ARTICLE: Win against Stockport helps lift the gloom
Arguments in the boardroom, unrest on the terraces, and then we beat Stockport in early 1996

Weve come long way in so many ways since then, and still Clive Holt is on the board.
Re: ARTICLE: Win against Stockport helps lift the gloom
Ian Helliwell, nothing else, just Ian Helliwell.

I presume the kit argument was regarding Frank Casper’s ‘Super League’ brand replacing the current supplier of Mitre?

Recall both the Stockport game and the Carlisle debacle. For the game at Stockport I was with my son and met a friend from my younger days living in Haslingden there. He was with his two sons, one of whom went on to play for Burnley before leaving for football at the Hawthorns and then Southampton. It was grim that day at Brunton Park played on 3rd round FA Cup day,I believe.
Edit Meant to say for the game at Carlisle.

David Allison (Referee for this match) was the French Master at Bentham Grammar School where the Wife worked as a House Mistress in the Senior Girls Boarding house.
I played Cricket with him in the staff team....
We discussed this match many times he said it was one of the easiest he refereed, although knowing the history between Stockport and Burnley he was expecting a bloodbath .
On a side note David is great friends with Martin Dobson and he regularly came to Bentham to see David and help coach the boys football team ......
Cheers for the article CT it brought back many memories.....

It was that company. John Gilbraith was the main man with that company. He asked why they had been refused the opportunity to bid. Rothwell said they were welcome to but Gilbraith had confirmation from Blakeborough that they would not because they were too local.burnmark wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 12:06 pmGoals are on the link below:

How long after did we sign Helliwell?
Amazing there was seven goals in that game considering the game stopped for a good few minutes every time they got a throw in.

5th in the table at the half way stage, that surprises me given the poisonous atmosphere at the club. Bit like the Laws season

Went to both games. Remember the Carlisle game like it was yesterday, we were dreadful as the score line suggests..
I said to my late father who was sat next to me, that if we don't get shut of Mullen and Teasdale, we are going to have another Orient on our hands

Didn't we have the two adidas kits after Mitre and the the Super League kits?burnmark wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 12:06 pmGoals are on the link below:

Edit: should've read the article before I posted.
Fortunately i missed most of that season as I was away at Uni. I did apply for the manager's job when Mullen was sacked; I still have a draft of the letter and the reply.

Was your wife House Mistress at Collingwood or Ford house Bosscat?Bosscat wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 12:24 pmDavid Allison (Referee for this match) was the French Master at Bentham Grammar School where the Wife worked as a House Mistress in the Senior Girls Boarding house.

I left BGS in 1980, Dave Allison was a linesman at that point, never saw Martin Dobson at the school, I guess the friendship didn’t happen until later.
Had some great times at that school, sadly no longer exists as Bentham Grammar.

She started in 86 Heath at Ford House.
When BGS sold Ford they moved all the juniors up to Collingwood (which became Bridge house weirdly) and both Senior and junior girls moved down to Bridge.
It was about 92 when they sold Collingwood and extended Bridge and so all the junior boys and Senior Girls lived in the same property... we lived in a flat in the new bit after we got married, and Jackie and her Husband (who looked after the junior boys) lived in the old flat... The Schools been long gone as a Grammar School and had several incarnations...
I enjoyed 4 years socialising with the Staff Cricket team before my Mrs was made reduntant when the School started shrinking....
Dobbo came about 4 or 5 times a year during the football season and did 2 6th form dinner speeches in my time living there.

Do you ever play in the re-union matches BC? my wife has been on the BGS Facebook page and they have a cricket match, Staff v old Pupils, and something to eat afterwards.Bosscat wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:17 amShe started in 86 Heath at Ford House.

We used to sneak in the Punchbowl and have a half a lager and play pool, the landlord knew we were from the school and shy of legal age, but as long as we behaved, was happy to have us there. Simpler times.
The joiners arms in Burton in Lonsdale, we even got as far, once, as the Snooty Fox in Kirby Lonsdale.
The Headmaster during my time was John Hagen, really liked him, although I got caned once, and my housemaster was Richard Chalmers.
I started at the tender age of nine at Bridge House, Miss Faulding was the house Mistress.
Happy days.
Re: ARTICLE: Win against Stockport helps lift the gloom
No I kept in touch for a while after my Mrs was made redundant but then started my own business and didn't have the time.
Spent many happy hours in the Punch Bowl post cricket with Dave A, Bill Stockdale and co...
Had some great trips with Dave A at Football matches ... He retired from Reffing in 97, after he retired from the Referee Circuit, he started training referees.
Funnily enough in about 2008 I was repairing a Lock at a property in Hest Bank and discovered Dave A lived next door with his partner Sheila (ex English Mistress @ BGS if memory serves) ......

Sorry BC, last question, do you still live in the area?
Bill Stockdale, sent me off once for spitting on the floor, imagine if professionals got sent off for it now.
I had a History teacher called Miss Taylor, she was brilliant.
His Mrs must have started after I left.
Small world.
