Luton v Burnley 1980

Post by Stan Tastic » Mon Mar 16, 2020 9:27 pm

Some good players in the team then, surprised they were struggling.

Then I noticed the goal difference was -27.

Four full-backs playing in our team that day. Tony Arins, Ian Brennan, Derek Scott & Paul Dixon.

A decent performance on a shocker of a pitch with great play from Malcolm Smith for our goal.

Paul Dixon wasn’t a full back

Did he not play at left-back in the home game against Swansea a few weeks earlier?

One appearance out of fifteen does not make Paul Dixon a left back ... I saw him play a lot for the Reserves too.Good player but too slow he went to Glentoran after being released.

Glad I watched that.
Luton has some good players - Stein, Hill etc all went on to win league cup with Luton.

My cousin is playing no 8 for Burnley - most footage I have ever seen of him I think !

He might well have done but not sure how you thought he was a full back.

I really rated Robertson when I watched him in the reserves but he couldn't quite manage the step up to the first team. He went to Exeter and then Doncaster before spending the rest of his career in Scotland.

He was at Rangers for a while I think but then spent most of his career at a various smaller clubs but played plenty of football.
He was from Scotland so got to go back home to play his football.
Great hair !

If he did play for Rangers it might have been for a boys club ? he came to Burnley as an apprentice and never played for Rangers as a senior professional or did he sign for them and not get in the side? I can"t remember to be honest .

It was a long time ago but I remember something about Rangers. I know he was a lifelong supporter of them. It might have been that he played against them or beat them at their ground.
He might have also spent some time there on the coaching team as I know he went down that route for a while at the end of his career.
Just done a Wikipedia check on his playing clubs and like you say he didn’t play for them.

Now that does ring a bell ... I vaguely remember reading something along those lines maybe when he played for Dumbarton

Tvc15, does Stuart still come down to Burnley to visit?. He married a Burnley girl and the last time I spoke to him was around 7/8 years ago in the Thornton Arms. He was one of the group of apprentices, who worked under me at the club (not football related), at that time. Many memories of the crack we had, while doing our work.
Re the Rangers link, reminded me of another in the group, Marshal Burke, who was playing for Celtic Boys Club, when he signed for Burnley. Marshal was also a big Rangers fan.

Hi
Stuart was good friends with Marshall Burke when they were apprentices. Marshall was lodging near me when he was at Burnley.
Stuart does come down every now and again to see family. If you want a bit more detail leave your contact details and I can message you.

TVC15, I would appreciate that. I don't mind Claret Tony passing you my e mail address. I'm still in touch with 2/3 of those apprentices. Thanks.

I only saw Joe Jakub in the early 90s as an aging left back.

He looks like Messi in his prime on that clip! :o

Was our last player to have played top flight for us when he returned to us in the 4th Division I think until OC got us up in 2009

Weird to see the keepers picking up the ball from back-passes.

anyone back yet?

Great footage. Anyone remember making the trip?
Got great memories of Luton, Micky Williams scoring in a 3-2 win under Waddle Tuesday night. Think it was my first away game without parents as a young lad.

From watching the clip Joe Jakub was the stand out memory. Must have seen him play for us in that period and then at Bury under Dobson. Think he went to play for AZ Alkmaar then to Chester City. He played for them against us in an FA Cup game then back to Burnley and was a big part in promotion season.
