Can you name all these players?
Seen this team pic today. I don't think it is difficult to work out which season it is but - how many can you name?

Re: Can you name all these players?
Reminds me of the tale of the 2 Glenns, one of whom wasn't fit to tie the boots of the other; Glenn Roeder, odious man.

Re: Can you name all these players?
Was presented with this shirt by Gordon Cowans. Lovely fella who spent a while chatting, on a stadium tour December '97. Chris Woods was equally friendly and had a lot of time to chat. Met Williams, Ford, Barnes, Harrison, Waddle and Roeder who were less friendly. Roeder was downright rude. Thought Waddle was arrogant but was told he was just not too great at meeting people. Got the impression Roeder was really in control of that partnership.

Re: Can you name all these players?
It seemed to be an open secret that Waddle was basically "fronting" the thing, but hadn't the experience or the qualities to be an effective manager. Consequently he was absent from training most of the time and aloof when he wasn't. Roeder was effectively in charge on a daily basis, but he was disillusioned with the project pretty much from day one and was simply useless! I once "met" Waddle on the petrol station on Trafalgar St after a game and tried to "nicely" exchange a few words with him regarding things Claret. He totally blanked me and walked away.Claret32yrs wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:39 pmWas presented with this shirt by Gordon Cowans. Bloody hell Winstanley on the back row next to Big Vince. Vince needs a hair cut but I'm not telling him!

Re: Can you name all these players?
It's Marco Gentile ( back row, 3rd from right ), but could easily pass for Chris Eagles in an I/D parade ...
Re: Can you name all these players?
That was my first year as a season ticket holder (1997/8 I think) and I remember being so excited because we had Chris Waddle as player manager. What a come down! It took us until the middle of September to score a goal (away at York, I remember getting lost on the way there) and another month to win a match. We were an awful side. I bought the home shirt and wore it to the 2009 playoff final. The away shirt was a horrible claret and gold affair. The only good thing to come out of that season was that we signed Andy Payton (and managed to stay up by the skin of our teeth on the final day). Who could have imagined then that we would be a mid table Premier League side two decades later.
Teasdale out!

Our current top scorer is there. Back row, keepers kit on.

I went to Watford first game under Waddle, opposite end to where away fans are located now. It was baking hot, we had a huge following and were absolutely crap.

Re: Can you name all these players?
Our Club has an awful lot for which to thank Francis Stanley Ternent, and " Sir " Barry Kilby .... those two together with Andy Payton's 61 League & Cup goals in 113 appearances in our last two and a half seasons in the third tier before we were promoted, are the foundations on which the Club still stands today ....

Shudder, that was hard watching that season. Went Aug to Nov only winning one game - not sure how we survived being that bad. It was the hope that made it worse, Chris Hoddle was a footballing legend for me (though in hindsight never really showed any management potential).

Am I alone in being a massive fan of Marlon Beresford?
Who do YOU consider to be Burnley's best ever goalkeeper?

Re: Can you name all these players?
Since I first went on a match (1975) then Heaton and Pope are the top two. I’d put Heaton slightly ahead at the moment but Pope is gaining fast and unless he leaves the club soon is likely to overtake.

Re: Can you name all these players?
I would hope so - still believe we'd have gone down that season in 1998 had we not sold him, so bad was he. Woods came in and did a decent job which helped keep us up. When Beresford came back he was more embarrassing than Michopoulos.

Re: Can you name all these players?
Andy Cooke's role in that season must never be over looked. His brace on the final day was enough for the freedom of the town. (Apparently he was offered it and said he really didn't want it. Which I kind of understand tbh!)

Re: Can you name all these players?
We were in the Red Lion that night, it was absolutely rammed. The players walked, led by Cooke, and the crowd just parted. I've never seen anyone get to a bar so quickly. I suspect he had plenty of offers to buy him a pint.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:36 amAndy Cooke's role in that season must never be over looked. Are you having a laugh? Wasn't that the most hated strip we have ever had because it was waaay to close to the clowns outfit Rovers wear? I thought it was awful anyway.

Certainly not Beresford. I think people get misty-eyed about Marlon because of the absolute dross we previously had between the sticks.

He was a decent England manager. Statistically up there as one of the better ones until his 'Eileen Drewery' remarks. Glenn btw,Stanbill05 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 7:42 amChris Hoddle was a footballing legend for me (though in hindsight never really showed any management potential).

Re: Can you name all these players?
Agree. Certainly better than what we had in the dark days. I am sure we put 5 past him when he was on loan at Northampton. OK keeper for the level. Nicky Walker stands out as one from that era (possibly a bit later) who was excellent.

Andrew Strauss, next to Little top row, 2nd from the left?
Uncanny.
And many thought it was only Beefy who could play both.

Me too ... it doesn't remind me of any other club's shirt ...as far as I know nobody else has ever worn Claret and Sky blue quarters.

Are you getting it mixed up with the jade and black halves shirt? This resembled a shirt more akin to the 'Gas'. I quite liked it. The Jade and Black number was basically a Rovers shirt in different colours. Didn't go down too well.

Re: Can you name all these players?
I know the one you mean yeah, but no, I genuinely didn't like it. I just don't like quarters and halves - leave them to rugby. I don't know how the fans feel but have you seen the Juventus shirt? How could they change one of the most famous and recognisable shirts in football into that awful design? And Barcelona with that bloody awful chequered thing they now have. Terrible.Claret32yrs wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 4:00 pmAre you getting it mixed up with the jade and black halves shirt? This resembled a shirt more akin to the 'Gas'. I quite liked it. I'm just a traditionalist. Having said that my favourite Burnley shirt of all time was the solid claret one with the V. Circa early/mid 70s. Loved that one - it had a kind of South American feel to it.

Can remember going to either Rotherham, or Donny, for a night game and leaving my glasses in the car.
We were pretty low down, close to pitch level.
Couldn't for the life of me pick out our perfectly camouflaged players.
May as well not have been there.
