Laptop advice

Post by Vegas Claret » Fri Mar 13, 2020 8:55 pm

I know we have a few photographers on here so thought I would ask for some input ! My sister in law is after a laptop (ideally around 15") that she can do some photo editing on with the single most important thing being 100% rgb/adobe colour to ensure accuracy

Anyone able to throw any info my way it's appreciated !

To be honest go with most major brands and you wont go wrong.

HP, Lenovo, Dell. Then there are the smaller brands which are equally capable now. Most if not all will be compatible with that software. What you want to look at is the spec. And what she will use it for.

If she stores most stuff in the cloud or on external hard drives then you dont need tonnes of ram. I have a huwawei which is high spec but has relatively low storage. (Actually wish i got more storage on the device but with the size of files these days it soon fills up and most stuff is web based anyway now).

Main things will be good resolution screen
Decent RAM (at least 8gb)
Decent processor (I5 or above if intel)

Note a lot have different keyboard layouts. The actual keys will be in the same order but some are further apart or smaller and take some getting used to. My work HP one and personal Huwawei one are totally different and does take getting used to. Best one in that sense was my Lenovo Thinkpad in my previous job.

It's not the compatability with the software, it's the fact that most monitors are absolute cabbage when it comes to reproducing colours accurately - hence the 100%RGB /Adobe requirement as that's as close as you can really get as a consumer

Most recently used an Asus zenbook which was about 94% coverage and was a cracking laptop.

Think they're about a grand or so.

Most midrange laptops have rubbish screens unfortunately, loads only cover about 50-55%.

Is the accuracy purely for monitor viewing or for printing?

She wants to know the colours are accurate on screen - I've already explained that the image will look different on every screen but ya know........

I thought they were banned in America and / or unable to access most of the applications and services due to trumps ban on huwawei. May just be Mobile’s that though.

If it's that important then she'll need to buy something to calibrate it (and preferably recalibrate if lighting conditions change).

I use a Spyder express but that's a few years old now.

Yeah I told her that. The requirement for 100% rgb/Adobe is still there either way. I was hoping a few of you had said laptops but seemingly not. I'll keep looking :D cheers Aggi

Best look at reviews on notebookcheck since they measure colour coverage in each review.

It's not a simple case of only having colour coverage either unless your sister in law is going to calibrate herself with a colorimeter.

No good having coverage if your greens are blue and your reds are green.

In fact, you could argue accuracy is more important than coverage.

As mentioned already it is pretty damn rare to find a laptop with good accuracy and coverage but they do exist, especially if you look at the premium lines from the manufacturers as they tend to come with higher quality displays, some of which may be factory calibrated.

On notebookcheck you can filter and order reviews for both specs.

If she plans to calibrate herself which is definitely needed for best results (even with a factory calibrated display) the best value are chromapure colorimeters. The latest Spyder one isn't so bad but it's costly. You can pick up sales of the i1 display pro or colormunki display for around $150 now. They also just released a new studio version and you can buy kits designed exactly for photography from them together with the meters to try help with print matching.

Look towards a MacBook Pro, I moved to Mac about 10 years ago and they are superb colour renditions for photography, customer service is outstanding too. Not cheap, but performance is right up there, I'll never go back to windows.
