Sunderland Till I Die
Sunderland Till I Die
I’ve been recommended to watch this documentary on Netflix. Has anyone on here seen it and is it any good?

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
Good series
Well worth a watch.
Some poor editing with stadium shots (close-ups of managers shouting at players during game A despite being at Stadium B etc.)
Next series starts later this month. Looking forward to it.

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
Worth watching just to see the anger from the fans at some games and then the despair. We’ve all been through it.
Also, Grayson would hardly inspire you if you were a footballer.

Hasn’t he got 4 promotions on his CV? He mustn’t be that bad.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 1:58 pmWorth watching just to see the anger from the fans at some games and then the despair. We’ve all been through it.

As good as the documentary is, the editing is clearly done to favour some and paint others in poor light.

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
He has those promotions. Have a good friend who supports Sunderland and I told him they’d made a good appointment with Grayson. But when you see his team talk ..... wouldn’t inspire anyone.

1 of the better 1s I'm watching another about bielsa & Leeds at the moment, regarding the STID I think Martin bain could have benefitted from reading the blood pressure thread I got the impression he seemed stressed out whilst there.

The Leeds one is awful. It's a bit like their season, starts off interesting, then you realise it's just Leeds bigging themselves up and then it all falls to pieces.

He's had a varied career - started as a model and then moved into football with Rangers and then Maccabi Tel-Aviv before getting stressed out at Sunderland. He's now CEO of Football Sports Development who run the Indian Super League.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 2:13 pmI think Martin bain could have benefitted from reading the blood pressure thread I got the impression he seemed stressed out whilst there.

He came across very well in the programme to me, but you could sense, well I could he was on edge & the situation at Sunderland was mentally strength zapping for him.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 5:15 pmHe's had a varied career - started as a model and then moved into football with Rangers and then Maccabi Tel-Aviv before getting stressed out at Sunderland. To be fair though, I think any one of us would have been on the edge trying to steer that club out of trouble. If ever there was an example of a club relying on an owner and over spending, there you have it.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 5:21 pmHe came across very well in the programme to me, but you could sense, well I could he was on edge & the situation at Sunderland was mentally strength zapping for him.

I thought he [Martin Bain] came across as a preening, self-satisfied, arrogant prat who thought the documentary would be a feature of how he was guiding Sunderland back to the Premier League.
He was embarrassing.
But it's all about opinions. Yours in just as valid, it's always amazing when two people can watch exactly the same thing and come away with entirely different interpretations.

True, like it’s already been said, he was on a hiding to nothing from the outset, the very moment Ellis short lost interest & reined in the spending it became a damage limitation exercise.

Yep after watching both series got to admit to watching out for their results and wanting them to to well. Unfortunately they seem to be developing the “Leeds” habit of blowing things and just missing out.

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
I watched the 2nd series through in two sittings recently and thoroughly enjoyed it - have to admit to a kind of perverse pleasure in watching the fans having their hopes built up so much while I knew it was all going to come crashing down about them I had forgotten that it was my old hometown club Fleetwood that ended their automatic promotion chances that season, and had to laugh at the angry comments as the fans streamed out of Fleetwood's ground. The series does capture the passion of being a diehard fan though. Could have done with a few more "explainers" as to what was going on for viewers not familiar with the English lower levels though.

I thought that too to a degree at first but then decided he was trying to drive the employees out of the apathy they all clearly suffer from.Rowls wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 6:23 pmReally?

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
I got access to Netflix for the first time about 10 days ago and this was the first thing I watched. Binged both series over 4/5 days; compulsive stuff and some great characters.
I thought Baines was useless; he had the right sort of manners/appearance and a few cliches but no problem solving ability or real management/ organisational skills.
Stewart Donald came across as decent bloke who is pretty dedicated to applying some methodology to turning things around instead of just hoping for the best. He did, though, get overemotional re the signing on deadline day of Will Grigg. Poor decision that which cost a lot of money and acheived nothing.
Charlie Methven I thought had the right sort of business approach to getting costs down/income up but probably needs to work on diplomacy/ personal comms before getting back into the football industry (his style probably works in a lot of industries though).
Good/ interesting cross-section of fans covered in the series I though.

I also thought the music was excellent from the tune at the beginning of the programme to the doom laden track that played when you just knew Sunderland were going to concede a last minute goal

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
I always thought he was decent manager below the premier league and was surprised he never took a team to the premier. But as Tony said he is very uninspiring. That said he may just be uncomfortable with the whole tv thing. I get the impression he was.
Hadn’t realised there was a second series. Will be sure to watch it as really enjoyed the first.

Grayson doesn’t seem too bad, he’s had a decent managerial career. Also sound on a personal level by all accounts I’ve heard. Think he just dislikes interviews. Sunderland a poisoned chalice for anybody.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 1:58 pmWorth watching just to see the anger from the fans at some games and then the despair. We’ve all been through it.

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
I liked a lot of the fans and people working at the club. There were some over-entitled fans who just seemed to want to curse and swear when things weren't going their way (lots of screaming "sh*te" without offering any positive comments) but I doubt that's unique to Sun'lan.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 6:30 pmGrayson doesn’t seem too bad, he’s had a decent managerial career. I thought the ex-forces guy came across really well and the taxi driver has made it big in Argentina it seems https://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/peo ... ns-2853192

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
They blew 3 million on Will Grigg, dont think he was even in the team at the end of last season, just had a peek at the league one table it dosent look like they are going up this season either....I hope this season has been documented for a third series,I've always found Sunderland fans very amicable, its sad to see them in the third tier and struggling to get out of it.

The good news is with the lockdown I was able to fast forward a few series and they do win the North East Counties in a couple of years....

Re: Sunderland Till I Die
A good watch. Makes me feel lucky and proud to support Burnley. The new owners in Series 2 seem only marginally more credible than the previous ones.
But I found myself rooting for them.
Apparently the success of this series has garnered the club huge levels of on-line support worldwide, with big interest in live streams of their matches, especially in the US.
Watching this series encouraged me to take the hot seat on Football Manager (A bit of Furlough/lockdown escapism). Got them back to the Prem in 3 seasons. Kevin Long keeping things tight at the back
