Burnley Quiz - Saturday 28th March @ 8:30pm - "The 2008/09 Season"

It's quiz time folks!

I've put together a short quiz for our entertainment. The topic is "The 2008/09 Season" so get revising!

It was a fantastic year to be a Burnley fan as we enjoyed a very memorable League Cup run and ended the season triumphantly by securing our first ever promotion to the Premier League at Wembley.

Please join me at 8:30pm (UK time) when i'll start posting the questions. I'll post them one round of five at a time. I'm currently up to 20 questions but I think I'll find another 10 or so extra before we start so prepare for ~30 questions in rounds of 5.

Some questions will be easy, others will be more testing but hopefully they'll spark happy memories of what was a great season for Burnley Football Club.

It's just a bit of fun and distraction for a few minutes and as a "prize" I will draw a picture of any Burnley player chosen by the person who gets the most right answers. :)

Hope to see you later!

Sorry I can’t join you live but the family are all doing an online pub quiz tonight.
I’ll have the pleasure of doing it at leisure but not at Leisures.

Ok - I've finished writing the quiz and there are 40 questions!

I'll post them quickly, in rounds of five questions, at five minute intervals.

That will be quite a pace but it'll mean we'll get through them quickly. There's a range of difficulty in each of the rounds with the first questions being easier than last questions so should be something for everybody.

Hope to see as many of you as possible at 8:30pm tonight! :D

Once the quiz is finished I'll edit the opening post to include all the questions.

That way anyone who can't play along "live" will be able to read the questions without having to scroll through the answers.

Round 1 – Pre-Season

1. The Clarets started the season managed by enigmatic Scottish/Irish teetotaler Owen Coyle. It would be his only full season in charge of Burnley. What is his full name?
[1 point]

2. Goalkeeper Diego Penny was signed pre-season. He had some brilliant online clips of him doing a passable impression of Lev Yashin between the sticks whilst playing for his country. It looked like we’d unearthed a gem… But anyway – Which country was he performing heroics for?
[1 point]

3. Burnley won 5-0 away at Glentoran pre-season. The Glens fielded a team who were largely second string as they were set to play a EUFA qualifying round later in the week. Who scored Burnley’s fifth and final goal?
[1 point]

4. Burnley’s star signings in the summer were Martin Paterson and Chris Eagles, signed from Scunthorpe and Manchester United respectively. We also signed two players that summer who happened to played for teams in the same city. Who were the players and which teams did we sign them from?
Please answer like this:
Player 1 – Team 1
Player 2 – Team 2
[4 points]

5. The Clarets fielded two Latvian triallists in pre-season. One against St. Johnstone and one against Glentoran. Can you name them?
[2 points]

1 Owen Columba Coyle
2 Peru
3 Coyle
4 Kalvenes (Dundee United) & McDonald ( Dundee).

Don’t know the names of the two Latvians but the first one played at Partick Thistle. He was poor. Think the one at Glentoran might have been Slovojovs.

All correct!

TBH I'd be surprised if anyone got the two players without having to look them up. One of them stuck in my head but not the other.

Round 2 – The Difficult Opening Months

Whatever else happened on that pre-season will remain open to conjecture but when the season started Burnley raced out of the blocks with a bang – the kind of bang one might get on the head after one two many bottles of Buckfast washed down with lashings of Irn Brew. After four games we were second bottom having scored one goal and conceded seven. We had also endured two dreadful consecutive 0-0 draws. Things did not look good. However, the signing on a free of Steve Thompson from Cardiff and the shifting Graham Alexander to a holding midfield role transformed our shape and style. We began to look a little bit organized and there were glimpses of the free-flowing football that would became our hallmark later in the season.
The League Cup provided the sole comfort for Clarets in those opening weeks. Our league form may have been rotten but we looked like the kind of side who might be able to turn on the style on the odd occasion.
Let’s take a look at those tricky opening months of the season:

1. Remco Van der Schaaf made his infamous single appearance for the Clarets in a diabolically inept performance on the opening day of the season away at Sheffield Wednesday. We were 3-1 down after 17 minutes.
Van der Schaaf was hoiked after 59 minutes, never to be seen again, in spite of his hefty wages.
From which club had we signed the useless Dutchman?
[1 point]

2. We beat two north-west teams in rounds 1 and 2 of the League Cup. Name the two teams.
[2 points]

3. Our early cruddiness came to a head in a dire 0-0 draw against Plymouth on 30th August. We were reduced to ten men for the final few minutes after a player was sent off for foul and abusive language.
Of the man sent off, Owen Coyle said, ‘If it is an act of petulance he will be punished for that, we will not stand for that. He is a quality player but now he will be missing a few games.’
To whom was he referring?
[1 point]

4. Our league form turned a corner after an away win at Notts Forrest. Who scored a brace that day to secure a 2-1 away win?
[1 point]

5. The 3-0 drubbing away at Ipswich on 16th August gave Clarets fans a foreboding sense that it would be a long and arduous season. Happily, it proved to be the heaviest league defeat all season. Little did we suspect what was round the corner…
Ipswich that day fielded two attackers with Burnley connections – one former Claret, one future Claret. Can you name them both?
[2 points]

Round 3 – Clarets Hit Their Stride!

We lost only once in September and October. Suddenly things started to click. We really hit our stride. Graham Alexander brought on-field organization sitting ahead of the defence and on the wings Blake and Eagles could tear almost any team apart on their day.
We still had weaknesses at the back but when we hit fifth gear we were a force to be reckoned with. Chris McCann and Wade Elliot were effectively played as “inside forwards” and drove relentlessly at and behind defences.
At the pinnacle were Martin Paterson, who hassled all day long, and Thompson, who held the ball and brought our countless runners into play.
It actually started to come together and when it did, it was a thing of beauty.

