Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
With sport and normal leisure pursuits largely gone or going, what are you going to do instead? I need something to distract from the carnage and protect my mental health.
I'm considered self teach piano basics course (having never played a musical instrument).
20 pull up challenge in 6 weeks (from a starting point of 3)
Do they still do Air fix models?
Open to ideas if anyone has got any - maybe something positive can come from these desperate times without sport/pubs/events...
Anybody else doing something new to fill the gaps?

As I work from home (online marketing), probably not all that much different to what I normally do, as my work won't really be impacted as more people will be online.
Although, there's been things I've wanted to do - such as learn every capital city in the world. You know... sad things like that.

Re: Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
I'm working from home but with very little to do at the minute.
I'm making sure I take the dog out for 2 x 30minute walks, keeping on top of the cleaning as my Mrs is still in work and going to the Gym for an hour (at least whilst its still open)
I have had a rough few months with stress so I need to keep myself busy and have a structure or it drives me crazy. I don't watch TV during the day anyway so Im just sat at my desk ticking over with bits of work and the odd look on here

Still work at the minute for me. But have a backlog of Polaroids to scan, 35mm film to home develop, scan etc. Painstaking but fun at the same time.

Looks like I'll be working from home soon as plans are being made. Save the petrol money - won't have to get up as early and put up lunches etc. I'll take the dog out a couple of times a day to break the boredom. Wife still at work as her work cannot be done from home. Got a decent size back garden for if the weather turns decent.

the Winter Sports.
Might powerwash the patio and drive first though.

Probably resume the self teach guitar lessons I abandoned about 6 months ago.
List some stuff for sale on ebay (not toilet rolls, hand sanitizer or nappies)

Re: Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
Clean the house top to bottom, relax, have some mid afternoon naps, take the dog on some long walks, catch up on all them films that are "must watch", but I've never bothered to watch.
I might even learn to play the xbox so can have a few games of fifa with the lad. Gaming is something I've never been interested in, so I've not a clue how to set up a game of fifa, never mind play it.
I've also got 2 half read books I dont seem to have the time to finish.
If I exhaust all the above to a point of boredom, I'll probably talk to the wife

Re: Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
The garden is going to get some serious attention. I've even started tarting up the grass verge in front of the house. The back patio is going to get a power washing and the car a good wash and wax. When the weather turns bandit I'm going to get my 2019/20 tax return done and then start to learn Spanish. One word a day and try to get some structure to my vocabulary. Some fitness work and some good, long walks. Might nip to the golf driving range if it's open.

Re: Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
I so called retired sometime ago but the company I left asked if I would work independently from home as a "consultant". Over time some people left the company and joined others, therefore other companies asked if I would help them in a similar way, so today I pick and chose which companies and what I want to work on, things that interest me and I don't work fulltime but do put sometime during the day as my working time, just a few hours normally. I am also asked to attend meeting occasionally and involves travel. Right now obviously I am not traveling but still working on a couple of things, yet some things I worked on for months have been destroyed by the oil price and the virus, so nearly all my work is having to be revised but not all, although it will need tweaking.
I do have a few jobs that need doing, putting pictures up that has been put off for months, well years actually, don't have a garden so that avenue is blocked, don't have a dog but do like to walk in the park so will probably also do more of that.

Yeah, we just got a digital piano for my daughters lessons but I’ve never even tried to learn an instrument before. I suspect it would drive me mad, but might be worth a go.

I tried to learn long ago when young, guitar, the instructor finally told my mother he couldn't take any money off her in good faith any longer, I think that was after months. I convinced my mother it was the 6 strings and said if I had the bass one with 4 strings it would be much easier, you can guess the outcome, poor mum.

I’ve just had to stay at home for a while following a bout of pneumonia. I transferred all of my old video tapes (vhs and camcorder tapes) onto my computer. That’s about 30 years worth! Something others might want to do.
However I don’t think I can watch another school nativity play again !!

I get the weathershield, Tribesmen, and then double it with water. Still does a sound job.
Shame that at that consistency it won’t go through my spray gun and I’m to tight to hire.
Hand job it is then.

Anyone wishing to learn to play the guitar could do a lot worse than buying these .... Normally retailing for a fiver each these will take you from absolute beginner to super star! ... I like the ideas of piano and guitar. Learning, either French or Spanish may be on my "retirement" activities list.
Re the world's capital cities - being able to name them is one thing, setting out to see how many I can visit would be a big retirement challenge. (Still some missing from European capitals on my list - hope I can tick the missing ones off while following the Clarets on a European tour, or two).

Re: Planning anything constructive with your extra time?
Paul, I worked in the energy industry my whole working life and have thoroughly enjoyed in, varied and interesting, hubby works in the same line of work but does different things. We got to live in numerous countries and always enjoyed the cultural aspect of it as well as the work plus the travel. I started working in the BD area around 15 years ago and developing strategies and methods to enhance work, I have worked for oil companies around 40% of the time and contractors around 60%. The last five years has been all around strategy and future planning as a retiree, the last two years have been around trends and developing strategical plans for all the regions in the world where the companies work, part of that over the last year has been focused on 2 aspects, energy transition so you could call it alternative, the why and where, what is working well and what is, limitations to all of them. Secondly "big data", digitalization, AI/AR, robotics. Actually learning far more than I ever wanted to lol plus have more questions than answers on that side right now.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2020 11:20 amHi Kate, I retire the end of the month (for 2nd time). I work on what I want to work on and for whom I want to work for so can manage my hours and work at my pace, they pay me a lot more than when I used to work for these companies and wish I had done it earlier

Is anybody else shopping more at their local stores?
The supermarkets will survive, but just spending a bit more at the local farm shops, greengrocers et al, could help them out a lot.
Hopefully, they'll be able to remain open as they are selling the necessitates. The local greengrocers I've just come back from even had toilet roll!
