Rovers players
Rovers players
Just been reading that their players refused to defer some pay for March to ensure the club could pay non-playing staff and suppliers. A few were unhappy about the notice they were given to agree to the scheme and as such all refused to particpate although talks are continuing regarding them deferring some pay for April.
I wonder how many players at other clubs are clinging onto their contract terms?

I think the selfish and greedy will fade into obscurity in all this, those who were kind and community focused will become heroes.

There are reports that Barca players aren't all supporting the idea of a wage cut.
FC Sion sacked 9 players that refused to take a cut.

Paul Weller didn't seem to last long here after refusing a wage cut after the ITV digital collapse.

Re: Rovers players
Players are being hit with a lot of pseudo moral coercion/emotional blackmail at the moment with Football authorities, clubs, media and general public effectively demanding that they carry the risk and responsibility for all of them yet they have repeatedly had their own worries ignored by all of them for years.
I have posted about this a number of times in the last few weeks on the Magic Money Tree thread and it is only going to get worse - if the game and clubs managed themselves more sensibly they would not be facing this dramatized "financial Armageddon" we keep posting about. Yes they have high wages, (they are the ones that are the reason for the revenues) but clubs are over extending themselves in the wages they pay and the authorities have done little to prevent that in their regulations. As we know from the eternally regularly postings on this board fans always want their club to push the boat out well now it has come in. Strong well managed clubs will find a way of sharing the risk and the burden, and not hospital pass it to someone else.

Re: Rovers players
I've read books by people like Clarke Carlisle and the Secret Footballer where they talk about footballer finances, especially when it comes to the majority. The common conception is they're loaded, but they live their lives completely differently to the man on the street. They have huge rents and mortgages and live for the moment. It's easy to judge, but I think they both allude to the lack of financial maturity from players who have lived in a bubble from being teenagers. Given time they easily take a pay cut, but in the immediate future many will have bills that need to be paid. The vast majority don't save for a rainy day.

Venkys can afford to carry on paying wages, so why should they take a cut?

I thought (and maybe wrong) that large numbers were self employed due t image rights and other bits and pieces. Often receiving income through a different vehicle eg Ltd co. Bit like a contractor would do on a building site

Re: Rovers players
My point is - most businesses can’t afford to pay staff, but Venkys can.
Non-playing staff and suppliers should still be getting paid and the players shouldn’t be brought into it.

Most businesses can't afford to pay staff, this coronavirus will send many to the wall.
We are all in it together and no doubt Rovers players are extremely well paid, they should do the decent thing and offer to take a pay cut.
Championship clubs don't get huge sums of sponcership money like the Premier league, they will be really suffering. Leeds did it so why can't Rovers.
This could be the straw that broke the camels back for the Venkys and make them pull the plug, if they do I shall have no sympathy for the players

This appraisal of the current status of situation in the English game reveals some disquiet in the Championship around clubs taking advantage of the suspension for their own ends given their financial over reach up to this point
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52063085
It effectively points the collective finger at the speculative spending of Leeds and Birmingham
It also shows that the league members are no closer to the collective reset that has been talked up in the media in the last couple of weeks
Re: Rovers players
I get that, but maybe Rovers as a business entity can't and require help from staff to ease the burden, setting aside the wealth of the Venkys - I wonder if they will be paying their staff in their other businesses?claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 2:19 pmMy point is - most businesses can’t afford to pay staff, but Venkys can.

It should be upto the individual clubs to negotiate a pay cut, not a deferral with their players.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 2:39 pmPosted this on the Magic Money Tree thread earlier

A pay cut does not get paid back unlike a defferal what is passed onto the next season and then interferes with the fair play rules

Re: Rovers players
a pay deferral would not pass onto next season's FFP - it would affect cash flow yes, but assumes cash is coming in which it is not at the momentTop Claret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 3:00 pmIt should be upto the individual clubs to negotiate a pay cut, not a deferral with their players.

also as I have previously posted a pay cut/deferral is a breach of contract unless the player agrees - we do not know the personal circumstances of the players though we do know that there is a great deal of coercion going on in this area - if it was the finance industry you can see a huge payout coming down the line in the vein of PPI to players pushed into doing this.
now is the time to talk about the future financial structure of the game while minds are focused in collective pain

Surely there is a force majeure clause in their contracts. The virus makes contracts null and void for the duration.

Not usually but that assumes they are on employment contracts, in which case furlough should be possible.
I bet Sky has a FM contract with the PL and I bet clever lawyers are poring over it assessing their options.

Think it more likely they have their money controlled by accountants who say no. Financial accountants will be investing l.r.c or they would if I were their age and earning on that level

They could always get paid in full and then donate some to a fund for the non playing staff.

Then a really good shock might be what they need now, while they stil have some playing career in front of them. Sooner or later their playing income is going to stop, and if they're sailing full steam ahead over the falls when that happens, they're properly in Dicky's meadow.ChorltonCharlie wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 11:15 amI've read books by people like Clarke Carlisle and the Secret Footballer where they talk about footballer finances, especially when it comes to the majority.
