Assume there will be a process like the rest of any expenses they claim for guidelines of what they can spend this on and having to justify any spend.

Oh yeah? What did they use for the modelling - plastiscene?
If the lockdown had not been imposed then the rate of infection would have remained well above 1; which combined with a mortality rate of roughly 1% would have led to this sort of 6 figure death toll....not least because of the fact that the NHS would have fallen over. I'm no supporter of this government but their actions (although taken too late) have prevented this.

What will be the difference in a VERY CAREFUL AND GRADUAL relaxation of the lockdown NOW and a very careful and gradual relaxation of the lockdown in, say, another 6 weeks time?

Will anything have significantly changed?
FactualFrank has already pointed out an increased confidence level....but I think there is a more solid issue which is that with reduced numbers it becomes more possible to introduce track and trace with any success.

Paul Waine and Grumps - I would have suspended all passenger flights into the country - including those Brits who took advantage of cheap flights in March. Hope this clarifies?
Thanks, Jack. All passenger flights from all countries? What date did you want to do this? Would you have suspended before I flew to Austria 7th March or before I flew back 14th March? I booked August last year.

Did you miss IPSA's letter where they explained what the £10k covers? It's (just) an extra office costs allowance resulting from covid-19.

Details are also published on IPSA website - and we can all read the rules/guidelines published for MPs.

https://www.theipsa.org.uk/ipsa-for-mps/

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic: Guidance for MPs and staff
updated 26 March 2020

This is an uncertain and challenging time for the country. IPSA is committed to supporting MPs and their staff to carry on with their work as far as possible and in accordance with government guidance. This guidance sets out the immediate measures we have put in place in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The situation is changing on a daily basis, and we will review our approach on a regular basis to support you.

We will do all we can to enable MPs and their staff to continue their work by making it as straightforward as possible to deal with IPSA and receive funding for parliamentary work; and to ensure IPSA, MPs and their staff can respond to new situations that occur as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. We will continue to deliver core functions, including paying MPs’ and staff members’ salaries and business costs, paying direct suppliers, making payroll changes and registering new office and accommodation properties.

To achieve these aims, we have: • Provided an additional £10,000 to each MP’s office costs budget to support the setting up of working from home arrangements. This will take immediate effect and this additional amount will be available until the end of the 2020-21 financial year. • Ensured all payment cards are switched on and increased the monthly credit limit to £10,000 to help with cash flow. The single transaction limit has been increased to £5,000. Until further notice, we will not switch off payment cards as a result of late reconciliations. However, please do keep to the usual deadlines if you can, and unless you are experiencing disruption to your office as a result of the coronavirus. • For costs incurred since the start of January 2020, suspended the 90-day rule for claims. This means that you can still claim for these costs, even if you are unable to meet the normal 90-day deadline. If you do not have access to a receipt or invoice as a direct result of the coronavirus, and cannot wait for reimbursement, we will pay a claim without evidence and ask you to send in the evidence as soon as you can. • Provided additional funding from the staff absence budget, in case staff members are unwell or otherwise unable to work. • Provided guidance below on the changes and the existing flexibilities within the Scheme that will allow you to respond to the pandemic.

No, hypocrisy by accusing someone of making arrogant assumptions before doing exactly that yourself moments later.

You brought race into this, then insinuated that race had nothing to do with the reason why it was posted, then contradicted yourself by suggesting that another race wouldn't have acted in the same way. Again, just moments later.

Not exactly covered yourself in glory.

For the record Dazzler, I reported the post. I believed that your intention was to incite a reaction because the image showed a group of Asian lads. The trouble is, there was no evidence of timeframe - I.e. when the photo was originally taken. This is important, as it would either condemn them or prove their innocence. As it was, without any timeframe for the image, to me it was clearly a post to incite a reaction like I said before, and it has no relevance on this thread or forum.

Just some points from the Texas Governor today regarding lockdown and coming out of lockdown, plus other important info that might be a pointer for other actions, plus what can be expected, main points below:
April 30th stay at home orders finish but remain in please as an advisory
1st May, Phase I - several businesses can open in limited capacity, including surprisingly, restaurants, theatre, Cinemas, museums, stores, specifically excluded are bars/pubs, nail/hair salons, barbers. However those allowed to open can only open to a 25% capacity and ensure adequate distancing as known. NOTE: For places such as museums that have interactive displays where people are touching things these will NOT be allowed to open.
18th May, Phase II - ONLY Happens if no spike seen in previous 2 weeks. - Businesses open in Phase I will be allowed to go to 50% and more businesses will be allowed limited opening.

