Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
Not all that clear there boris.
Just had the call that my work is now shut.
Bit surprised yet missus works for a larger engineering firm and is still expected to go in in the morning.
Could do with confirming if or not "non essential " work places should close for the initial 3 weeks.
How did others interpret it please?

Is the health of non-essential factory workers not that important? Weird statement I agree.alboclaret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 9:22 pmNot all that clear there boris.

Fair play to Boris, he's certainly lit up Twitter tonight. Top class entertainment from the nations favourite Jester
On a serious note good luck those in construction and other jobs deemed as self employed. I hope the govt sorts out that situation sharpish as clear direction supported by employers and funded by the govt will be key to making this lockdown of sorts work as it needs to

Self employed workers need to know whether they'll be protected financially if they heed these instructions,if there's no clarification then you can hardly blame them if they feel the need to carry on working,as ever the devil's in the detail.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 9:31 pmFair play to Boris, he's certainly lit up Twitter tonight. How do you define non-essential? We make steel lockers, a huge customer of ours is the Nhs, who unsurprisingly, are ordering a lot of lockers right now. The supply chain for essential services, including things that might not be obviously essential but without which, the service can’t function, has to carry on.

Agree and people being put under pressure by bosses to come in or will be sacked and not employed when things are back to normal.
Support for all self employed and forced shut down of certain work places like building sites and factories needs to happen quick

Not a time for ambiguity.
Not clear enough, nowhere near...
Why not "if you are not a key worker, stay at home" That wasn't what was said. And who decides what is essential? Is there a list?

Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
It was basically "go to work" if you are working. So I guess, if your business is open, you keep going until told otherwise?
There will be more measures in place soon I reckon.
What a fascinating time to be alive.

One thing that wasn't clear to me was about Sandwich shops/Takeaways etc ...
I know that Subway, Greggs and McDonalds have taken the decision to shut, but what about smaller chains and owner run places ? Also the pubs etc that have been offering collection services ... you could interpret the phrase, " Food retailers " to include these, or perhaps not ...

You shouldn't be surprised; there's been a pattern.
Call me cynical but every bit of "advice" rather than an actual directive has just been an exercise in the herd immunity originally planned.

It would seem they give us the soft version one day then the day after enforce it hard so looking at what bumble Boris said tonight (which was a tad vague to say the least), I'm expecting letters and passes needed to leave the house by Friday
Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
I was wondering about local takeaways too. They sell food which is essential, but they aren't essential themselves.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 10:03 pmOne thing that wasn't clear to me was about Sandwich shops/Takeaways etc ...

Not these I shouldn't think although the Chancellor's speech last week was peppered with "We will get through this", about six or seven times, I think. Lots of "unprecedented"s too.
Perhaps he was hiding behind a lectern..

Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
Back to the OP, I'd forgotten what a **** job clearing up after a day's decorating is. Lots more to come, sadly.
Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
I know it's a serious situation and I am being flippant, but.. as long as 80% of my wage is paid and as long as my employer can apply for an interest free loan so I have a job to go back to, bring it on ! I haven't had longer than a week off for 10 years.

Slightly worrying that during a national emergency we're left to attempt to interpret a pre-prepared speech.

Not really, I think we all know what he said and meant.
Are the large unessential businesses in the area doing their bit by shutting down? Of course not.
Let's stop this virus by not gathering in parks but gathering 100's of people in work places.

Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
Thought it was pretty clear, a bit like the instructions that said to avoid close contact- just seems that a part of the population decides it doesn’t effect them. So now we all need to suffer.
If your work is open and you can’t work from home then you need to go in. Feels like there a lot of people feeling entitled to going home, watching box sets and getting paid.

I work for a furniture manufacturer. Fairly non-essential.1fatclaret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 9:43 pmHow do you define non-essential? There won't be many doing that for statutory sick pay.Burnleyareback2 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 10:51 pm

Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
His speech was written by some very clever people. By not saying “only key workers are to go to work” he has left it in the hands of business owners to make the call.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 10:45 pmNot really, I think we all know what he said and meant.

What I heard was “go to work if the work you do can’t be done at home”. The use of “absolutely necessary” has added the confusion. Clarification required.... but they knew this when they wrote it.
If he meant only key workers go to work for the next three weeks, he would’ve said that....but he didn’t.

People posting this shite all over the internet hasn’t really helped. At NO time did anyone use the term “key worker” whilst describing the new measures.

Trouble is, people are seeing that message when it really isn’t there. They want three weeks dossing at home on 80% money with no chance to spend it. Like saving up! They LOVE it.

I don't know where you have got that from, because no one in this area is going to get 80% of their wages by being off due to this ^national emergency".

I'm talking about the vast numbers of people who work in factories.
Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
Where had 3 weeks come from. At least 5 months
Re: Staying at home for 3 weeks...
To be fair I did say I was being flippant. I'm fully aware that this country is in the worst economical situation since the end of world war two. It took 50 years to pay that off. Gallows humour ?
