Possibly for the virus???? Followed by two weeks in isolation. But ideally I’d have suspended passenger travel.....do you understand that?

I'll ask again, which test? Temp test? Full virus test?
Who would police the isolation?
The majority of passengers arriving are those brits stranded abroad, should we just have left them where they were?

There's probably around half a million infections in the UK. Picking up a dozen on incoming flights isn't going to tip any balance.

I could understand other countries not allowing flights from here though.

I’m aware of that. But I prefer true statements from politicians. The surprising thing for me is regarding unrestricted inward air travel!!!
Have you followed the reason that there are no restrictions on inward air travel?

Something like this:
1) quarantine the small numbers of returning travellers who had been exposed to covid-19, cruise ship(s), Tenerife hotel;
2) but no quarantine for all the other people returning to/coming into UK, because covid-19 was not wide spread at the time;
3) Instructions to self-isolate etc etc if you have the symptoms;
4) Understand that people come into UK via, airports, seaports, Eurotunnel and Ireland;
5) Understand that some of the people coming in are delivering food, manufactured goods and raw materials;
6) Understand that these delivery people and others also export goods from the UK;
7) Understand the period you can be infected but not show any symptoms;
8) Also, understand there is no test that can guarantee if the test was performed you'd identify everyone with symptoms;
9) So, covid-19 also became wide-spread in UK, because it couldn't be "stopped at the borders."
10) Thus, focus on controlling covid-19 with social distancing etc etc etc.
11) Understand that the "front line" needs a lot of PPE and this, including the plastics which is the essential raw material for PPE, is mostly made abroad.

So, how would you have tackled this issue?

Agreed. I also think he's right not to tell us when it's predicted that lockdown will be eased. The last thing we want is to be told when we think it'll happen, and then for it not to happen. IMO he's completely correct not to share that until they're sure when it can happen - which can't be until the numbers say so.

Who governs horse racing? Who attends horse racing?

Agree, I was surprised it wasn't postponed. I was surprised people went.

But, wasn''t Cheltenham more than a week before we went into lockdown?

are you sure? I thought Liverpool had a European game mid-week around same time. I know City game was called off, but I can't remember which day of the week that decision was announced. We played Spurs the w/end before.

Well, we keep getting told that we'll have 100,000 tests per day by then end of the month.

They used it a couple of times, which they are free to do.

Of course if you burn your house down but manage to save your wallet you could call that a success.

well they're not wrong are they? they have flattened the curve and the NHS has been protected by the lockdown (so far).

Trouble is, and I suspect it is the same in Burnley, around here (MK) people are already "back to normal" - reports that Tesco in MK was as busy as a normal Saturday; people visiting family elsewhere (...but its alright - we kept 2m away... no Doris its not alright -the 2m is for when you have to leave the house for essential tasks); We had bloody street parties down our road with neighbours blaring out loud music for 4 hours on Saturday night - 2m rule again observed (until Maureen decides she wants to kiss everyone because the alcohol has got to her head!).

The mind boggles at some people and the total and utter disregard for what the lockdown is trying to achieve. I bet each and every one of the dickheads flouting the rules are out religiously every Thursday at 8pm to clap for the NHS... I know the ones in our street who had the party are out every Thursday night whooping and banging saucepans, *****.

A better analogy would be that if someone else burned your house down but you managed to save your wallet, you could call that a success. Whatever else the government may be at fault for, it didn't start the fire.

Why would it not be called a success that the NHS hasn't been overwhelmed? It was what they set out to do with this lockdown, and it has worked.

The question is what their ambition is now with the lockdown. Is it still to keep the NHS from being overwhelmed, or have they got other ambitions?

Id imagne a far right Tory Party will want lockdown over with yesterday..their sponsors in big buisness are already leaning on them..Currently theyre desperatley trying to appear averse to lifting restrictions whilst prvately workng out how soon they can get away with it.

Its clear that "lockdown" is now being eroded in some parts of the uk and as always our behaviour will mirror that of the yanks eventually. The British proles will decide the fate of lockdown, probably within the next 2 weeks.

To extend the anaolgy a little further, they didn't need to stand there and toast the marshmallows whilst watching the fire get out of control, but they did. I do think that once the sweet taste of the melted marshmallow had gone they did think "ahh ********, look at it now..." and are actually trying to sort it.. ;)

I despair sometimes at the dumbasses in this country,and you can guarantee they'll be the ones whining at the government not doing enough,take some personal responsibility FFS,this is not a holiday.

On your broader point the lockdown is generally having an effect,the spread is slowing,and the NHS has managed to avoid being overwhelmed,and this is without using the Nightingale facilities remember,however the tricky judgement is when to start easing(and it will only be an easing) restrictions,and trying to get some aspects of the economy moving again.

I think there will be a lot of illnesses "detected" with everything that is going on. The typical symptoms for Covid-19 are quite generic and patients will present with these and be tested but not actually have the Coronavirus - so it must be something else. Often, doctors do like to "label" a diagnosis and I think this is what is happening here - there is a hypersensitivity to health issues at the moment and it is causing a(n) (over)reaction perhaps.

I hope you're right pal. Although it does mention in one of the papers that medical staff in Italy and Spain have also noticed this, so isn't something the UK have just randomly noticed.

What will be the difference in a VERY CAREFUL AND GRADUAL relaxation of the lockdown NOW and a very careful and gradual relaxation of the lockdown in, say, another 6 weeks time?

Will anything have significantly changed?

From what I can tell, they need the numbers to drop for a certain length of time. Leaving it another few weeks will add confidence.

Boils down to the explanation that we are following ‘the science’. My own feelings are this is limited to acceptable ‘science’ from hand picked scientists. Certainly isn’t the advice that the majority of Bsc’s believe.
It’s not a handful of Brits returning - it’s all flights. Total madness to submit these to a simple questionnaire. Do people know how quickly and widely this actually spreads???

As pointed out "Tory Grandee" used to mean distinguished former MP or Peer. Now it's shifted to mean major donor or billionaire telling the government what to do.

"The health secretary announces a "life assurance scheme" for NHS and frontline staff.

He says the family of staff who die from coronavirus will receive a £60,000 payment."

-----------------------------------------------------
