Burnley foodbank Burnley FC in the Community

The number of people asking for help from a Lancashire food bank has quadrupled since the introduction of new social distancing rules.

Burnley FC in the Community - the club's charity - received 60 referrals on Thursday and said 650 people including 252 children had benefited.

The playing squad also made a cash donation which has been matched by the football club.

Had a long phone call about all this today. Apart from the fact I’m in self isolation I’m not permitted to help physically in any case but one thing I was asked was could our wheelie bins be placed in supermarkets and of course the answer was yes. So please consider making a donation if you are in a local supermarket and see one of our bins.

The collections at matches this season have been a huge success, way beyond our hopes. We look forward to the day when we can get back out there and help those in most need.

Again I’ll take the opportunity to thank those organisations who have manned the bins during the season:

Accrington Clarets
Boundary Clarets
Central Lancs Clarets
London Clarets
North Manchester Clarets
Up the Clarets
West Yorkshire Clarets

And above all my thanks to every single one of you who has made a donation.

Good stuff. There must be some folks right in the mire with the effects of this bloody virus. Is there somewhere to easily drop off stuff without coming into contact with anyone? A collection point of some sort?

Just posted above, the bins are going in the local supermarkets. I think I was writing it when you posted.

They have to be secure though. Someone would be stealing the stuff otherwise.

Tony first of all a big well done to all involved with the foodbank collections. I believe that there is an on-line donations page for those who cannot support in kind. I think that it will be a good idea to give out the link on here.

Tony, I’d like to donate money as I’m not really local to these supermarkets, can I transfer yourself?

My Grandad is in his late 80s and can’t get too church and his biggest stress at the minute is the fact he can’t get to church to donate to the homeless and less needy? The guy will always be my hero. I’ve had to send numerous emails this week just to ask about donating

Thanks Tony. May I suggest you put up a sticky with the link? Could be useful for people who do not know about the fund.

Bfcboyo now thinks food banks are a good idea and will donate after previously stating they were not needed and abused by scroungers.

Been a number of donations since I put the link up so big thanks to all those who have

With the foodbank need increasing, it is going to be vital during this period until we can get out with the collecting bins again on match days. Once we are able to start again I think we'll also be able to receive cash donations and I am hoping that we can have an Up the Clarets event to help raise money for the Community Kitchen, potentially a dinner when it is safe for us to organise it.

Again, a huge thanks to all those who volunteered and to all those who have donated this season either on match days or through this justgiving page.

I love reading the messages. I also didn’t know just giving only charges 5% of the gift aid part of the donation. I thought it was 5% of everything raised. Feel much better about that.
