Keeping fit
What are people doing to keep themselves fit in these sad times.? At the moment I'm walking 4/5 miles every day in the open countryside ( very quiet with hardly a soul about) or else doing a few miles cycling before the lockdown goes into full swing.. I hate sitting in the house,so god knows what I will do when we are in full lockdown apart from drive the Missus crazy.

Started on the garden yesterday. Couple of hours a day for a fortnight should see it reyt.
I had been in training for a May half marathon but picked up a hip injury a week ago. Race cancelled so I’m allowing it to heal proper.

Endorphins are a great way to make you feel better, and they are free!
Doing exercise everyday will release them into your system and give you a lift.

I have seen some very unfit people running for the first time last night.
I reckon this could backfire.
We might have more heart attacks on our hands than covid 19 victims.

We're both doing the "Davina" work outs, just one of them but a different one every morning. A lot harder than I thought. The Wife's two years older than me (I'm 66) and I struggle to keep up with her.

There's loads of really good home workouts on line. but if you are new to them take it easy at first. They can be very enjoyable especially when you start seeing improvement.

Before, I used to do an intense 25min workout in the morning then a 15min walk in the afternoon.
Now, I find I'm doing an intense 25min workout first thing, 40min online pe workout with my youngest mid morning, football/cricket for 30mins a lunch, 15mins at break then a 40-60min walk in the afternoon.
Add work into that and I'm exhausted. But the weight is coming off quicker than before.

Instead of insulting others wrongly some people should listen to what the PM said .
You can leave your house to exercise once a day.
That should be clear to anyone over the age of two I would say

Re: Keeping fit
To the question of where someone lives, there was clear guidance given on the main TV news yesterday by a top Government official that if necessary it was ok to travel a distance from your home. When asked if that included 30 mins drive away he said clearly that would be acceptable.
There was no limit put on the time of exercise and the advice was that if you were well away from people you should not worry about how long your walk or exercise takes.
These are the facts and anyone trying to lay their own law down to you should be told to go and find out more

I can assure you that I am taking this self isolation very seriously, we both keep our distance when we come across others.
No need to start name calling. I walk with my wife and we see very few people as the walks we do are not well knownbox_of_frogs wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 8:47 pmWhat’s the difference between someone doing a 5 mile run, and someone doing a 5 mile walk?

I will try to put it in very simple terms for some of the selfish folks on here. STAY INDOORS. ONLY GO OUT IF ITS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Going on a 2 hours hike is not a necessity. You are being selfish and ignorant. IM not being rude its stating the truth. Stay indoors and do some exercise. Don't put others at risk with your selfish ways. When this is all over then go and hike for as long as you like. IN the meantime PLEASE show some empathy for others. This is the trouble with this country. People will always try and exploit situations. Its not clever. My wife is a Doctor and if I could tell you what she is seeing on a daily basis and what lies ahead you would stay in doors for the next few weeks to try and help the situation. You are making it worse. the dimwits of the society will see you on your 2 hour hike and the brain dead will follow your lead by doing other stupid things.

Re: Keeping fit
I sort of share the same opinion, I’m somebody that loves being outdoors but haven’t left the village this week and have literally run two miles and back on the country lane behind my house once a day with the dog! I’d love to do that in a morning as well but I’m following the rules. I’d love to run for two hours but then if I’m running 2 hours, why not 3 hours the next day etc
Re: Keeping fit

Went for a two mile walk late afternoon yesterday - we live on the very edge of a small town in North Yorks. Encountered only one person - a lady with her slabbering dog (walking in the opposite direction), who informed us, in no uncertain terms, that she always walked at this time of day & could we ensure that we didn’t endanger her in future!!! May wear a Mankini on this afternoon’s jaunt.

Usual for me. Cycle 20 mile round trip to work and then an hour or so cycling in the evening.
If you want a monthly challenge plus a nice medal then have a look at the link below. You can choose either walking, running or cycling for as many miles as you can manage. It’s good incentive to get out.

I went for a jog yesterday and I don't know if I'm being paranoid but it felt like people were really exaggerating their movement to let me past when the path was a bit narrow, even to the point of stepping onto the grass when it clearly wasn't necessary

People are parking up in Barley and walking up Pendle. This should be stopped immediately. Tourist spots should be closed and people should go out walking from where they live and not invading other peoples areas.
Crazy actions of a few idiots will spoil it for many. Emergency services have been out because of people getting lost over Pendle. Come on Who the fuk could get lost anywhere in Lancashire, bloody ridiculous

Re: Keeping fit
That's a very selfish attitude. It may be that there are sound reasons why people shouldn't go to the countryside to have a walk, but "I've got a square mile of countryside and I will keep it all to myself, you 200 people can walk up and down your street" isn't a sound reason.Top Claret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 26, 2020 12:33 pmPeople are parking up in Barley and walking up Pendle. Trying to limit the geographic spread of the virus is a good thing I'd say. If those 200 people are walking up and down their street then it should only spread in that cluster. If those 200 people are all driving to different places then you stand the risk of spreading it further afield into new groups.dsr wrote: ↑Thu Mar 26, 2020 10:31 pmThat's a very selfish attitude. It's not as if anyone is down to their "last toilet roll". I live in one of the more densely populated areas of London and I was still able to go for a walk without bumping into people. I'd have preferred to head out to the countryside but given it's only been about a week I don't think anyone can be that desperate.

That argument has sense to it. It's Top claret's attitude of "don't invade my hill" that I didn't like.aggi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 12:13 amTrying to limit the geographic spread of the virus is a good thing I'd say. the issue you have is that selfish people don’t know they’re being selfish. They just assume they’re nice people who care about their own happiness more than anything else. Without a shadow of doubt these uneducated morons are the probably the same morons who were stock piling all items at the supermarket. The NHS workers or old age pensioners would have never crossed their little minds.Top Claret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 7:49 amThe point I was trying to make is that people should exercise from their own house, and not jump in their cars and drive to their favourite spots to do their exercise.

Re: Keeping fit
As a keen runner, I've followed this part of the guidance very carefully. Anyone with half a brain knows now that one form of outside exercise a day is allowed as long as other rules are followed. That's been quite clear for 4 days now, so anyone ranting about people going out for exercise is either fishing or a complete moron. After that it's not quite as clear, but overall the message from people in the government, police forces, etc is pretty standard.
Non essential transport is not allowed. So driving to a beauty spot for exercise, whether a walk, run or cycle is not allowed. It doesn't matter whether it's a mile, 5 miles or 50 miles. There may be a grey area if it literally isn't possible to exercise where you live, but that rarely applies.
There's no limit on how far or how long your exercise is. People should use their common sense though. Big hills and fells add more risk so are seen as a no-no because of the impact on emergency services such as mountain rescue. This includes Pendle, Boulsworth, etc. Similarly if you're a long distance runner, going out on a 20 mile run and moving away as far as 10 miles from your house is also not sensible. If you pick up an injury half way you may again need to rely on emergency services.
I've been doing daily 6 mile runs and haven't been getting more than 2 miles from home. I've aimed for country roads that are quieter and avoided the canal towpath which doesn't allow much space to pass and is very busy.

A couple of hours a day for 12 weeks should see it like Kew Gardens.
