Do you have family & friends who don't support Burnley

Post by tiger76 » Sat May 23, 2020 6:45 pm

As it says on the tin, anyone who has family/friends who support someone else, unthinkable as that may seem.

As you'd expect being up here i'm surrounded by Celtic & Rangers fans, some of the family support either of the Old Firm, some support Partick Thistle(that stems from my granddad decades ago),and there's even a work colleague who supports Dumbarton.

So anyone got any tales to share about Xmas get-together's and the like when rivalries broke out between family or friends due to different allegiances.

I've two younger brothers, one went rogue and supported Man U. Now his son does too, the dark side has beckoned.

Lots of Liverpool fans in my family (only 1 of whom was born close, though he was a Celtic Season ticket holder in the 60's travelling up from Burnley - he has not been on a match for over 40 years) and a couple of Man Utd ones all born in east Lancs. I stand alone, an uncle stopped following Burnley when Bob Lord sold Dobbo, he has followed Liverpool since, and his offspring followed that lead.

Step father is a Stoke City fan from being a little lad. Mother a Burnley fan all her life. They've both been in the home ends at games between the two. Mother is the one who has to restrain herself from shouting and swearing. Potty mouth ! He does now have a Burnley scarf and a season ticket, but were aren't allowed to take the **** too much. Or take photographic evidence for the family back in Stoke

Two sons, both born in Germany and never lived nearer than 100 miles from the Turf. The eldest of the two first saw the Clarets in 1972 at Bristol City, aged four and a half. He has remained a Claret and is often at the Turf taking photos for an agency for whom he works part time. The other son is a Toon fan who is married to a Sunderland fan and their son also supports the Toon. My other grandson, born in Battersea, is a Chelsea fan.
My dad was a Clarets season ticket holder and my mum was a Rovers season ticket holder!
My missus just likes me being out of the house all day at some time over a weekend ---in normal times!

My Mum's side of the family are Scousers so I'm quite happy for them to win the league. I'm just glad none of my family support B*stards...

Stepson (a lapsed Claret) married a Guisborough Lass and lives up there, so he is now Boro, along with his daughters (all 3 of them) ...

Brother (used to be a Mackem) now a season ticket holder in the JHU since he retired over here.

Various drinking buddies Leeds, PNE, Baggies, Spuds, Liverpool, Manure etc etc in our local "The Boars Head"

My wife and son are season ticket holders for Leicester-I have been a claret since 1961 and saw my first game in 1967 v Aston Villa away.My son was born at the Leicester Royal-you could see inside Filbert Street from there and I took him to the ground and first game when he was 6 years old-plus we lived in Leics from 1990 to 2000, moving back to Leics last December . The Leicester game is always interesting-been to quite a few home and away over the years. Have to say LCFC has become my "second team" but will never outstage the clarets

Not really Steve ... I suppose he was never really a Mackem either ... although he was born in Durham (I am the only Yorkie in our family , the rest all Durham Co) and my mums father was a Sunderland man ... he was a vicar in Sunderland during WW1 .... he (my Brother you met him at the Everton game last year) just looked out for the results. He used to come to BFC occasionally, and when he retired got a season ticket to come with me and the LP Clarets 😁

I’ve one friend that supports Utd, from a family of Utd supporters.

Other than that, absolutely none! Never really thought of it but it must be rare, I’ve plenty of mates and family btw :?

Born in Darwen to parents who were Blackburn season ticket holders and remain life long fans.

Went to school in Blackburn and then worked a mile away from Ewood for twenty five years including their PL winning year so hardly surprising I grew up with friends who were nearly all from the dark side.

Believe it or not I've got into some 'debates' over the years.

My youngest went to the dark side, ManU, whilst at college. Met a lad who went on OT, started going with him. By the time they split she had become a fanatic. Now her and hubby have season tickets though living in Ireland.
My eldest went to Uni at Salford and worked the OT match day restaurants for 20+ years. She loved it for the people she met and a free match. She stayed Clarets loyal though but they are her second team.

My wife’s a South London lass and she supports Palace. My daughters a Claret despite being a Londoner. My son supports Man United - which makes sense for a lad who’s lived in London all his life.

There are a number of men and probably a lot of women who don't even like football.

