To be fair they go on about the "hard times" and life back in the day so it'll be easy for them. I mean, they survived the blitz and stormed the beaches of Normandy after all.

I must admit that today's increase in the number of cases to only 116 surprised me a little. I did think that it would be more than that. So much for the 'Grains of rice' theory that was put about on here earlier.

Clearly, it's going to spread a lot more, unless we are very lucky and the governments response of a further £46 million just shows how totally inept their response has been. Not a single extra penny has been given to the NHS, although Boris claims they will get everything they need. (Where have we heard THAT before?)

Things could change very rapidly before next week of course, but the Budget on Wednesday should be very illuminating about the goverment's response, or lack of response.

I am currently living in the Philippines with my Fiancee but I have just heard that a man has reportedly died with the coronavirus in Milton Keynes where my main home is
Apparently he was in his late 80's and had underlying health conditions

The patient is believed to be male and was in his late 80s. It is understood he had underlying health conditions.

The support that is likely to be needed is in the community for the elderly who get this. There is no treatment other than respiratory support for those who develop lung infection which puts them into respiratory failure so even the elderly who will be seen off more frequently the majority could be managed at home provided the support is there. It is the ITU units that will have to deal with a significant proportion of those who become severely ill and no country can deal with such an increase in workload that is likely if containment and delay fail.
ITU consultants cannot appear overnight.
In the 69/70 outbreak of flu it was pretty bad on the NHS but there were far more beds and a lower occupancy rate so that I imagine it was easier to cope than it is going to become.
If the new cases are lower than expected today; wait until tomorrow.
For tthose who didn't watch question time, for once it was well worth a watch. I thought Matt Hancock and others came over well

If nothing had been mentioned at all regarding the virus in the first place I wonder if people would have noticed anything different In terms of the numbers getting Ill?

Or would it have just been put down to seasonal flu being slightly up than in previous years.

The government is "looking at" the isolation of whole households. But I'm not sure how they would police such a thing. You know if people get told to stay at home, that some will think "sod it" and go out anyway.

Good point. There certainly wouldn't be widespread fear and panic.

There are now around 100,00 cases world wide. Let's say Britain gets ten times that, a million cases. There are 49,000 Citys, towns and villages in the UK. That's only 20 people per community. Would we even know about them if it wasn't all over the press?

Have you still not understood that "exponential" growth doesn't imply any particular speed of growth?

100k have caught the virus worldwide, can you imagine what percentage of the population that is? Even if that figure trebles in the next week, we are still talking miniscule numbers, and even if 5 percent of those die, do we still panic?

There does seem to be a lot of hype. To put things in perspective 1.5M people died of tuberculosis in 2018. Keeps the media boffins happy this Coronavirus filling up newspaper space and tv airtime.

Grumps,
Thought you suggested it may well have peaked 5 days ago. Thats looks pretty silly now.

Those infected and those dying are doubling every fortnight. Do that calculation for the next 32 weeks and see what answer you get.

The NHS has this morning said that up to 80% of the population could be infected and with a death rate of 1% thats an extra 500,000 deaths in the UK

And people still say its not as bad as flu - unbelievable.

Hope for the best but plan for the worse. !!!

I don't know where you got that idea from. I'm expecting thousands of cases, but as Grumps said, that's still a miniscule amount.

Look at my earlier post where I gave a worst case scenario of a million infections.

No panic buying in level headed South Yorkshire. Shelves seemed fuller than usual if anything.

Maybe the 24hr news could just update us with recovery numbers every day, so we can all chill out a bit, realise we're more than likely not going to die and get back to normal.

Where did I say it had peaked? I know it fits your argument but please don't misquote, what I said, just so you understand it was, how do you know it hasn't peaked,as in you,the self proclaimed expert, I followed it up with, nobody knows if it has or hasn't.. .what I quoted this afternoon is facts, I realise you struggle with facts and would prefer to peddle your scaremongering but in doing so don't use my misquoted posts as evidence to back up your googled argument.

So how come we're not supposed to be touching each other, let alone shaking hands, all the hand sanitizer in the entire universe has been stockpiled by some "Mondeo Man" from Surrey, PL football matches are in danger of being called off, as are all public gatherings, people are wearing giant person sized condoms whilst on public transport, schools may shut and hospitals may spontaneously combust due to the amount of people trying to access them, YET I can still go into Tescos and rummage through the loose baking potatoes, apples, courgettes, peppers, aubergines and spring onions (to name a random sample) in order to find the best ones (cos I ain't buying crap!) knowing full well that hundreds of other people have also rummaged through them and just like them I will happily throw back the numerous rejects which don't meet my exacting standards? All things listed there where people TEND to eat the skin or outer coating! Makes me laugh it does!!! (I was actually ejected from Tescos for trying to apply hand sanitizer to a loose red pepper which I didn't even want. Apparently it affects the taste!)

Burnley football club now announcing they are putting extra sanitisers in toilets, don't attend if you've been to certain area of the world
Have they checked their loos? Bob lord stand, 30 urinals? How many sinks? A hand dryer at the opposite side of the room to the sink, they've never cared about hygiene before, why now? You've more chance of catching cancer from the smokers they do nothing about in the toilet than this virus.

The amount of blokes I see who don’t wash their hands hands after going to the loo is alarming. There are some repulsive dirty b*ggers about. It’s alright putting hand sanitiser in there but I wonder how many will use it. I bet there are plenty who don’t wash hands after a number 2 and then go and eat a pie.

They’ve also closed the meeting zone for fans to get players autographs which is a shame because we had passes for tomorrow’s game

Crickey Grumps you should be renamed Aesop given your prediction of the high risk of cancer from passive smoking compared with the risks from a virus that spreads easily and for which we have no immunity
The missing factor is what percentage of us do have some immunity to it
But pretty certain I would prefer exposure to passive smoke than this bugger over the next 6 months

How did I know it hadnt peaked.

Because I read the facts and came to a logical conclusion.

Don’t want to p!ss on your chips, but I don’t see 80% of China infected, and it is now deemed under control there
Have a look in 9-12 months as to what it will be

I said this would happen 5 weeks and got ridiculed.

The most vulnerable of us are the most effected by these medical shortages. It is a very worrying time.
Finally today got my meds with one day to spare.

Ok now for another month.
