Post by HunterST_BFC » Wed Jun 24, 2020 10:54 pm

Give this a watch / record.

Watch it again if you've seen it before.

A simple heads up for an hour and a half's film that is so enjoyable.

It's Footie and more. Great story.

That's it promo over - Marvellous - BBC 2 - July 1st - 9pm.

I can't stand *anything* to do with Stoke City.

Except this. It's excellent and heartwarming.

Highly recommended.

If you’ve not seen it then do - it really is Marvellous.

And I even know one of the main characters in it, his friend Malcolm.

Just a reminder that it is tonight.

If you've seen it, as I have, then it is very much worth watching again. If you haven't, I'm absolutely sure you won't be disappointed with it.

Always thought Lou Macari could’ve played himself in this. His amateur acting would’ve been forgiven because Nellos story is enough to carry him

It was a slow burner the 1st 20 minutes, but once it got into it's stride it was hilarious, the banter was believable as well, and this shows the true grass roots that every football club needs.

All the cast were marvellous (pun intended) but a special mention for Toby Jones & Gemma Jones as the main stars.

When I first saw it I didn't believe it could be true but Vince Overson was at Stoke at the time. So I spoke to him and he confirmed it as well as giving me some stories that they just couldn't have gone in the film. Totally agree with the performances from Toby Jones and Gemma Jones too.

Without giving too much away - I love the line when he went to the job centre with his mum and when asked what job he would like he said manager of Stoke City. He then said it didn't have to be Stoke but he drew the line at Port Vale.

Simply Marvellous.

Just shows what a difference a positive attitude can have on your day/life.
Great end too, with Nello asking for a lift home.

A real heart warming story when the day has been full of unsettling news and sadness (see Beddie's post today)

Had it recommended and as you’ve all said, what an utter joy. The screenwriter was Peter Bowker, who also does the scripts for the hugely enjoyable The A Word.

I've learned that the player with the silk boxers was Martin Carruthers.

One story that didn't make the cut was when they stripped him naked and then chased him across the training ground kicking balls at him. The training pitch just happened to be right next to a busy road and it ended up gridlocked as cars stopped so they could see what was going on.

Watched it with Mrs C for the first time last night - both really enjoyed it, and as a former Keele Uni student from back in the late 70s, I also enjoyed the Keele connections. Also watched a follow-up awards show where they had Baldwin and Macari on stage with the filmmaker. Mrs C thoroughly amused by the local Staffordshire expression of calling people "Duck".

Thanks for the recommendation. Watched this tonight with the other half and enjoyed it. Wouldn’t usually be my cup of tea but a heartwarming story and a very good lead performance. Only slight downside (sorry for the negative) was that some of the football gear (kits, balls etc,) seemed to reflect the postwar era. rather than the early 90’s. A minor gripe though and enjoyable nonetheless.

Duck is also used in parts of Derbyshire, first heard its use in the 60's by the grandmother of a girl I used to date and the gmother was from Matlock which I suppose is not too far from Staffs. You don't have to travel far in the UK to hear different accents and by the same token I imagine expressions

Well we are settling down for this after Wolves/Arsenal. Thanks fir the heads up on the slow start. We’ll press on through

Toby Jones is a superb actor. Son of Freddie Jones he has over 120 credits on IMDB.
My favourite is as Truman Capote in Infamous. Many of you may know him from Tinker, Tailor.... or Anthropoid.

Edit. We both enjoyed all of that. Grand way to spend an evening.
