Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
He could definitely do with some help as he is either mentally unstable, a drunk or a bit of both. I also suspect like a lot of highly paid footballers, he may expect the Club to take responsibility for his irresponsibility and pay for his treatment.
Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
Bit of a pattern developing here.

Many including me did not as he had not kicked a ball in anger for 12 months - and proved correctcricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:23 amMany of us did. I for one thought he was an excellent calculated gamble.

I thought he would be a good signing for us, we all know what happened and then thought, well he's had his wake up call, just watch him go at Villa.
Obviously he doesn't give a Jota
In many ways I think it's very sad and hope he comes through this but he is his own worst enemy.

He should wangle a move to a lower league club. Blackpool, for instance, a place where he could throw his money around, sup and fight as much as he wanted.

Agree, he’s already achieved what most footballers won’t ever achieve in there careers in a lifetime & he’s likely to be a millionaire, maybe that’s enough, still doesn’t excuse him fighting in nightclubs or headbutting fellow professionals, he should retire or behave himself & knuckle down to getting his career back on track.KateR wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:25 pmI thought he would be a good signing for us, we all know what happened and then thought, well he's had his wake up call, just watch him go at Villa.

Totally agree no excuse, however there may be an underlining reason that none of us know about, mental health etc. I am convinced he will look back later when he is much older and think/know what an idiot he has been and am sure he will berate himself much more than any of us or Villa/Chelsea fans for example.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:32 pmAgree, he’s already achieved what most footballers won’t ever achieve in there careers in a lifetime & he’s likely to be a millionaire, maybe that’s enough, still doesn’t excuse him fighting in nightclubs or headbutting fellow professionals, he should retire or behave himself & knuckle down to getting his career back on track.
For us it's his 10 minutes of infamy, for him I suspect it will be a lifetime of regrets, regardless of how much money he has, although I agree it will soften the blow.

With the incredible man-management skills and faith that Dean Smith has shown in Drinkwater I fully expect Drinkwater to save Villa's season and avoid relegation, probably at our expense.

Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
From what I’ve read in the last two days, Dean Smith could be out of Villa before Drinkwater.

Interesting. Seems a bit late in the day to sack him, but the momentum of a new manager could just see them over the line.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 1:36 pmFrom what I’ve read in the last two days, Dean Smith could be out of Villa before Drinkwater.

"Mentally ill" seems a bit excessive. "Idiot who never learned self-control" might be nearer.

We shouldn't speculate on his mental health, nor should we use euphemisms such as 'demons', but he's demonstrated on a number occasions this year a lack of impulse control that could become more and more damaging as he becomes idle and no longer bound by the routines of a professional athlete. It's this which he needs to address for his own sake. The next time he decides he's fit to drive after a few bevvies could result in him hitting someone and killing them. Life ruining. The next time he decided violence is an appropriate response to a situation could see him kicking someone in the head. Potentially life ruining. I was quite particular in my use of the word 'superficial' earlier in the thread, which is all wealth is; a person's wealth might bring a level of luxury not afforded to others, but it isn't a bulwark against their own destructive impulses. It means nothing before a judge.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 1:01 pmPut it this way, I think lots of us would happily trade lifestyles with him despite the demons in the locker.

Are you seriously asking if I'd like lots of money? I'm still not sure what your angle is.
To elaborate a bit, I'd rather be austere and of clear conscience than wealthy and stressed. You can't escape your own head. But that's a false choice. Plenty of footballers are able to have both without harming other people. His money won't absolve him of his behaviour. I'm genuinely confused what your point is.

Aside from one season where Kante made Drinkwater look a million miles better than he actually is has he ever played well during the rest of his career?
He certainly doesn't seem to anymore ability than either Westwood or Cork.

Not sure how you can do a comparison between two players playing regularly and one who doesn’t play.

Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
I think he should be sacked for gross misconduct...and just maybe he will as his wages are likely to be greater than any incoming transfer fee.Spiral wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:14 amVilla beat us 2-1 at the Turf on NYD, signed Drinkwater six days later, got butchered 6-1 at home to City where Drinkwater made his debut, and have since picked up four points. We've picked up fifteen with one extra game played in that time. I'd say he's cursed, but in just the last eleven months he's been done for drink driving, got into an injury-causing scrap in a nightclub, and now this. Framed like that, he's a disgrace of a professional footballer and of no use to anyone at this point. The £10m he's still to pocket from Chelsea (contracted until 2022) might console him to some superficial extent, but people who pi$$ away their careers like this are usually pi$$ing away their life. It will hurt him in years to come if he doesn't address his attitude now. Needs help, if indeed he's willing to listen to anyone.

Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
To be honest, he's not performed to the standards expected on the pitch, the drink-driving offense reflects poorly on his employers, and he's now blown two chances in " loan " moves to try and get his form and career back on track. He couldn't really have any complaints if Chelsea cancelled his contract.turfytopper wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 5:10 pmI think he should be sacked for gross misconduct...and just maybe he will as his wages are likely to be greater than any incoming transfer fee.

Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
I listened to a podcast with Joey Barton and Gary Neville before where he said some players achieve in a season what most don’t in a career. And that’s it. It’s enough. They lose all motivation. And fergie would get shut.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:32 pmAgree, he’s already achieved what most footballers won’t ever achieve in there careers in a lifetime & he’s likely to be a millionaire, maybe that’s enough, still doesn’t excuse him fighting in nightclubs or headbutting fellow professionals, he should retire or behave himself & knuckle down to getting his career back on track.
That’s what looks to have happened here. He’s no drive.

Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
It’s a shame he isn’t as hard on a football pitch, mincing about putting half arsed performances in.
Re: Drinkwater headbutts teammate
Spot on.
He’s 30 year old and in the Premier League he’s has one maybe 2 good seasons. In his best season he had Kante and Marhez alongside him and Vardy up front having the season of his life and converting most of the chances the midfielders were giving him.
Chelsea paying £30m for him was madness - and with the benefit of hindsight Burnley and Villa taking him on loan after a couple of years of not getting anywhere near the Chelsea side was a big risk to say the least.
His lack of fitness and sharpness was the biggest noticeable issue when playing for Villa - by the time he had made his mind up what he was going to do the opposition had taken the ball off him or just ran past him !

Anyway, I’m nailing my colours to the mast...
Signing DD was with hindsight, a mistake. Without that hindsight, it was absolutely the right thing to do.
Could’ve been a superb signing. Wasn’t. We move on.

I wonder what Villa did to decide if Drinkwater would be a good fit for them. Would they have consulted Dyche?
