The battle for Europe
This week.
SheffU v Spurs tomorrow. SheffU win takes them above us but it’s in our hands Sunday.
Arsenal v B’mouth tomorrow. Need a miracle but then gooners away to Wolves on Sunday.
Spurs round up the weekend at home to Everton Monday. Any result possible.
It’s all falling into place.

Re: The battle for Europe
after the last two games results it is certainly adding spice to the end of season for us, which I love, makes all the games you mention more interesting for me even when we are not playing
Re: The battle for Europe
Do we really think it will benefit the club or Dyche to get into Europe again? Probably only result in even more strained relationships between manager and chairman not to mention the relationship with my wife after how much it cost me last time to get to Istanbul and Athens!

Re: The battle for Europe
Have to admit, I'd fancy our chances a bit more if we'd a few more players fit enough to play.
Another three games next week is a tough ask.
But if anyone can do it, we can.

Also 'Spuds' wins over 'Sharp ones' and the 'Toffee bindippers'
A win for us v 'Shuff Etd' and the week-end would be complete .....
Not asking for too much am I .....

As pointed out above Gooners have Norwich tomorrow, my bad.
I’m wanting Spuds to lose both and our boys to turn over blades.
7th and sod the City ban. We are in whatever.
Re: The battle for Europe
How good would it be to just pip Arsenal for a European place.

Thought this was going to be one of those brilliant political threads.
When I click on it, it's something to do with Burnley FC.
What's the board coming to?

Worst case scenario for me would be qualifying for Europe and fans not being allowed to attend any away games.

I would like to think that if we did qualify for Europe it would make it less likely that Dyche would want to leave.

And more likely to spend some money and more likely to be bought by investors.

If we get that place at Arsenal's expense there might just be another job offer for SD to consider?northeastclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 6:06 pm...if we did qualify for Europe it would make it less likely that Dyche would want to leave.

Re: The battle for Europe
Looking at the table it's hard to see us catching Man Utd and above, but 7th isn't out of reach, we're only behind Spurs on GD, although they do have the game in hand, i'd be happy with a top 10 finish, considering where we were after the Chelsea game, that'd constitute a good season, but this team just keep surprising us, and everybody else, so you just never know what they're capable of.
If we did qualify for Europe for the 2nd time in 3 seasons, that would show that it wasn't a fluke in 17/18.

It we get to Europe again with our squad of 11? 13? It will be an unbelievable achievement from the players and Dyche should be granted the freedom of Burnley ( or at least free pies for life on the turf )

Re: The battle for Europe
There’s absolutely no arguments with SD statement that the lads had come back fired up and ready to go. Forget the City match, 1-0 or 5-0 it’s still 0 points. They’ve worked ever so hard since and got their rewards.

Re: The battle for Europe
There are all sorts of possibilities depending on City's appeal, who wins the FA Cup and who qualifies for the CL. The latter includes the EL winner, which could be Wolves or Man U. Also City or Chelsea could win the CL this year.tiger76 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:16 pmLooking at the table it's hard to see us catching Man Utd and above, but 7th isn't out of reach, we're only behind Spurs on GD, although they do have the game in hand, i'd be happy with a top 10 finish, considering where we were after the Chelsea game, that'd constitute a good season, but this team just keep surprising us, and everybody else, so you just never know what they're capable of.

It could be possible to finish 8th I think and get in the EL. City have of course won the LC.
The highest finisher in the league below the CL qualifers will get straight into the group stages of the EL. The place could be lower than normal this time.
Re: The battle for Europe
The group stages are due to start at the end of October. I'll be surprised if fans are allowed to travel around Europe freely by then, might be home fans only best case scenario.

Re: The battle for Europe
See what you are getting at but the 17/18 finish was not a fluke. You don’t fluke a result after 38 games....particularly when we were getting absolutely nothing from refs etc. How many pens did we have that season (I.e Huddersfield away, shocking decision cost us 2 points along with the Arsenal shambles at the turf and Southampton when Barnes was poleaxed by the keeper....just 3 examples that cost us 5 points).
Arguably with a bit of luck and not going onto the beach for the last 5 games we would, could and should have finished top 6 and would have deserved it. It was no fluke.

Re: The battle for Europe
Most folk only want us to qualify for selfish reasons. The damage financially that this competition could cause the club could be crippling, remember last time
Re: The battle for Europe
Agreed but from the outside looking in at us. Much like Leicester's title win. They'd have been regarded as flukes because 'how dare teams like Leicester and Burnley upset the status quo'.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 8:58 amSee what you are getting at but the 17/18 finish was not a fluke. Re: The battle for Europe
I think people need to look up the meaning of the word fluke.
It means you have been lucky. I would argue the opposite for that season.

Yes, agree it's unlikely.
In a way, puts me off qualification. Europe's only fun if you can actually go to Lithuania.

Court of arbitration giving City appeal decision on July 13th. Unlucky for City, I hope.

Do we really want to have another bash at the EL this next season given the problems we have with finances and player strengths?

Re: The battle for Europe
Yes this words it better than i did, we know finishing 7th wasn't a fluke or lucky, but many in the media dismissed it as a one-season wonder, and assumed we'd revert back to a lower mid-table/relegation candidate, which last season we did, but since the turn of the year we've got on a roll once more. and we have every chance of confounding all the pundits again, TBF so have Leicester, and our successes clearly show that our respective triumphs, them winning the league, and us qualifying for Europe, weren't a one-off as many suspected.

Re: The battle for Europe
I always want us to finish as high as possible. I think we can give anyone (bar maybe City and Liverpool) a good game on our day. Yes we have a long list of injuries but surely most of them will be fit for any Europa campaign. We don’t need to fear many European teams either. We are not eighth in the premier league for no reason. Come on let’s keep being positive, otherwise it’s a bit of a dull hobby isn’t it (I know it often seems more important than that, but not really in the big scheme of things).

In the big scheme of things, my heart says get in the EL, but my head says the same as last time. It would be a very risky thing for our PL survival. We will be doing well to put a squad together that keeps us away from the bottom end next season, given the uncertainty over our budget and the alleged rift between SD and MG.

Not sure why you think that we will buy less players than many other clubs in the division. It's not just Burnley that have been affected by Covid 19.summitclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:01 pmIn the big scheme of things, my heart says get in the EL, but my head says the same as last time. We have also cleared out quite a bit of dead wood in the last few days, so that makes room for some younger, fresher faces to come in, including from the academy. At least, I hope the academy produces a couple. Not much point in having it otherwise.
Let's get in the EL and test the younger lads out.

Re: The battle for Europe
Remaining fixtures BOLD indicates home game.
Sheff Utd- Burnley WOLVES CHELSEA Leicester EVERTON Southampton
Arsenal- Wolves LEICESTER Tottenham LIVERPOOL Villa WATFORD
Tottenham- EVERTON Bournemouth ARSENAL Newcastle LEICESTER Palace
Burnley- SHEFF UTD West Ham Liverpool WOLVES Norwich BRIGHTON
Everton- Tottenham SOUTHAMPTON Wolves VILLA Sheff Utd BOURNEMOUTH
Some tasty encounters there didn't realise there was so many 6 pointers, it's wide open with those fixtures, if big if, but if we beat both Sheff Utd & Wolves we've got a great shot of European football next season, there's games that both teams can't collect 3 points, so that should mean less points needed for 7/8th place.
