Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll

Right choice or not?,personally i'd argue Cloughie's achievements in winning back-to-back European Cups with a provincial club outweigh Alex's success.

Not even close. Less rounds than the FA Cup. Great manager until the drink got to him but Fergie did it at Aberdeen before ManU and built 3 or4 outstanding teams there.tiger76 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 10:25 pmhttps://www.bbc.com/sport/football/52371056

Is that for his time keeping ?
Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
Taking TWO small provincial clubs to top flight glory AND in the space of less than ten years. No contest regarding glory.

No argument at all with the winner, not sure it could have been anyone else, but I’m amazed to see Shankly with such a low vote. He’d have been second for me although understand Paisley with the number of trophies.

He wasn't post WW2,but you could certainly make a case for him,his career certainly wasn't free of controversy to say the least though, and that must count against him.
A random fact i didn't know,he played for Spurs before going on to manage Arsenal.

Before my time but my grandfather always spoke about Paisley being the great manager, when the general view was Shankly the best Liverpool manager. I think he knew most of the players and staff at Liverpool and Everton at one point. They were quite close as clubs way back.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:08 pmNo argument at all with the winner, not sure it could have been anyone else, but I’m amazed to see Shankly with such a low vote. The great Dixie Dean worked for my Grandfather as well.

Paisley was hugely successful but he had the huge advantage of having worked for and then followed Shankly. Both rightly remembered by Liverpool fans but Shankly is the one revered.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:50 pmBefore my time but my grandfather always spoke about Paisley being the great manager, when the general view was Shankly the best Liverpool manager. What swings it for me is that in 2013, Sir Alex took what was on reflection a very mediocre Man Utd team to the title. No one has done it since.
You just need to look at his Honours section on the wiki page - it’s huge

In my humble opinion, Jock Stein surpasses them all with his achievements with Celtic between 1965-1978 ...
Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
Cannot disagree but Paisley must be right up there he was a real tactician which he relied on more then personality it might be argued he was the brains behind a lot that Shankley did
Clough carried on for to long but he was incredible at building teams alongside Taylor.

Herbert Chapman.
Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
He did it at a time when the maximum wage rule meant that you couldn't buy your way to a title.
You can't do that now, but realistically, you can place yourself in a position where you are one of 2 or 3 realistic contenders.
Clough and Fergus on both managed to get a lot more out of players that others couldn't. When their men moved on to other clubs, they rarely produced more than they had. That's more the case with clough, I suppose. Mr Ronaldo didn't do too bad.

Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
The thing about votes like this is that more people will remember the Ferguson era vs the others from years back.
So I guess it's a case of what era you lived through. For me, it's definitely Fergie.

Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
Not sure that's entirely true.
For a while when Arsenal dominated, they were paying their stars for 'employment' other than as footballers on top of their official wages.
For a time, other clubs couldn't compete with them.
I'm sure the numbers were more modest than in recent times, but I understand that the effect was much the same as the Abramovich effect!

Re: Ferguson voted greatest British manager in Beeb poll
Can't argue with Sir Alex, he's the one everyone else will be held up to compare against.
The main reason is the number of teams he created, inevitable due to his longevity, but still some achievement.
Our own SD is doing a similar job, it's strange how it creeps up on you just how many teams Sean has created since he arrived here. Still successful and with hardly any budget. He won't get the credit he deserves, outside Burnley, but we know how good he is.

Owen Coyles achievements will be hard to beat with Burnley his only failure.

No brainer, SAF undoubtably the greatest British manager. Then it's a toss up between Busby and Shankly. Both laid strong foundations for their respective clubs. Clough did a fantastic job but his assistant Peter Taylor was an integral part of the partnership/success achieved.

Alex Ferguson. The greatest manager. In any sport. Ever.
A bold statement, but one that is hard to argue with.
