MPs getting £10,000 to work from home

Post by Woodleyclaret » Thu Apr 09, 2020 5:23 pm

A massive pxxstake
They criticise footballers for greedy behaviour and this payment is totally unwarranted with people struggling on universal credit and furloughed jobs
Typical of our MPs already overpaid wanting more

There's probably a decent discussion to be had on this subject but when you completely misrepresent it as you have done in your opening post then its no wonder facts and sensible debate are in short supply these days

I guess it will be about additional costs, not just being incurred by MPs but also their staff. I've just had a look and that is the case. Also about buying additional equipment, like laptops etc.

You can spot the trade union/labour members a mile off....

The same trade unions that employ corrupt leaders who have skimmed millions over the years. The same labour MP’s who will take the £10,000 offered and ask for more!

If it’s needed fair enough. Can’t picture too many scenarios where MPs don’t already have what they need, but there might be few.

Perhaps I was naive posting about corrupt MPs
Everyone knows they are kind and considerate and not in the least bit in it for the money.

What did they do with their existing annual office budget of £26,000 ?

It’s a £10k extension to their office budget, should it be needed to kit up members of their teams to work from home as their offices are closed but the country still has to be run. Most office workers aren’t geared up to work at home on extremely secure laptops.

Sensible measure being used to cane the government during a world crisis (again).

Will MPs be getting 80% of their £80,000 salary? I won't hold my breath.

That's good and I dare say that many of them will be doing the same. I was actually being factious about the 80%, however, the 10K for WFH is OTT. Do you know what the rest of us get for doing the same? £6.00 a week tax relief and MPs can claim that too.

My local MP, well known for courting publicity, has not been seen or heard of for weeks. He's certainly not doing constituency or support work.
The Burton MP, Kate Griffiths who hilariously replaced her ex-husband, a sex-texter, and promised the earth when elected is even worse.

Posters will either support this bonus for our MPs, others will think they are, collectively, a bunch of grasping, hypocritical chancers.

It's not about party politics, they will all get it (I suppose), but don't they get paid expenses for having to work away from home?

Can’t beat a bit of mock rage these days. It’s necessary to keep things working. My organisation (university) purchased 250 laptops to give to people to work from home, it is what was necessary to ensure continuation of business. We still have thousands of students to look after and educate, and we can with this type of investment.

My local MP, Nigel Evans has not been seen or heard of recently. He isn't even responding to constituents emails/twitter questions. He isn't doing anything whatsoever to help anyone, so why does he deserve an extra £10k?

In that case he doesn’t deserve an extra £10,000 and he won’t get it.

My next door neighbour is the no.2 to the local MP , he has had a struggle getting a couple of constituents back from the Far East. He managed to get them back to Heathrow, plenty of trials and tribulations went on after trying to get them back up north so in the end he drove their himself to collect them and take them to their home. Perhaps this where the extra budget is being spent?

just for the sake of balance i did some research-you know that thing you do before you spout your mouth off. The money is available to be applied for if needed to set up home offices for MP staff. Expense claims have to be submitted and ratified and the 10k is a maximum, not a minimum. The plan has been put in place by an independent body outside the control of the MPs. just in case any of you knub nuts were wondering. Sorry to spoil your fun.

If true the Members have given themselves special priority despite the recent disgrace about expenses. All that was necessary was to say that extra costs up to £10,000 or other would be reimbursed on submission of a reasonable expense claim which might also reflect reduced travel and hotel costs. This would be another selfish, me-first decision.

Good as time as ever to try and sneak this in under the radar.
Who is gonna bother about £6.5m extra a year ?
And after the crisis has finished everyone will have forgotten and we can just leave it in.

This thread    I’ve read it all now!!

MP’s able to reclaim expenses incurred for setting up their staff with home working arrangements! What a shocker! Burn down the Houses of Parliament.

Not as good as today’s Daily Mail front page, mind. “Minister travels home from work to be with his family... oh and provides his elderly parents with food/medication”. Boris should sack him straight away when he’s out of hospital (if he doesn’t have the decency to resign first, of course).

They all will be.

If they were publicising all they are doing, they’d be accused of taking advantage of the situation for political gain. If they don’t, they’re sat on their arses collecting a salary. Can’t win.

