I suggest I am a realist based on the data.

As I have been right from the start on page 1 when I said this would be serious.

No one, at least, not me, said it wouldn't be serious. I think we all knew that from the start.

So I have just been into Tesco, honestly it was shocking - they had no toilet paper at all. Reluctantly I headed for the customer service and asked if they had any. A firm NO and a look in disgust was the answer.

Walking back to the toilets with my pants and trousers around my ankles was a walk I never want to do again.
That is funny!!

I am not going to go back through posts but I suggest that’s not quite true.

But let’s accept we are all on the same page now that it is serious.

I think it’s the level of serious we are debating now.

My wife works in the care industry. 2 of her clients went into hospital after a fall at home, contracted pneumonia and died. In the space of 10 days just a month ago.
Everybody who has died so far to my knowledge, have been elderly with or without underlying health issues.
Why dont we shut the country down for pneumonia!!!!!!

The only people who need worry are those elderly especially those with health problems. If we can concentrate on keeping them safe, and isolated as much as we can, the rest of us should welcome it. The science behind herding makes sense to me. Our own bodies fighting this virus is the best long term solution, but we certainly dont need to panic. Closing schools, banning large gatherings would just extend the time scale of this virus lasting, and the longer it lasts the harder it will be to protect those vulnerable elderly.

The general mood & feeling from the outset from a certain group of posters was it’s was nothing more than a sniffle & the all thing will blow over, It’s only until recently with the virus spreading & the death toll rising more people are starting to show interest with the realisation it’s serious.

Search if you like. I don't think I ever said it wasn't serious. What I did say was that it wasn't 'Doomsday' or 'The Apocalypse' as some were suggesting, and I stand by that.

Or perhaps this could have been avoided altogether long term with another more sensible suggestion, regarding the football I don’t think in April it’ll start back up again or it might for abit again & then cancelled again.

I've pondered and yep, it still seems stupid. And I popped in to see Hudson-Odoi and Arteta earlier and they agreed with me. Apparently Arteta ordered one on Tuesday, but cancelled it Friday. ;)

Re: Coronavirus

Post by Long Time Lurker » Fri Mar 13, 2020 7:05 pm

I currently have a dry cough, a tight chest and I can barely summon enough puff to blow out a match ( well that is a bit of an exaggeration, but my breathing definitely feels very restricted ). What I have feels like a normal cold, without the stuffy nose and streaming snot. However, my symptoms are a very long way from those associated with something like a Zombie Apocalypse.

It could be nothing, but I am being overly cautious and self isolating - more for the benefit of others than myself.

Obviously the rapid spread of the virus is a concern along with the fatal impact that it can have on people who aren't at full strength or more susceptible to it. Anything that can take the life of even one person has to be taken seriously.

My biggest worry from all this is how poorly prepared every country was for it. When you take into account the potential threat of things like viral terrorism ( and our supposed readiness to handle such things ) the government's lackadaisical response to this outbreak is very worrying.

However, the share price in companies that are producing marigolds, cheap disposable plastic overalls and porta-cabins could rise substantially when the markets re-open. Things looked a lot different in the Hollywood movies like Outbreak, Dustin Hoffman had a proper HAZMAT suit in that one.

Today I have mostly been playing https://store.steampowered.com/app/6224 ... oard_Game/ which is the single person ( local co op ) version of Pandemic the tabletop game.

Playthrough of the board game can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytK1zDPPDhw

The best thing everyone can do is keep calm, be cautious and try to carry on as best as normal. A little gallows humour doesn't hurt either :)

Edit: For those that look for the best in any given situation - unfortunately my ability to type seems to be unaffected.

I wouldn't say every country was poorly prepared. A lot of Far Eastern countries seem to be handling it quite well. I think that they learned from the SARS and MERS outbreak how best to deal with these things. The West didn't.

Hope you feel better soon.

He talks about the strategy to build up 'herd' immunity that 'about 60 per cent is the sort of figure you need to get herd immunity'.....that's near enough 40 million people

It’s barking, I don’t claim to know more than a chief medical officer but what I do know is that we are better off not having the virus in the first place, the acceptance doesn’t need to be in place.

He doesn't appear to be interested in being tested either. It's like he genuinely thinks he's immune to it and can't catch it. Like him being the president means the virus will leave him alone.

Not one bit of solid advice or reassurance for the American citizens. Just a beauty parade of all the companies who are gonna earn a fortune.

And yet the yanks will vote him in again.

His point Jakub is that this virus is not going to go away much like flu and therefore if we stop most of the UK getting infected now then next winter we will have another bout; whereas if a sizeable number get it this year then there will be fewer cases and no epidemic next year.
He seems to know more about the immune response to this virus as immunity is short lived to most coronoviruses and the speculation is that we will be getting infections every year-although having had it once it is likely that repeated bouts should be less severe.
If it does hang around long term like flu then it will throw out mutations like flu and we will be at risk of pandemics of this coronovirus like we already have with flu
Don't get the analogy with antibiotic resistance

It’s barking, I don’t claim to know more than a chief medical officer but what I do know is that we are better off not having the virus in the first place, the acceptance doesn’t need to be in place.
That really really looks like, "I don’t claim to know more than a chief medical officer but I do know more than a chief medical officer."

What about the flu? It will have to up its game!
The experts have already said that Covid 19 and Flu are not disimilar. The difference is that Covid is new and doesn't yet have a vaccine. When it does, the infection rates will probably drop to similar levels to Flu.

The problem with Flu is that it tends to mutate from time to time, which means a slighty different vaccine every year. Whether or not Covid 19 will do the same, we just don't know yet. If it doesn't, then once everyone has had this new virus, they should then have antibodies to protect them against future attacks.

Remember, Flu killed between 20 and 50 million in 1918 /19. Covid 19 has a lot of catching up to do yet.

Antibiotics resistance is a major problem there don’t even administer routinely for certain types of infections now due to the bacteria changing, it ties in with the herd immunity idea in the opposite direction but in a positive way, maybe not the best analogy, 1s certainly bad the other potentially good. It’s the defence mechanism (immunity adapting).

Let's get one point clear. Antibiotics don't work on ANY virus,

He's on Channel 4 currently doing an impression of an unhinged egomaniac. I presume it's an impression. They have a proper scientist on to compare and contrast.

19 refers to the year.

When it emerged, the virus was known as a “novel” strain of the coronavirus family.

Scientists gave the strain an interim name of 2019-nCoV, accounting for the year of discovery, its status as a “novel” virus, and its family name (CoV).

The new designation, while different, represents the same information
