"Can't believe it" moments

Post by TheFamilyCat » Thu May 21, 2020 9:01 pm

Are there any moments in sport, or in general that have left you in genuine disbelief at what you'd seen?

Cantona's kung-fu kick.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6WFL01eLqbA

Even now, when I know what's coming it's still shocking.

Ronaldos freekick vs Portsmouth. The moment he became a superstar imo.

Beckham vs Greece.

Aguero vs QPR

Bergkamp vs Newcastle. Probably the greatest goal I’ve ever seen.

Seaman save vs Sheff Utd FA Cup.

Burnley getting to Wembley by winning the Sherpa van Northern final.. Never thought I'd see Burnley ever play at wembley when it was such a special venue in football.and to the modern day Ronaldo he's done so many special things.

Thompson's looping effort at Reading in the 2nd leg of the play-offs.

This was only moments after Martin Paterson scored that stunning strike with his wrong foot.

Wembley beckoned and then Wade Elliot had that run, the ball broke for him and he steered it into the top corner.

Joy.

1973 Grand National, Crisp was so far ahead of the rest of the field you thought he might start lapping the back markers. Then on that final run in he began to tire, allowing Red Rum to claw the lead back before snatching the win on the line.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCjhsE6kox4

Even re-watching it now, I'm convinced Crisp is going to win. Brilliant commentary (as always) from Peter O'Sullevan.

In the last Euro's
Ireland v Italy coming close to the end of the game Ireland had to win , Ireland get a super chance Wes one on one with the keeper and the keeper makes the save .
I said to the wife that was the chance we were going to get in the game and now it's gone .
Minutes later a super ball into the box and wh get his head on to it none other than Robbie Brady 1-0 cue madness in the stands , as i said to the wife at the end of the game " Can't believe it "

I must confess to being a little surprised when Man Utd won the European Cup in '99 after being soundly outplayed for the previous 90 minutes.

Was going to mention this. Germany were absolutely ruthless, they scored almost every time they went forward in the first half. Apparently the German coach told the players to go easy on them at half time so not to completely embarrass them in front of the home crowd.

Yeah , Brazil blamed the injury to Neymar as the reason for the shock result. Apparently it dented their confidence before the game to lose their talisman.

If I was a Preston fan I might say that Joey Barton free kick. The fella shouting "Waheyy... AW ****!" is one of my favourite footballing videos taken from the stands ever

At the same venue, Rocky on Football's Hardest Awaydays. I went to the Burnley League club after the Swansea game in 2016 to meet Leighton James and his daughter for a drink. I was delighted to meet Rocky there too.