Lot's of other things and in addition below is what is going to happen in conjunction with above, note in reality Texas not hit that hard as many others, 600 dead to date, with some counties having very small impact, indeed in relation to the above any county that can prove 5 or less dead due to the virus will be allowed to move to a 50% opening during Phase I.

The plan appears to be sensible and I understand many businesses will follow same path, on a conference call this morning one large office in Huston will open May 1st but will be phased in the number of employees allowed back and all will have to go through the main entrance. Additionally all group leaders had to submit the phased approach for the group in question and show numbers, names and seating/office areas that ensured more than adequate spacing.

Does anyone disagree with this? Curious.
Which bit? I disagree that the church should be telling the government what to do. However, I also agree that what the church are suggesting has some merit.

I think this would be better served on another thread regarding the economic effects coming out of C-19 or even the Boris missing thread, which is also now a political thread, such that this thread can remain for people wanting to talk about potential cures/deaths, just my thoughts, where I would answer but not here.

BBC Pandorama - Last year, the govt's own advisors warned that gowns were needed in the NHS stockpile.... none were bought.

Of course I expected some sort of reaction,a reaction that they were showing contempt & total disrespect.
This is a thread about Covid 19 with people commenting on such measures as social distancing.
It wouldn't have mattered to me if they were white, yellow, brown, blue or red I would still have shaken my head in disgust and yes I would have had the urge to show the world the disrespect on view.

A word of caution to people who think this is almost over...

My daughter is a Cardiac Nurse in a city hospital. They are so busy dealing with coronavirus patients. Last wednesday she started at 8am and instead of finishing at 6pm as normal, the team had to work through to 5am thursday morning.

She was 'on call' last weekend. She was called in at 7am on saturday morning and there was no food available (not even leftover patient's meals) until she got home 14 hours later. Same on Sunday, although she took some packed food.

Some of her friends are community nurses. They now have to make 20 visits per day and are finding on average 2 dead patients each day.

The government figure only shows hospital deaths is so wrong. There are probably 45,000-50,000 when you include those that die at home and in retirement / nursing / care homes.

Those rushing to lift the lockdown need to rethink.

Thanks, Jack. All passenger flights from all countries? What date did you want to do this? Would you have suspended before I flew to Austria 7th March or before I flew back 14th March? I booked August last year.
Thanks Paul, I guess both you and Grumps are actually so active on this subject due to your extreme guilt at having to be rescued from your ‘exotic’ holidays. Bit daft to fly out in the first place, wasn’t it? Oh, sorry.....you’d already paid for it, so felt duty bound to set off, even though you were putting your families, & everyone else’s health at risk. Do you want to be clapped every Thursday for heroically making your way back home? UNBELIEVABLE

Sweden - 225 deaths per million.

Compare to those Scandinavian who went into lockdown

Norway - 38 deaths per million.
Denmark - 74 deaths per million.
Finland - 35 deaths per million.

If you cancel a paid-for holiday with no insurance recovery purely on the strength of 1 person having died in the UK and the government saying it is safe to travel, then you need to be very rich or very cautious.

Oh, I see you've posted on 2 different threads - with the same comments. Why do that?

So, I took a holiday when the UK was still "open for travel" and my destination was also "open for travel." Why would I not have gone? And, I returned when I had planned to return, and, of course, still paying my own way - and was back in the UK a week before the UK moved to "lock down." I also checked on the status of my destination before I went - and decided there was "no harm" in me being away from London while the UK worked out what coronavirus was.

Why do you say that I was putting anyone's health at risk, never mind "everyone else's health at risk?"

No, no clapping please. It's not my style.

Things we learned from Panorama (well some we knew already)

* There were NO GOWNS, VISORS or SWABS IN THE GOVT STOCKPILE.

* Govt classes cleaning equipment, waste bags & paper towels as PPE for to make numbers sound larger.

* A pair of gloves is counted as TWO items of PPE

The Government downgraded the severity of Covid-19, the same virus they are calling the worst health crisis in a 100 years

"As of 19 March 2020, COVID-19 is no longer considered to be a high consequence infectious disease (HCID)"

This reduces level / quantity of PPE that health care workers are required to wear to treat patients.