1. We beat Premier League Fulham in the third round of the League Cup. The match looked to be heading into extra time when Burnley sealed the win with an 88th minute goal.
Who was the substitute who rounded the goalkeeper to score his first ever Burnley goal that day?
[1 point]

2. As our away game at Coventry seemed to be petering out to a draw, Coyle brought on substitutes Chris Eagles and Robbie Blake. The game was transformed as the substitutes scored a goal apiece to win it for Burnley.
What immortal slogan did Robbie Blake’s celebratory red Y-Fronts proclaim when he hit home his 88th minute goal?
[1 point]

3. Our 3-1 win against rivals Preston on 27th September was sweet revenge for the previous season when they’d won at the Turf after some shocking refereeing decisions went in their favour. No such luck for them this time round!
The game will long be remembered for Joey Gudjonsson’s dipping thunderbolt which levelled the game at 1-1.
Who was Preston’s manager on this particular day?
[1 point]

4. In November, we won 2-1 away at Queens Park Rangers. Which “jewell” of a player scored our winning goal that day, his last for Burnley?
[1 point]

5. Our sole defeat in 9 games in September and October came away at Reading. Reading, replete with their hulking central defender Andre Bikey, were flying high and had a 100% home record when they beat us 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium.
We would return there later in the season for a much more memorable performance but who were the two Irish international forwards on the scoresheet in October for Reading?
[2 points]

Round 4 – Going Great Guns in the League, “Capital Punishment” in the Cup!

The months leading up to Christmas were a fantastic time to be a Burnley supporter. We were certain play-off contenders and our League Cup run simply got better and better.
Our style of play was at times breathtaking to watch and on our day it felt like we could beat anybody.
There was a confidence and cockiness about Turf Moor in those days. When Coyle said we’d take the game to the opposition, no matter who they were, we believed him. There was belief everywhere.

1. Burnley beat Arsenal 2-0 in the league cup quarter on 2nd December 2008. The same player scored both our goals. Which Burnley player put the ball in the Arsenal net?
[1 point]

2. Arsenal fielded a very young and inexperienced side that day. This was something which my Preston-supporting friends often reminded me of, as if it lessened our achievement.
But there was a lot of talented players on show. It’s worth remembering that they had thumped Sheffield United’s first team 6-0 in the previous round.
The Arsenal side that day included lucas Fabianski, Keiran Gibbs, Justin Hoyte, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Niclas Bendtner and Carlos Vela.
They also fielded a midfielder who we signed on loan later in the same season – can you name him?
[1 point]

3. We beat Sheffield United away from home on 6th December 2008 courtesy of goals from Paterson, Alexander and Eagles.
It was a long time since we had won at Bramall Lane. In fact, it was our first win there since the last time we were promoted to the top flight. What was the year (not season) when we had last won at Bramhall Lane prior to 2008?

4. Alexander’s goal in that away at Sheffield United was from the penalty spot. We were adept at winning penalties this season and Grezza converted every single one without fail.
How many penalties did he score in the league this season for Burnley?

5. We travelled to Premier League leaders Chelsea in the fourth round of the League Cup. The game was level at 1-1 after 90 minutes following a second half fight back from Burnley. We then endured 30 minutes of backs to the wall desperation during extra time which included a disallowed Lampard goal, a couple of missed sitters from Chelsea and going down to 10 men when Steven Caldwell was sent off.
The resulting penalty shoot-out went to sudden death.
We probably all remember that Brian Jensen was our penalty-saving hero on that nail-biting night but which six players took the Burnley penalties?

In SHOCK news, CT has answered some questions incorrectly!

McDonald - Correct
Randall - Correct
1973 - Correct

Elliott, Duff, McDonald, Alexander & Eagles - All correct

Thirteen [penalties] - wrong
McCann - wrong

Two correct answers out there if anybody can get them!

13 was just a guess - will be higher than that. Just gone through the games in my head and could be about 17.

Was it Robbie or Mahon who took the other pen?

No improvement on CT's score unfortunately.

Kev Mac - Correct

1973 - Correct

Elliott, Alexander - Correct

Other answers wrong I'm afraid

Penalties - It's lower than that. Much lower.

I'll give the correct answers at the end, just in case anyone at home wants to try and guess for themselves.

Ohhhh, you're just one off with the number of penalties. And so is MrTopTier which rather gives away the answer ... :)

Mahon - Correct!

That's the sixth and final of our penalty takers all correct now.

I’d got Grezza’s total pens for us not for that season. I think it was 8 in 2008/09. Plus one in the play offs.

Round 5 – The Traditional Post-Christmas Slump

Before Boxing Day we were 4th in the league and had a semi-final in the League Cup to look forward to. Things were looking good for the Clarets but we experienced our traditional post-Christmas implosion and suffered heartbreak in the cup. The “win” in the second leg against Spurs came in the middle of a 5 match losing streak in the league – relegation form!

1. The Tottenham side that fateful night at Turf Moor included future European Cup winners Luca Modric and Gareth Bale. But who scored Tottenham’s first goal to make it 3-1 on the night?
[1 point]

2. And the London side scored almost immediately after the re-start too. Who got their second goal to make it 3-2?
[1 point]

3. On December 28th we made our first ever visit to Doncaster’s spangly new Keepmoat Stadium only to lose 2-1. Which “uninspiring” figure was the Doncaster manager at the time?
[1 point]

4. The last of our five consecutive defeats was away at Watford. Sean Dyche had taken up a coaching role at the Hornets and there was also Clarets connections in their side that day with Jack Cork and Jon Harley both playing. But who was their manager on that day?
[1 point]

5. We brought in a young defender to cover our right back slot in January 2009. He was signed on loan until the end of the season from Middlesbrough. Who was he?