People would have more to complain about if their MP’s weren’t able to make appropriate provisions for home working and completely unable to work at a time of national crisis.

The same bloke who has a 2.5 million London townhouse, a 1.1 million country home, yet still manages to get taxpayers to fund a 3rd property in his constituency, at 2k a month. Still, we're all in it together.

Shows how backward they are.
It’s not 1988.....it costs nothing to get staff set up with remote access / working from home.
What work would their staff be doing which would need any significant expenditure ?
Nice round number though is ten grand - sounds like it’s been very scientifically calculated.

Well they’re obviously going to set the budget at a round number aren’t they. They aren’t just being given £10,000, they’re being given an increased expense budget, as they will undoubtedly be incurring additional expenses. Not sure what the problem is here.

The point was there was little science to the way it had been calculated - but thanks for your arsey reply.

What are these additional expenses they will be “undoubtedly incurring” for staying at home and not travelling ?
I can’t remember being given additional expenses for working from home and I don’t know anyone else who has got these either.

And the problem is pretty obvious - they are MPs who are paid for out of the public purse and they do not have the best record when it comes to agreeing their own set of rules and abusing these rules when it comes to expenses do they ?

The point was there was little science to the way it had been calculated - but thanks for your arsey reply.

What are these additional expenses they will be “undoubtedly incurring” for staying at home and not travelling ?
I can’t remember being given additional expenses for working from home and I don’t know anyone else who has got these either.

And the problem is pretty obvious - they are MPs who are paid for out of the public purse and they do not have the best record when it comes to agreeing their own set of rules and abusing these rules when it comes to expenses do they ?
Not sure why you thought my response was arsey, it certainly wasn’t intended to be. Although it seems like a common theme on the board at the minute that if someone disagrees with another’s point of view then they’re being arsey.

There’s no science to the way that it’s been calculated because there doesn’t need to be. It could have been up to £100,000 but the expenses would still need to be legitimate.

The expenses are obvious. IT and communications for starters. Computers, printers, fax machines, a dedicated broadband line perhaps, IT support, IT security, software licenses, stationery, electricity. I could go on but hopefully you get the point. And I gather this isn’t a budget just for the MP, it’s also for their team.

As far as I’m aware, MP’s aren’t being given £10,000 to spend how they please. They are being told they can claim up to £10,000 each on legitimate expenses incurred through working from home.

Since working from home I’ve bought a home office desk, a printer and stationery, all of which I’ve expensed.

Of course MP’s don’t have the best record with illegitimate claims for expenses. I would like to think that expenses are more strictly monitored and approved now. No doubt there will be some abuse but that’s a different matter altogether.

As I said it’s not the 1980s.
If an MP was to use it for buying a new desk then that in my book is abuse and not a necessity.
As for the other things you mention I would be amazed if MPs are not already set up to work from home - that would be wreckless to not have contingency procedures for them and for some of their staff.
I simply do not see the need for it and and I have not heard of anyone else who had been granted this kind of expense budget for working from home...

At the very least it does not send out the best of messages to the rest of the country who are going through financial hardship
....whilst the likes of Hancock jump on the bandwagon of asking footballers to take pay cuts why have MPs not offered to take a pay cut ? The vast majority of them have secondary incomes or are from privileged backgrounds and you are saying they might be claiming a few quid for extra electricity because they are working from home ?!!!

You’re straying off point though. I criticised the pillorying of footballer numerous times on here, particularly from people on relative high salaries themselves. That really has little to do with the issue in hand.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable that any employees, whether they be public servants or working in the private sector, are able to claim for additional costs incurred when working away from the office.

I see where you’re coming from but why should the MP’s have to pay for new IT, stationery etc? Even the electricity you mention, if it costs an MP a measly additional £20 more per month and their two staff the same then why shouldn’t they be able to claim for that £60 per month?

I didn’t have a desk at home. My bedrooms are all used as bedrooms and with a child at home our open plan kitchen/dining room wasn’t ideal. So I worked for a week using an ironing board as a desk!! Why shouldn’t I have the correct equipment to be able to perform my job properly?
