Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Just checked Will Grigg's scoring record at Sunderland; 5 goals in 38 appearances. Maja's exit cost them dearly in the end.
I enjoyed the series apart from the close-up camera angles they switched to as the goals were being scored.
It just made it more difficult to follow than the usual MOTD type footage.

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Chris Maguire was one of the big names signed by Bury in our moneybags summer of 2017 when the aim was to get into the second tier. It didn't work out like that. In the end, Bury were the first club to be relegated in Britain that season thanks to a glactico mentality rather than honest endeavours and team spirit.
He left after the relegation to go to Sunderland, saying he should never have signed for such a small club and that he couldn't perform in front of such low crowds.
Consequently, Maguire is now hated for taking such vast amounts of money and showing next to nothing for it, so I have to ask:
IS THAT #### MAGUIRE IN IT?
I've seen the Twitter clip of Charlie Methven suggesting a trance tune from 1999 should replace Prokofiev as the run-out music, but that's it so far. The clip just reminded me of the meeting that presumably took place at Bury when Stewart Day took over, when it was decided that I Love It by Icona Pop should be played at skull-rattling volume before games. The bass on it was so heavy it was tickling the end of my nose, and it was so loud I had to shout to be heard by my dad who was sitting next to me. Methven is just like every other type who comes into a club that's been there for years claiming to know what works and what doesn't. He'll have my blood boiling by the end of the series.

I’ve got one to watch of the second series. It’s a while since I watched the first but this one seems to devote a lot more time to the actual games rather than the behind the scenes stuff

Just finished it, great series.
Whilst I didn’t like the way Charlie spoke to that lady in marketing, I’ve worked with people like that and they’re nothing out of the work place but usually very good at their job and addicted to work and success. I understand why he was the way he was when the staff were useless and didn’t seem to listen or care.

I didn’t think he was as bad a some on here. His posh boy Southern accent might have rubbed a few up the wrong way. Right or wrong he certainly knew what he wanted.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 6:35 pmWhilst I didn’t like the way Charlie spoke to that lady in marketing, I’ve worked with people like that and they’re nothing out of the work place but usually very good at their job and addicted to work and success. From what I’m told I don’t think there many in Sunderland unhappy when he left at the end of last year.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 6:35 pmJust finished it, great series.

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Another great series. Makes me realise, further still, just how lucky we are!
Re: Sunderland Til I Die
From watching the second series was not only he a foul mouth bully but from the clips it was showing he didn’t bring much to the table either. He spent a lot of time telling his teams it wad their job to come up with income generating ideas but had none of his own.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 10:13 pmFrom what I’m told I don’t think there many in Sunderland unhappy when he left at the end of last year.
The real forensic dissecting of the finances was being undertaken by the new owner who was going through the costs line by line - or trying to - and trying to make big in-roads on the massive wastage which he seemed to be doing successfully.
It sounds like they saved another few hundred thousand of unnecessary costs getting rid of Charlie boy !!

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
there was a telling remark when charlie entered the office saying "of all the clubs I've supported " etcetera.
when bemoaning sunderlands poor showing.
what type of person involved in football has a series of clubs they support?

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Decent series. The chief exec bloke was an absolute weapon and the chairman sounded like David Brent.
Don’t get they ‘deserve better’ stuff they are just another football club one who just happen to have a huge catchment area so are well supported in terms of numbers.

Doesn’t surprise me, you can try too hard sometimes to be 1 of the lads to get onboard, the working class folk in Sunderland can see past that & I think they’d find it difficult to establish affinity with somebody with a completely different background.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 10:13 pmFrom what I’m told I don’t think there many in Sunderland unhappy when he left at the end of last year.

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Charlie reminded me of a football manager who just shouts obscenities when their team is losing instead of offering guidance and advice. Not someone you can suddenly warm to and jump on board with.
The bit where he was pushing to get the "record" attendance read out at half time was cringe worthy. He only wanted that to be about himself and him getting the chance to announce the number even if it wasn't correct.
As mentioned above, the fact most at the club are happy to see the back of him speaks volumes.

Currently on the 3rd episode. The young lad O'Nien is coming across very well.
Just googled him, he's actually 25. He looks about 16

Yes have to agree about how he spoke to people.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 6:35 pmJust finished it, great series.

But in one of the first meetings he had with the staff he asked do you know how much the club is paying in interest.
Silence from those in the room.
Charlie " it's in the memo I sent you all".

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Exactly, I’d get ripped to shreds if I didn’t know my numbers at work, but if somebody has given you the numbers and you’ve not bothered even reading them, don’t pull a cocky face, it’s your job and you’re in the wrong. Same when she said if we get them, we get them a few minutes before he’s due to address the crowd, that’s a **** poor attitude. You’ll always notice those when a new manager comes in and stirs the pot, they instantly throw their toys out of the pram. Simple fact, do your job properly and you’ll be left alone, it’s always the lazy sods that hate being told, so leave, never any surprise that they aren’t missed when they leave.

Re: Sunderland Til I Die
Furloughing players is pointless. The scheme only allows up to 2500 quid a month.
The average league 1 player is on about 8k a month. Sunderlands wage bill is massive. Is Cattermole still there on 50k a week?

Exeter have just said that their average wage is £800 per week. Exeter may be an exception I know.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:08 pmFurloughing players is pointless. The scheme only allows up to 2500 quid a month.

Cattermole has left Sunderland.
Why do you think furloughing players is pointless for the lower league clubs ? Why do you think they are doing it if it’s pointless ?

Because it's about a quarter of their wages.TVC15 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:49 pmExeter have just said that their average wage is £800 per week. Exeter may be an exception I know.

Is it worth it for
Bad publicity.
Damage to future sponsorship?
Government potentially taxing football clubs more to get money back? He's already said the self employed will have to pay more in, after their bail out.
Re: Sunderland Til I Die
It isn’t a quarter of their wages for a number of clubs though.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:58 pmBecause it's about a quarter of their wages.

And even where it is that still about £50k a month saving on players plus all the non playing staff savings. Maybe peanuts to premier league clubs but to many clubs it’s a significant amount.
I’m not sure about the players contracts but for the non playing staff it’s unlikely the club are under any obligation to make up their wages to 100% so furloughing them could be saving them more than £2.5k a month.
I still don’t understand why you are saying it’s pointless. It seems like it would be pointless - almost negligent - not to go down this route.
Re: Sunderland Til I Die
I'd be amazed if the average league 2 player was earning that much. I'd guess about half of that.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:08 pmFurloughing players is pointless. The scheme only allows up to 2500 quid a month.
