Watford - What's Happened to Them?
Watford - What's Happened to Them?
Over the last few seasons they have put out a really talented team that were a bit like Wolves are now. Yet last night they were pretty non-descript. What's happened?
Of course the weather was hot so we have to consider that, but their only real threat in the first half was Dawson from dead balls. In the second half they brought on Doucouré and he drove them forward for a time. Pereyra, who I thought was a real talent, was left on the bench. I agree that they miss Deulofeu but is that the only factor?
Unlike most other clubs they also had a system of employing managers for a relatively short time and, if I understand their method correctly, only allowed them to manage the first team with only a small impact on coaching and player staffing.
And for those Pearson haters, Watford's problems seem to have started half way through last season.

4 managers in 1 season is a sure-fire recipe for success!?

Re: Watford - What's Happened to Them?
Difficult to put your finger on any one thing, but Deeney missing a large part of the season didn't help them pre-Xmas, the high turnover of managers can't be helpful, i'm no fan of Pearson, but considering where they were when he took the reins, he's done well to even have them as a 50/50 shot of surviving, they were surprisingly lacklustre yesterday considering they're fighting for their lives, but we played well, and made them look poor for much of the game.
It just shows beyond the big 6, Everton & Leicester, anybody can be dragged into trouble, a couple of long-term injuries, and managerial unrest, and you can easily find yourself in the relegation mix, we'd be wise to remember this for next season, despite our achievements of the last 4 seasons, this could easily be us next season, if things go awry.

I think the constant changing of managers was always going to catch up with them eventually. They have some money but not enough to keep themselves doing well with that way of operating.

Will they tempt SD to return?

They looked good at first under Gracia but whatever happened it soon went to bits.
That cup final drubbing has hit them hard.
Similar to how OCs Horwich collapsed after their 0-5 semi defeat to Stoke.

I don't mind Pearson these days.
He seems to have calmed down a bit from his Leicester days when he was prone to the odd meltdown moment.

I can't see that happening. SD is in a reasonably secure position at Burnley. I don't think he would want to swap that for a club that have a high turnover in managers and the possibility of relegation.

Last night was a great result. These guys have some great players-dont forget they stopped Liverpool's winning run in some style pre Lock Down, and beat United too I recall. Pearson & Shakespeare are a good British management combination

Deulofeu out and Doucoure on the bench were the main problem thank goodness
Pearson obviously thought he could win with a slightly weakened team

they were really poor when beating liverpool 3-0
Re: Watford - What's Happened to Them?
What has happened to Watford is surely what can happen to any 14 Premier League clubs. Whilst it is usual for one or two promoted clubs to return and sometimes all three, occasionally all three survive to be replaced by three clubs from 14 who have maintained their league status for 1 or more years.
If SD goes it will be us next season and even if he stays if we do not replace Lennon, Hendrick and get a third keeper unless Jensen is up to it and/or have two or three of the under 23's step up we could be one of those three. Watford and Bournemouth are in their fifth season, WHU 8th season, Brighton I think 3rd season and Southampton 8th. There are just the so called top 6 who are permanent structures since 1992 although Spurs and Arsenal not presently in the 6 presently at the top of the league

True, but every season throws up the odd freak performance / result.
Villa looked like world-beaters and we looked down and out when they came to Turf Moor.

Indeed. Everybody mentions the ‘ostrich’ incident with the reporter but his actual strangling of McArthur during a game was astonishing and I’m surprised how much it’s been brushed under the carpet.

Have you noticed how he takes 5 minutes to say what he used to in 2. He must analyse every syllable before he speaks.Woonderbah wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 10:20 amI don't mind Pearson these days.

Re: Watford - What's Happened to Them?
deeny was good last night, as were a few others. they are off the boil thats for certain though as a team. I think pearson will sort them out.
Re: Watford - What's Happened to Them?
Reading Watford's forums, the general consensus is that Deeney is immobile and past it. They were complaining that our reserve strike force was much better than their main one. They would have Vydra back in a heartbeat. General complaints were their lack of effort and commitment considering we were down to the bare bones, and had 2 days less recovery time than them. Most of them think they are going down

Sounds like a reasonable assessment of the game.Ric_C wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 12:01 pmReading Watford's forums, the general consensus is that Deeney is immobile and past it. Well done you Hornets.
They can't have Vyd back though.
