Local Cricket

Post by RBFC » Sun Apr 26, 2020 3:13 pm

Whilst we are all missing football and watching the Clarets who is missing the local cricket leagues especially with the fine weather we have been having albeit it’s a little cooler today.

All leagues were due to start last weekend with the Ribblesdale League, Northern League and Palace Shield on Saturday and the Lancashire League on the Sunday.

With the ECB statement on Friday saying the professional season won’t start until the 1st July at the earliest it looks as though very little local cricket will happen this year.

Going forward I wonder what impact this will have on clubs financially, the future of overseas professionals from 2021 onwards and the possible restructure of leagues.

Not sure why Lancs League can’t play. No physical contact between players and minimal crowds so social distancing shouldn’t be a problem. I guess wiping the ball with a disinfectant wipe after every over might prove a bit of a problem tho !!

Me, a lot more than football.

I spend my full weekends at the local cricket grounds with friends and my children. Those T20 nights at Lowerhouse on a sunny Friday evening are brilliant

Are you serious? The lockdown rules in the UK are such that it wouldn’t be permitted even if the league and clubs want to play.

With no football it currently feels like a close season and that usually means watching cricket for me but I can’t and it’s how it has to be right now.

Everyone could remain 2m apart. Wouldn't be an issue.

Slips would probably be a little further apart than normal so expect a few more 4s of the edge of the bat, but that advantage would be for both teams so hardly unfair.

If they can salvage some sort of a season in the local leagues I bet they'd pull some decent crowds. No holidays, pubs closed and not much else going on would tempt plenty of people to their local club.

There is no chance of crowds being permitted during this scheduled cricket season.

I’m missing all sports, playing and watching. You don’t realise how much sport plays in contributing to your individual and group positive mental health.

The whole nation is struggling to stick to lockdown rules and it’s close to breaking as it is. Another three weeks and we will see protests and non compliance as they have in America.

You can’t keep a whole nation inside and distanced over this length of time. Peoples mental health will dictate the outcome.

I personally in favour of herd immunity, and before anyone starts, I have vulnerable/at risk close family, so this is a considered view. A vaccine is months away, next winter will bring another spike regardless.

Sport is the tonic of the nation, it should be played and watched at all levels.

I must admit, my views are stating to change the more I worry about the economy and people’s mental health

Ridiculous to even suggest the possibility of people attending cricket matches this year. My brother is 75 and is concerned about attending football again and he's been going on nearly 70 years.

Got to be really bad news for local cricket clubs. I imagine a few will struggle to get through this financially.

You always need the smiley to let people know you're joking. ;) (Though I'd have thought the "disinfectant wipe" might have given it away.)

Hopefully people will support their local clubs when cricket resumes. Missing the Sunday afternoons down at Rawtenstall.

We can't hide in our homes forever, waiting for a vaccine that may never come. If we can go to Asda or B+Q I don't think it's so unrealistic to go on your local cricket club, if a bit of common sense is shown.

It is the one game where as a rule the players don't come within 6 feet of each other. Even the slips tend to stand about that distance apart. Probably the bowler running past the umpire is the pressure point - or the fielders running into each other when they can't decide whose catch it is!

How many Lancashire League slip fielders can catch anyway? The slip cordon is designed as somewhere to put the old gimmers who can't run, not to catch people out.

It's interesting how some aspects of lockdown have got embedded in our ways of thinking. Sport seems impossible, no chance, can't even contemplate it.

But then you can all go and shuffle round the supermarket and B&Q together indoors, mixing with dozens of people all breathing the same air. The kids will be back at school at least at some level by June. There's no way they're social distancing in the playground, just won't happen, but they'll still go back. And yet they'll be banned from mixing with 20 other kids outdoors playing footy on a Saturday.

It's similar to the idea that if one cricketer or footballer gets the virus, the whole league will be shut down again. But if someone gets it at an Amazon warehouse or Tesco, they won't be closing. Why is sport so unique in our minds?

It’s a good point, but I suppose it just isn’t considered as essential. It’s ‘unnecessarily’ increasing the risk of spreading the virus.

I am the Secretary of a local Cricket Club. Anyone on here associated with a Club needs to make sure they are applying for the Government Grant available to them if they occupy a property with a rateable value. It will keep our Club going this season even if we dont play at all.

I presume he means the 10k or 25k grant thatlocal businesses can apply for?

The ECB grants don't seem to be much use to our local clubs.

What about a saliva riddled ball that is touched by every player on the field at some point and both umpires.. could always allow them to take some Mr Sheen out to polish the ball I suppose :D

Either £10k or £25k depending on the rateable value. We got the lower one. Its claimed through the Local Authority but ultimately gets paid from Government funds.

Absolutely gutted.

As with the football, for me and many others it is not just about the match. It is a way of life which has suddenly ended. For some of our members at the cricket club it is the only time that they get to socialise. In my experience the Lancashire League clubs and supporters are brilliant in welcoming anyone to attends.

I have only missed a handful of Lowerhouse games in the last couple of decades after I finished 'playing' local league cricket. My parents have been involved with the club since their childhoods, my wife works at the club, I started playing there as a junior, etc etc.

There's nowt better than having a few drinks on a sunny afternoon watching the cricket.

The huge worry is whether local league cricket clubs will be able to survive if this season is cancelled. Most clubs struggle financially from season to season and rely not just on the people turning up for games but the other stuff like hosting functions and events. At Lowerhouse I believe that there were functions booked for every weekend during the season. Huge money spinners like the Friday T20 games are gone unless there is a partial return to 'normality' and we might possibly see a season consisting of just T20 fixtures but even this is unlikely now. I have no idea as to what happens with the professionals who are contracted to play.

Worrying times indeed.

As bad as it is for all of us it may not be disastrous. My club, like many others actually lose money on the cricketing side of the business. By the time you've taken out match day expenses, weekly pitch maintenance, professionals contract, Car, accommodation, flights etc, what you generate through match day income comes nowhere near enough to cover that. Luckily we have a very busy club house and function room that covers the annual shortfall. This is also obviuosly not open now either but hooefully the grant will see us through this tough period.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Going to the Turf for the football, and more so the away games, is seeing friends who but for the football I wouldn't even know. Five of us go to the away games, two of them I've seen on my phone during our weekly quiz and another when he's dropped food off at the door. You are so right Dressinggown, our way of life has ended in so many ways right now.
