Jimmy Anderson

Post by ChrisG » Tue May 26, 2020 3:13 pm

Been plenty of folk on here insisting he's an Arsenal fan in the past. Hopefully this pic from the United We Stream Instagram that he's appeared on finally puts paid to that particular myth

He's always been a Burnley fan, a former season ticket holder and he even worked in the ticket office for a while. But he was brought up at a time when we were crap and a lot of kids also had a favourite first division club - Jimmy's was Arsenal. Someone picked up on it, just as they did with Freddie Flintoff and Man City (he's a Preston fan) and suddenly a non-story becomes fact.

I was chatting with him and Glen Chapple at Bowdon Cricket Club last year, and like you say he told us he's definitely a Claret and always has been.

I remember some on the old board insisting he wasn’t a Burnley fan.

He could always baffle the doubters by telling the world how many times he has played for Burnley 1st XI at Turf Moor!

And I'll always throw this one in that he's the finest sportsman this town has ever produced. is it 16 wickets he needs to reach 600 in test cricket and then just a few more to take him into the top three of all time?

Yeah 16 to go for 600 then the aim is for 619 to be tied 3rd of all time, can't see him catching Warne on 708 and such a shame this summer has been cut short due to the ongoing situation, at 37 he may have another summer left to get 3rd.

Big ask given the last two years with first his injuries, now this virus and at 38 this July he cannot have many overs left but what a career he has had. Stuart Broad hasn't done too bad either averaging 1.91 to Jimmy's 2.07 wkts/ innings, about 100wickets and 4 years behind Sir James

Jimmy is fit as a fiddle. When he stops bowling fast for England at 45, he will turn to off spin until retirement at 67.

Would be a shame if he bows out at the end of this summer having had to play in empty stadiums. Next 2 winter tours are India and Australia, not sure how appealing they'll be for him tbh.

Brilliant lad and still find it incredible to think he is from Burnley and even better he went to my school St Theodore`s.
St Teds was also the school the 2nd best ever cricketer to come from this town went to - as all Lowerhouse fans will also agree with.

Not bad for a school that was never even that good at cricket !!

I think the lockdown period and lack of cricket might work in Jimmy`s favour and hopefully lengthen his career a little. I'm sure he will reach the 600 wicket number by hook or by crook and then I cannot see his record being beaten for a very long time.

In the last 10 or 15 years its great to have had so much positive news about sport in Burnley. It`s mainly about football and Jimmy of course but with a world class cyclist and skier in our region too we have not done bad at all.

As good as Blez has been I think your saying that a little tongue in cheek. Plenty of cricketers from the town have played county cricket.

We've forgotten Ian Gradwell, Burnley born and bred golfer. As a teenager he was beating them all and winning all the national championships, leaving Sam Torrance, Howard Clark and countless others trailing. His best achievement being The British Boys (Boys Amateur Championship, a World Championship), which in the last 50 years the only later professionals to win it are Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia; Tiger, etc eat your hearts out. He joined the Pro Tour over here (which was such a modest affair back then) and then faded into obscurity. I think he was voted Burnley Express Sportsman Of The Year but that was all.
Best I ever saw.

He was definitely an Arsenal fan. My uncle was in his year at St Theodore's and he said he was always Arsenal at school. He also had red streaks in his hair at one point in support of them.

He only started supporting Burnley when they became a Premier League club.

He was definitely jumping around like a mad man when Burnley beat Arsenal in the Carling cup, just before promotion to the premier league.

After yesterday's appalling fielding off his bowling you would hope he gets two or more today.Would be a real pity if he were denied the accolade today or tomorrow.
And when is it going to be Sir James Anderson, Boris?

Don’t put it up by the Cricket pitch they’ll be moving soon.
2 to go for Jimmy for 600, fantastic for a fast bowler to stretch a career out such an achievement. Their bodies take a hammering.

Just had this stat messaged to me:

Jimmy Anderson has 13.1 overs to break Murali's record of 33,711 deliveries to reach 600 Test wickets.

That would be a brilliant achievement

Part of me wonders whether I want him to get to 600 today.
If he does so, then he might retire, whereas if he is stuck on 599, he will presumably play at least one more series.
For clarity though, and to avoid criticism on here: I would like him to reach this milestone by 11.10 today.

I was actually lolling at how grumpy Jimmy was getting when those 3 catches went down :D
I really felt for him.....but it was quite funny watching him getting grumpier and grumpier. He'll get there in the next two days, I'm sure. A brilliant sportsman!

Jimmy will not be retiring anytime soon.

He's fit as a fiddle. Their family is quite athletic. They had a 5 a side team down the Turf league with Jimmy's Dad and uncles all playing in their 50s.

The ECB might well say we have better suited bowlers for bowling in 45 degree heat but that's another matter. He will be playing next summer in England I have no doubt.

No congratulations for Broad's superb run-out. Come on, Jimmy, it is a team game after all. ;)

He'd be at his 600 already if England could learn to clutch the ball, how many more drops are we going to see, it sounds a harsh criticism given the fact that England are going to win both these series, but if they want to become number 1 in the world again, it's the finer details such as taking your chances that could make all the difference.

I think any bowler at any level would be frustrated at seeing a dolly like that not taken
