Dental Surgeries to re open
I don't think many of you will be aware, because this had been kept hushed from the mainstream media, but earlier today, all dental practices in England have been TOLD by NHS England to reopen from 8th June.
That's right, you can demand a filling with all the close contact dangers that involves whilst dentists struggle to adapt their premises and obtain the correct PPE, but don't expect to be able to buy a paper clip from WH Smiths for at least another week. Disgraceful.

Good news for a lot of posters on this board, who've pulled their teeth out reading the Covid and Cummings threads.

I agree.
I'm sure no one wants to do a tim noone, toothache in lockdown would be an absolute shocker.

That's the problem, it's far more dangerous than reopening John Lewis and Primark, so why have they been told to reopen a week before, and why was it not in Doris's speech?JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 7:27 pmGood news if done safely. I guess no-one will be in agony if their roots are showing. Nor will a grown-out perm cause as much pain as an abscess.

They've not been TOLD by NHS England at all. They've been advised by the government that they CAN if they are able to. The local emergency hubs will still be operational.Pimlico_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 7:13 pmI don't think many of you will be aware, because this had been kept hushed from the mainstream media, but earlier today, all dental practices in England have been TOLD by NHS England to reopen from 8th June.

Sorry, but I thought easing out of this crisis meant small steps, hence car showrooms and outdoor markets today, because as the great leader said, they have lots of space. Why did he forget to mention dentists then?Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 7:48 pm“Why can a dentist open but a hairdresser can’t?”

'Today, we are asking that all dental practices commence opening from Monday 8 June for all face to face care, where practices assess that they have the necessary IPC and PPE requirements in place.'
So if practices don't have the necessary IPC and PPE requirements in place, they won't be opening.

Re: Dental Surgeries to re open
Hi Pimlico, I'm puzzled. Most medical services have kept going throughout the several weeks, NHS at first halted elective treatments and paused cancer treatments and others that impaired ability to fight infections. These areas have been restarted a few weeks ago. Dental services are also part of the medical services. I'd have put them ahead of buying a car in critical importance. Of course, I recognise that there is more risk of exposure to covid-19 in the very personal treatment of dentistry, but that's the nature of medical services.Pimlico_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 8:24 pmSorry, but I thought easing out of this crisis meant small steps, hence car showrooms and outdoor markets today, because as the great leader said, they have lots of space. As for BJ and the daily covid-19 briefing. I know re-opening dental services was on the "breaking" news headlines. I wasn't listening to BJ's every word. It may be that Hancock had already announced this earlier in the day.

My dentist has always worn protective gowns, gloves and masks as standard. I was surprised they couldn't continue with a controlled appointment system

I'm somewhat gobsmacked that you can't grasp a concept as simple as this -
Dentists - you must reopen
Hairdressers - no ferkin way

Quite simply, dentists provide a necessary medical service, hairdressers don’t.Pimlico_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 10:36 pmAnd they will then be be penalised financially by the NHS regarding their contracts if they don't.

Another one missing the point that dentists is a seriously main danger of spreading the virus. Might as well say everyone and everything back to normal as of tomorrow. Can't believe how ******* thick some people are on here tonight.

Thanks for the unnecessary insult. You asked why dentists are opening but hairdressers aren’t. I expect dentists surgeries are a very high risk place for spreading the virus, in the same way that hospitals and doctors surgeries are. But some people need dental treatment. You’d like to think that people will delay their regular check ups and only people in need of treatment will use them.

Put it this way, would you rather risk having an invasive procedure at the dentist, or going to sit down and watch a match at the Turf? Which can you now do first?

Yes, due to the proximity of the procedure and the aerosol produced. Can you explain why Gp's, opticians, physiotherapists, chiropodists etc haven't been told to effectively open all hours?

No of course I can’t. It’s not my job to tell you that. Maybe the gov feel that dental surgeries are more essential than the others you’ve mentioned. If you were really ill you could skip the GP and go to the minor injuries unit at the hospital for example.Pimlico_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 11:01 pmYes, due to the proximity of the procedure and the aerosol produced. Do you honestly think there’s more chance of the virus spreading in a dental surgery than a football ground with 20,000+ attendees?

Re: Dental Surgeries to re open
Now you have got me very worried. I always viewed dentistry as surgery (being invasive, drawing body fluids, etc) and, as such, would naturally adopt the most stringent and rigorous PPE and hygiene procedures to prevent any possibility of cross contamination and introducing infection. I understand the issue with aerosols but, from what you are implying, surely the problem with aerosols is ever present. If that is the case then, by your own admission aren't any disease, influenza, virus, etc as equally and highly likely to be transmitted between patients?Pimlico_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 7:37 pmIt's not just that, it's the extremely high risk from aerosols that requires very specialised PPE that isn't widely available. Why can a dentist open but a hairdresser can't?
So the next time I pay a visit to a dentist I should do so on the understanding that I am highly likely to be infected by someone else's disease.
Adding post- script, I recall ending up with a cold sore within a day or so of a visit to a dentist a few year ago - never had one in my life before that - may be a coincidence but now you have me thinking.
Re: Dental Surgeries to re open
I thought I'd seen every possible way of criticising the goverment over the past few months.
But complaining about dentists opening ( some have never been shut) and hairdressers not opening, is right up there with the most ridiculous argument of the past 3 months.

Re: Dental Surgeries to re open
My mum was in that category. Years ago she had her cataracts removed. It was a stay in hospital then and when she finally got home she wasn't allowed to wash her hair. It's the only thing I can ever remember that kept her in. "I can't go out with my hair like this," she said having dragged me down to do her housework that she couldn't do herself.
