it contained.
1 is seeing it reducing, China.

So in 73 countries it is increasing, the containment actions appear not to be working.

The reason China is allegedly having success it is people are confined to their homes and have been for 5 weeks. The reporter on Sky just now was saying they go out once a week to buy supplies.

Would we accept that??

Also today China declared if you want to go to China from a virus hot spot, you will have to go into Quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

If you have a thermometer, keep checking your temperature, if it stays around 37 you should be fine.

If it gets to 39, phone 111.

Not a lot worse than it is already.

This virus is nothing compared with some diseases we don't panic about. Flu kills 650,000 every year, including 10,000 in the UK. Malaria kills 400,000 people every year. TB kills 40,000 people every single DAY.

Try to keep a sense of perspective.

It was a lot quitter travelling in to London today and again a lot quieter returning home.

Maybe it is a great wheeze (see what I did there?) to have a bit of a lie in and "work" from home.

OK. I'll wash my hands and get my coat. ;)

Grumps saying it may well have peaked here.
I say its a long way off peaking

3rd Feb 24,000 cases worldwide
17th Feb 46,000 cases
2nd Mar. 92,000 cases

Doubling every 14 days and the death rate compared to closed cases is 6%.
Thats not scaremongering but a fact.

If that doubling every 14 days keeps happening in 7 months time 1.5bn of the Worlds population wiill have been infected.

Those saying there’s nothing to worry about are living in cloud cuckoo land.

The economic effect could be devastating.

Cant see many airlines and holiday companies surviving.

Its a real fact. That is the % at the moment across the whole world. It may well come down over time but right now thats what it is.

Death rate based on total infected is 2.8%

The problem is serious guys

Why stop at 7 months? In 8 months, 6bn will have been infected; in 9 months, everyone will have had it 3 times; in 10 months, we'll all have had it 12 times. (Just an illustration of the flaw in your geometric progression.)

But even if your scenario is correct, it won't kill the holiday companies. If 45 million people die worldwide, which is 3% of your projected cases. it is about a quarter of the total who normally die each year worldwide; and even if it's more, the excess death will no doubt be borne (as they always are) by the poorer countries of (especially) Africa. So in the UK, the GDP takes a few percent hit and a lot of older people die and a lot of younger people feel like they have flu; that won't stop the survivors from wanting holidays this year, next year, and for the foreseeable future. Your apocalyptic predictions are, still, way over the top. Thankfully.

You have no actual idea about how I feel about this. I am someone on the high risk list (immunosuppressed) but I also have a brain and quite frankly the idiots who have no idea what they’re talking about are causing panic. I am concerned that this virus will affect me, so I am taking preventative measures as far as I can. What I can’t stop is stupid people who cause panic. I went to Tesco tonight, they had absolutely no cleaning products on the shelves - people are panic buying, idiots influenced by like minded idiots.

What gets my goat is people who can’t find it in themselves to cover their mouths when they cough, or wash their hands when they’ve been for a p!ss, or dickheads who find nothing wrong with people p!ssing in a f#cking sink...

You can't control other people's hygiene, none of us can, look after numero uno, you are pi**ing into the wind trying to do anything different, as long as you sanitise properly & mop up with bleach & disinfectant, you should at the very minimum stop the bugs from darkening your doorstep.

You’re right, I can’t control other people’s hygiene - but I guarantee you that the types of people who couldn’t give a rats ar5e about hygiene and cough and sneeze everywhere without consideration are the same type of person panicking about this virus and buying the supermarket because it’s going to be bad. I’ve seen it for myself tonight.

What relevance is that? But yes, I am concerned people who think it’s OK to p!ss in a sink also think that this virus is something very serious to worry about, all idiots...
Well you make reference correctly as to washing hands.but then kind of discount the seriousness of this virus. I'm in your camp there's panic being created as ever by the media etc.and panic buying which is Ludicrous I don't buy into either .....but there's some mileage in this one yet.for what it's worth were not doomed yet.

Interesting comments coming out if the WHO. They seem to be moving towards higher % fatality rates (still in that low single figures range though) but more confident that containment is possible with the right actions. Also very complimentary about the Chinese healthcare system and ascribing a fair degree of the low fatality percentages they have achieved outside the epicentre to that. And contrasting that healthcare with Italy and Iran.

I have never discounted the seriousness of this virus, I have only called out people consistently incorrectly concluding wrong information from data and demonstrating that they don’t understand what they’ve talking about.

I thought these bugs were airborne?
It's adopting a complete hygienic routine with no cutting corners, leave absolutely nothing to chance, doing things you don't need to do will encourage you to do things you need to do

Be concerned, BE VERY CONCERNED, the poo hasn't even started to hit the fan yet, when all the germs & bugs start running amok it will, Zlatan even knows himself some people don't give a s**t about hygiene, it's fertile breeding ground.
That doesn't answer the question. As sure as eggs what?

I have no idea what your latest "germs and bugs running amok" comment is about. Is that this virus, or are you now fearful of other "germs and bugs" too?

Certainly not me, you get rinsed in supermarkets for cleaning supplies, I'd be in home bargains or Wilkinson ect, not Tesco's, I used to work on a landfill site (leachate) it'd have to be a super strength force to knock me over, my immunity as probably resisted the A to Z of bugs over the years.

Everything, but mainly the virus, you adopt safe cleaning methods you minimise the risk from everything, but mainly the virus anything else constitutes a added bonus.

Maybe you should have a word with all these governments, the World Health Organisation and the management of the NHS. You seem to know more than the experts.
While you're at it tell them they're wasting their time planning for a crisis because you know a chemist who knows all about this disease.
And no I'm not panicking. I havent got a face mask, I'm going out to public places and going about normal life. I'm just going against the fact that you know better than all the experts in the world! Btw what's your medical credentials?

I'm pretty sure all these diseases have a vaccine.
Oh just answer these questions. Have fearmongers locked down towns in Northern Italy? Have fearmongers arranged the NHS to raise a level 4 alert? Have fearmongers arranged for all these governments to put plans into place to combat the threat?

Yes, those diseases MIGHT have a vaccine but they STILL kill the figures I quoted. I don't understand your argument at all. What you seem to be saying is that because a disease might have a vaccine, it doesn't matter that it kills people. Huge amounts of people, yet we don't panic about them.

Everybody is praying for a vaccine for Covid-19, as though that would be a miracle cure, yet other diseases WITH vaccines still kill millions of people. Covid-19 has only killed 3,000 in the entire world.

As for the fear, that's the fear of the unknown. Covid-19 is a new pathogen and governments are wary. That doesn't mean they know anything, it just means that they are being careful. Now get a grip of your knickers and stop panicking.
