Best ever male vocalist.
I'm a massive U2 fan, but when it comes to male vocals, Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert pretty much have it all.

Re: Best ever male vocalist.
Assuming we are talking about singers who front bands etc rather than opera singers and such like.
Freddie had such range and power and it is hard to look past him but one I do like and think has a very good voice is Patrick Monaghan (lead singer of Train).

Rock band frontman, Freddie is untouchable. I’ve never seen anybody control the crowd like he could. Then he had the voice and the songs to make the package complete.

He's definitely up there.
But he's also down here, as one of the best.

Roy Orbison was known to have the range of octaves, but no way could he command a crowd like Freddie.
Brian May looks a tw#t, but he can certainly pick a frontman to leech off.

Folks opinion on their best male vocalist or someone who can command a crowd?
I'm going for Smokey Robbo at the moment but in half an hour that will probably change.
Re: Best ever male vocalist.
Big difference between a great singer and a great front man. Plenty great front men haven’t been great singers and I include Jagger in that - Oasis are a prime example. Whiny singing and not talented as vocalists but even as not much of a fan, you’ve got to concede that they did what they do very well.
Freddie Mercury, again not really my sort of music but I’ve yet to hear a singer of a band as good as he was.

In terms of the best voice, of the countless live acts I have seen, George Michael. Not my taste in music by a long way but as a singer he made it seem so effortless.

Re: Best ever male vocalist.
Up to the back end of last year I'd always said Freddie Mercury had the greatest voice that I've ever heard live. That was until I saw Andrea Bocelli and his voice completely blew me away.
Some great shouts higher up the thread in Elvis and even Meatloaf, but the arguments for controlling a crowd can't stand up as Robbie Wiliams has people eating out of his hand and he's only a fat dancer !!

Nat King Cole has been mentioned a couple of times and is a great shout but Paul Robeson is also up there.

Gotta love Elvis as well though. He could sing just about anything, from rock to ballads.

Re: Best ever male vocalist.
So many great singers already mentioned. I could change my mind every half hour as well
I'll throw in Al Green not just because he was a great singer, but also because he was pretty unique. I can't imagine anyone singing his songs coming anywhere near to sounding like The Reverend.

Interesting choice for an operatic baritone, and probably not known to the majority on here, but I'm a little surprised that you put Nucci above many of his contemporaries in that field.

Re: Best ever male vocalist.
Some fantastic names on this thread. From days gone by such as Nat King Cole & Roy Orbison and the likes of Smokey Robinson.
Arguments on Freddie - the best front man for me but also the best vocalist. Absolutely incredible.
But jdrobbo mentioned the brilliant Andrea Bocelli - he's a bit special.

Re: Best ever male vocalist.
I'm shocked no-one's mentioned Sting in this list,so i'll correct that wrong.
Prince had charisma, and the talent to back his ego up.
Opera hard to see past Pavarotti.
Bon Scott,Chuck Berry,Kurt Cobain,Michael Hutchence, and one from left field Suggs of Madness fame, all merit a mention, not all necessarily great vocalists, but they could all put on a show and entertain a crowd.