"Roughly 53% of the English male population follow Football regularly
Roughly 6% watch casually and Roughly 41% have no interest in professional football".
https://www.quora.com/What-percentage-o ... r-casually

I didn't like it myself much this season up to New Year. The matches just before lockdown were superb though. I was hoping for a delay in the season up to the time when we can all go back on the Turf again - and then a resumption of the form where we left off. I guess we will have to put up with 'TV empty stadium cardboard cutout rubbish' though.

Disturbing stuff and I did my best but it is what it is.

We have distanced from him.

My son-in-law is a Baggie, so we have a battle with our grandson. Claret seems to be winning, although if they get promotion, the pendulum could swing back, you know how ten year olds think.

The wife supports Watford, along with my father in law.

My brother in law and the rest of the wife’s family, including cousins, support West Ham. I see more West Ham shirts than probably any other shirt in Kent.

Fortunately, we’ve had a decent return against both in recent years!

Born and bred in Burnley, moved to Glasgow when i was 16,still have plenty of family & friends down there, and once all this CV nuisance is over i'll be travelling down to visit.

Families scattered in various locations Burnley,Cork,Glasgow,Guildford even some over in Germany. And that's just the ones we know about there's rumours that we have kin in Australia and possibly the Scottish islands, but nobodies ever bothered to follow these up.

How come you support Burnley then TY? You must mystify your parents!

I worked at Queens Park Hospital in Blackburn when they won the League in 1995 and of course I had d friends who were Blackburn fans but I'm Burnley born and bread so I would never change my alliegiance.

Have to say I've no friends, just acquaintances, who support Blackburn but one of my best friends is a Sunderland fan. I'm enjoying that friendship now more than I've ever done I would say in football terms. Also have good friends who support Everton, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Preston, Spurs and Wimbledon.

My husband is a scouser but he is more of a Burnley fan to be truthful. My son however supports Liverpool. Wasn't for the want of trying. I took him to the Turf a few times when he was small but he never bought into it. But we weren't flying high 25 years ago and it's fair to say we were shite.

It's strange how some do and some don't. My auntie & uncle emigrated to Canada in 1956. My auntie lost her accent very quickly although it has to be said that was probably a blessing given she was from London. :D I last spoke to my uncle, who has since passed away, in 2004 on the phone to tell him of a family bereavement. Despite nearly 50 years living in Quebec he still sounded as if he was living in Burnley.

Both Burnley fans too.

Nope still got my accent to this day :) most Glaswegians are OK once you get past the Celtic/Rangers rubbish, there's always a few eejits but you get a minority of clowns everywhere.

I've heard of Gerry Cinnamon i'm not really into folk music though so can't tell you if his outputs any good or not.

I guess like most things it boils down to personal taste.

I left Burnley at 19 after marrying a soldier living in Aldershot and Belfast. We did live in Blackburn for a few years and we have lived in Northumberland for the last 12 years. I've never lost my accent. I work with Geordies but I'd never try to be one of them. It's important to me to keep my own identity.

My son was born in Nottingham and although we moved away (to Co Durham) when he was a bairn, he's become a Forest supporter. Probably my fault because when visiting that city to see his maternal gran, I always timed it to coincide with a forest (or Notts CCC) game that we could watch. More disturbingly, he supports Wales rugby because we lived there through most of his school years; added tensions for any W v Eng 6 nations games.

I've moved around the country a fair bit, playing footy (& cricket) in most places so I've had mates who support a wide range of other clubs. The weirdest thing I've encountered is that I've had 3 good football-playing mates who were Leeds supporters and all cracking lads (and good players as well).

I'm the first in my family to become a Claret. My dad is an Everton ST holder. Both Granddads were Liverpool ST holders.
My lads are ST holders with me.

Mates and work colleagues who support a lots of different teams, and the banter is good.

2 grandsons, 1 supports City (can't complain he's a glory supporter, 'cos that's what I was ;) ) the younger grandson is undecided. Their dad has no interest in footie, however...

Son and younger grandson were round today to drop off some shopping, so I decided to wear my Burnley shirt and was met with, "Nice shirt Grandpa".
I think I'm winning.

Dads side of the family from Urmston so Man U fans, mum side from Tottenham.

Was sent to Bobby Charltons soccer school for multiple summers when growing up, no doubt in an effort to indoctrinate me.

Having been born and raised in Burnley there was no choice but to be a claret, though.

All the family interested in football are Yorkshire Clarets from Kelbrook.

Good mates are Citeh, Brighton and Watford fans.
