Clap for Our Carers
An unfortunate title - as if our health workers haven't enough problems
Apparently, there's a nationwide round of applause, Spain/Italy - style scheduled for 8pm tonight.
Myself, I'd prefer an immediate decent pay rise for every single one of them but I guess, in the meantime, this will have to do.
Is the applause thing a lovely gesture or a bit unnecessary, a bit of a cringefest ?

I’m loathe to agree with you Eddie but you’ve summed it up pretty well . There’s never any doubt any time of year the gratitude the country has for the NHS though feels hideously cringeworthy . Personally I’d be happy to pay another 3% NI and give them a decent pay rise

Some proper PPE would probably be more helpful to start with.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
No doubt there will be plenty of people videoing themselves doing their round of applause and right after they'll be uploading it to BookFace. Which reminds me, last night I took some food to the old couple across the road and forgot to videoing myself handing it to them.
On a serious note: Our NHS staff need PPE and they need it now, rather than applause. People would be better off doing a bit of screaming and shouting about the lack of PPE for our NHS staff and social carers.

I wonder if the clapping applies to those of us that care for relatives 24/7 and for that we get paid the vast sum of £65 a week

This isn't my kind of thing and I find it all a bit cringe and Sue Barkerish but if its gonna happen then filming it and adding it to social media would be the obvious thing to do and one pf the plus points.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Thu Mar 26, 2020 8:41 amNo doubt there will be plenty of people videoing themselves doing their round of applause and right after they'll be uploading it to BookFace. The videos of the community spirit in Italy is heartwarming (again not my kind of thing) and has really lifted and engaged with a lot of people around the world and within the communities themselves.
Not sure how old you are but I find it a bit strange and sort of out of touch how older people immediately associate the filming and uploading of anything as a kind of self centred look at me attitude. Filming and sharing stuff is just part of everyday life for the younger generation and for the majority it holds no hidden agenda

I wouldn't wish a sexually transmitted infection on anyone, never mind carers.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
I've just got in from a 27 hour shift, any recognition however small is greatly received. I just hope the graft being put in by many isnt taken for granted by not only fellow members of the public but also those in charge of the purse strings right at the very top in the future when hopefully things are brought back under control !!
Re: Clap for Our Carers
There’s a lot of people still working to keep the country going under trying conditions so if anything’s going to happen it shouldn’t just be about care workers.

I'm 41, and don't consider myself to be old, but I suppose it's subjective. Mind you, I don't do social media for none-work related stuff as I find it boring, and like you said, self-centred. And in any case, I wasn't knocking the gesture or the good will behind it. However, you chose to miss my main point. I said it would be better if people were up in arms about the lack of PPE for our NHS staff and social carers like those who work in care homes and domicile carers too.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Thu Mar 26, 2020 9:27 amNot sure how old you are but I find it a bit strange and sort of out of touch how older people immediately associate the filming and uploading of anything as a kind of self centred look at me attitude. Cringe fest.
Now that the penny has finally dropped as to how important they are give them a pay rise instead when all this is under control.

You had a dig about people videoing stuff implying they are self centred and look at me which is just a p*ss poor generalisation which probably comes from a lack of understanding cos you don't use it yourself and see it as boring

And one of the reasons I say that is that I know that at least one authority is incentivising teachers to go to work to teach the children of key workers by a very significant increase in their hourly rate - with all due respect to teachers why do they need to be incentivised to go in ? They are being categorised as a key worker and should be made to go in under the terms of their contract.
Compare that to nurses, police already under massive pressure, long working hours etc and many now being asked to work extra hours and put their lives even more at risk trying to protect / care for the rest of society.
Increase income tax rates over say £35k to pay for it - even if it’s a temporary increase for a year. Would anybody object to that ?
As for the clapping - yep a bit out of the comfort zone of the English culture....but so was the Mexican Wave and look how that caught on ?!!! In seriousness if it increases the awareness of the vital role they are playing in any way then it’s a good thing.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
Don't forget that a lot more people in such as Italy and Spain live in apartment blocks so that it has turned into a bit of a community event every night for them. If I went outside at 8pm I am pretty sure nobody would hear me! Folks across Europe (apart from maybe those of Teutonic breeding) also go round kissing one another all the time -- or at least they did. I have been saying for weeks that this could be a key reason for the rapid spread of the virus among the Latinos? Any road, I think I'll settle for giving any nurses and medical staff a friendly nod if I see them during my very limited movements. Also give way to ambulances when safe to do so.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
When all this is over I think everyone will be just happy to have a job and pay the bills.
I Don't understand why people should be wanting to throw money at carers or any other public sector worker
Boris Johnsons recent budget will be now going through the shredder a new one full of severe austerity will be in the making.
We are in for a recession like we have never seen before if we can't crack this and fast

Re: Clap for Our Carers
I’d sooner give them a round of applause than a pay rise.
No problem with the pay rise per se, but this is gonna set us back eons, paying people extra money at this time for going to work and doing their job would be spectacularly irresponsible when any money could be spent on vaccine research.
Let’s get to the other side first, before we think about rewarding those who will undoubtedly deserve it.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
Not for me thanks, organised cringiness is even cringier than normal cringiness.
I’ll show my support for the NHS staff by being polite and respectful to them whenever I encounter them, which I naturally am anyway, and I would expect the same in return. They are doing their jobs, they now find themselves in the middle of a crisis and I’m sure everyone appreciates the harder work that they will be putting in as a result. I don’t feel the need to participate in some mass-organised back-slapping to show that appreciation.
There are literally millions of people who will have to make sacrifices of many kinds during the coming months. I’m just as concerned about the people who’s livelihoods are at stake than people carrying out their secure jobs under very trying circumstances.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
Twitter's full of Labour Momentum types,i wouldn't pay much attention to the sad sacks, they'll be crying even more when Keir Starmer becomes Labour leader,if people want to participate in this event that's their choice, and who they voted for in December should be irrelevant, equally the voices that think this is a cringe fest are valid also.
It's fine showing your appreciation to the front-line staff, but unless they're provided with the right equipment, they're 'lambs to the slaughter' as one NHS worker stated a couple of days ago,the comparison is sending soldiers into battle without weapons,if this public show of support shakes the politicians into action, and the PPE supplies get to the hospitals quicker then great.

Plenty out applauding, in our village.
It’s not my cup of tea usually, but a little gratitude alongside a dose of community spirit at a time like this, is certainly no bad thing.

Re: Clap for Our Carers
Someone mentioned community spirit on this thread and we’ve got a WhatsApp group set up here so those in need of some help, maybe a bit of shopping, can get it.
We are neighbours but don’t really know each other - that’s life today - but brilliant to see people coming together (not literally) to help. Some of those neighbours were out applauding tonight, a lot were in the area. Not my cup of tea but I don’t see anything wrong with it at all.
Dame Vera celebrated her 103rd birthday last week. It feels like we need more like her and the war time spirit than the selfish world we live in today.

I’ve been knocking on an elderly gentlemen’s door on the road near me, he didn’t answer so I was a little concerned, I saw him sat out back and asked if there was anything he needed at all as I’d sort it, he said I don’t like to ask. He’s got my Mrs number and we both worry but it’s hard when you’re supposed to stay away. Decided we are going to do him a shop and just drop it off for him, there will surely be something he needs

Great effort in my village, could hear people all over the place.
Excellent way of thanking and appreciating the work being done. Added benefit of getting people out of the house and together at a safe distance. I am sure there are a lot of people out there feeling isolated.
Hopefully it will happen again next week.
