on this day in 1960 : Real Madrid 7 Eintracht Frankfurt 3
60 years ago today, one of the most famous games of all time - or certainly one of the most famous matches ever played in the UK –took place at Hampden.
Back in 1960 football on film was very limited. Apart from the World Cup in 1954, the great Hungary team had only been glimpsed on newsreel.
However, the EC Final between the great Real side with Di Stefano and Puskas and Eintracht was shown live on the BBC. It is undoubtedly for that reason that football fans of that generation were so marked by the match. My Dad said it was the greatest game he ever saw - non-BFC - and that Real the best team along with Hungary. Ferenc Puskas was, of course, the link, being part of both teams.
People who watch the game today so how slow it was and "they couldn't play now". I won't go into that debate.

Remember it well. 134,000 at Hampden Park to watch it. Frankfurt had beaten Rangers 12-4 on aggregate in the semi (6-1 and 6-3) but the Madrid side was something else despite going a goal down in the first couple of minutes. Again it's wrong to try and bring about a comparison with modern times but the Madrid forward line was incredibly talented with Di Stefano orchestrating the whole performance.

Sensational football match at Hampden Park in front of 127,621 adoring Scottish fans.
Because the likes of Di Stefano and Puskas invariably grabbed the headlines, a player like Gento (who himself was world class) was often overshadowed. But our Brian Pilkington was influenced greatly by their left-winger and it certainly did him no harm!

Didn't Di Stefano get a hat trick?

Probably as many again locked outside.
Hard to believe but within a couple of months of that European Cup Final, little old Burnley were in the draw for the same competition of the following season. First Reims and then Hamburg, we managed to avoid Real Madrid.

Gento on the left and Kopa on the right made some forward line. Kopa had returned to Reims by this game. His Reims side were knocked out by a great team the following season.

He did and 'ran the show'. Hence the reference and comparison to Pele' at the time. The complete footballer who represented three different nations in his career. He was way ahead of his time. An incredibly talented footballer just oozing class.

Re. Gento:
I apologise for those of you who know this fact but younger Clarets (not that any of us are "old" ) might not be aware of this record.
Gento still holds the record for European Cup/Champions League titles. Six in all. He played in all five of Reals's victories between 1956 and 1960 (the first five years of the competition) and then in 1966.

Having won it in each of the previous seasons, Real Madrid went out in the first round in 1960/61, beaten by Barcelona.

For the chance of progression you would want to avoid Madrid, but years later in hindsight you would hope we'd have drawn Madrid and seen Puskas and Di Stefano at the Turf, once in a lifetime treat!

We would have played Barcelona had we beaten Hamburg - but it would have been a treat to have seen them on the Turf with Puskas and Di Stefano. They were two unbelievably talented players.claretburns wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 2:38 pmFor the chance of progression you would want to avoid Madrid, but years later in hindsight you would hope we'd have drawn Madrid and seen Puskas and Di Stefano at the Turf, once in a lifetime treat!
