Interesting FACT on tonight's 6 pm news.

Of the 100,000 people worldwide who have contracted this virus, 55,000 have fully recovered already. So instead of sying that there are 100,000 cases, why doesn't the media ease people's fear and give true figures of those who actually have it.

No doubt, that a proportion of the 163 cases in the UK, have already recovered as well.

It will get a lot worse, but not as bad as the doomsters would have us believe.

Have a look in 9-12 months as to what it will be
I’ll just do that eh, maybe you should too. 12 months time there’ll likely be a vaccine and also a toilet roll surplus

I wouldn't rely too much on a vaccine. There's a vaccine for Flu and it still kills thousands every year in the UK.

In the unlikely event that this virus ever comes near Flu's figures, then maybe I'll worry a little bit. It killed 100, 000 in Britain in 1989 / 90. Until then, I'll wash my hands and carry on as normal.

Out tonight to the Comedy Night at Nelson Cricket Club and on'turf tomorrow. It's all go.

Yes, I've seen that before. Not sure about just how up to date it is but currently only 23, 000 active case in China. That probably brings the world total down to about 27,000. Not exactly biblical proportions, is it?

The elderly are the ones who are most at risk from this and flu. To cheer us oldies up, a recent paper in the Annals of Internal Medicine (an observational study from workers in Wales) suggests that flu vaccine has little benefit in the elderly and this could also be true with this virus when/if we have a vaccine

I hope so too, and I don’t know what demographic you fall into, but I do fall into one of the high risk categories (immunosuppressed) so perhaps I should be more concerned. The thing is, I’m also scientifically minded, and I understand the odds, and I’m not actually worried at all.

This is a good site to look at cause of death in England and Wales:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulation ... ables/2018

Copy/paste their introductory comments:

When accounting for population size and age-structure, age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) for females increased by 0.1%, however, for males ASMRs continued to decrease by 0.3%.
In 2018, there were 541,589 deaths registered in England and Wales, an increase of 1.6% compared with 2017 (533,253); this is the highest annual number of deaths since 1999.
The North East was the region of England with the highest ASMRs and London was the lowest for both males and females.
Deaths due to dementia and Alzheimer disease continued to increase and remained the leading cause of death, accounting for 12.8% of all deaths registered.

My calc: 541,589 deaths, 12.8% dementia and Alzheimer = 69,323.

The report, further down, reports on leading causes of deaths, split male/female and by age group. For males, across all ages, leading cause at 13.2% of male total is Ischaemic heart diseases.

Those that are inclined can study the rest of the ONS stats anytime they care.

The world has gone absolutely bonkers. It’s a newer version of flu for goodness sake. Coronavirus affects the same age group as ordinary flu. I have no idea why “Don’t Panic, Don’t Panic” Captain Mainwaring from Dad’s Army has been let loose to become editor of all the newspapers + hosting all tv + radio stations. Get a grip.

I was commenting on your schoolboy error regarding Dad's Army.

But you are also wrong to be so dismissive. The concerted efforts of governments of all types and many countries suggest that, if we didn't take action, it would be much more serious than any flu we've seen for a long time.

Well, that's a detailed and reasoned response.

So, why are so many governments taking unusual steps to stop or slow transmission? I'm interested.

Good question, I don't know the answer because it defies all logical behaviour. Over 20,000 people in the UK have been tested for COVID-19... 164 have it. Out of a population of ~70 million. Is it really a big issue? Most people, and this is from medics, will have a mild illness. Some with underlying health issues will die. It's hardly Ebola.

Here's the reason for the caution by governments.

It's because we don't know, but better to be prepared than not.

It's not a conspiracy. No one "knows" what's happening.

It doesn't mean that loads of people are going to die, it's just a precaution.

Random people saying they know what's happening are lying.

Who is saying they knows what is happening?

There's showing caution and there is feeling mass hysteria. When people are stripping supermarket shelves because 2 people have died of a strain of flu then we are in the mass hysteria camp.

You could die crossing the road but you take care, crack on + cross the road.

This current “the world has gone mad + we are all gonna die” approach is way over the top craziness. So now you have people stockpiling all sorts of stuff - toilet rolls!! People not getting on aeroplanes. The stock market lemmings all throwing in their chips. When in reality most folk will have a runny nose + a sore throat at worst. But hey ho let’s all panic + self quarantine under the bed just in case.

Might be the first guy in history to think 6 inches is bigger than it actually is. You had about 3.5 foot at the front.

Bigger issue was probably that your windscreen was opaque.

Now you're overreacting by saying we're "all" overreacting. You're as bad, spreading the fear of fearmongers that aren't as prevalent as you say they are.
There not as prevalent as I think? Evidence would say otherwise, companies cancelling travel. James Bond being postponed until November, talk of banning the over 70s from football games...

Might be the first guy in history to think 6 inches is bigger than it actually is. You had about 3.5 foot at the front.

Bigger issue was probably that your windscreen was opaque.
Dude really It was inches not feet!

3.5 feet is like 40 inches! no chance.

And yeah, I drained about 3 litres of water from MY CAR DOOR haha. It's ******.

It’s a miracle we all survived swine flu. That was meant to kill most of us off wasn’t it?
This is flu, maybe it’s a bad flu but it’s still flu and a new flu no one on earth before a month or 2 ago had ever had and therefore no one is immune to it so of course it will have a higher infection and death rate. Human history has had influenza pandemics throughout history. The virus is out there now, it’s too late to stop it and make it go away. It’s in nearly every country on Earth now for crying out loud. It can not be stopped. We just have to carry on and hope you don’t get it, just the same as we have been doing our whole lives already in regards to normal flu and all other diseases you can get. What happened to put British way of getting in with life no matter what was thrown our way?

You know when you say things like It [flu] killed 100,000 in Britain in 1989/90, is there no part of you thinks "Hold on. That seems an absurdly high number, I'd better just check that it's right before I post it"?

Actually, no, because I was attributing those figure from an earlier post that showed exactly those figures.

A quick glance through your link, doesn't seem to show any confirmation or denial of those figures.. Maybe you can point it out to me?

As it happens, I was in the company of an old lady tonight who vividly remembers the 1989 Flu outbreak, and she concurred with the death figure I gave,

When you start with, "This is flu..." when it's not flu, that at least saves me reading the rest.

It must have been a very quick glance not to spot it.

Still, much better to rely on an old lady than the now multiple sources you've been given showing your numbers to be, yet again, way off.

Yes. I know her.

She counted and disposed of every single dead body.

To be fair they go on about the "hard times" and life back in the day so it'll be easy for them. I mean, they survived the blitz and stormed the beaches of Normandy after all.
Was it Monty Python who said...... I died in two world wars for people like you?
