Double signing four years ago today
We’d just won promotion and signed a couple of players from a club relegated to League One

Nick Pope put on his social media
"I arrived at Burnley 4 years ago in a buy 1, get 1 free deal with Johan Berg Gudmundsson"

Even with the JBG injuries they have proved to be good business.

I remember 4 years ago we were linked with two young 'keepers to come in and play understudy to Tom Heaton. One was Nick Pope, the other was Daniel Bentley from Southend.
Back then I was disappointed it was Pope we ended up with as I'd heard good things about Bentley but very little about Pope. I think we probably got the right one in the end.

Re: Double signing four years ago today
Bentley went to Brentford and then moved on to Bristol City last summer.
All I knew about the one we had signed was the fact that I'd spent 45 minutes stood behind him in the last match of the season. And I also recall suggesting it was good the game being on a Saturday rather than a Sunday with them having a Pope in goal.
Whatever anyone saw in him at the time, and he hadn't played that many games at league level, it was an astute piece of business.

Maybe if Bentley had signed instead, with coaching staff at Burnley, he might’ve been as highly regarded as Pope...

You can't coach a pudding. Nick is a natural how he reads the game and commands his box, he also has the perfect hight and build.

JBG maintaining a decent fitness level will be like having a new signing. Hope he stays injury free for next season. Good player, very tidy and energetic.

Nick Pope looked a good keeper in goal for Charlton in that last game of the season. There were a couple of occasions that I thought he would make it hard for the clarets to get the win. I was pleased when I heard we'd signed him.

My thought too, at the time. He did look to fill his goal and keep us out.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 6:36 pmNick Pope looked a good keeper in goal for Charlton in that last game of the season. He was on the beach in the preseason friendly at Rangers if memory serves me right. I was really hoping he would come on. It would have been comedy watching the Rangers fans as his name was announced.Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:28 pmWe've also managed to see the Pope wearing orange

Just goes to show. We certainly know how to pick up some gems, especially keepers; from lower divisions. I bet there were more than a few raised eyebrows at Heaton's signing from Bristol City at the time too.

I think Heaton has just won their player of the year after conceding the most goal in the division.

More than a few eyebrows, Dyche himself always says there was stick coming his way when he signed Heaton.

Garlick told me there was lots of people saying 'who' when he was negotiating the Pope deal. I think he was very proud of that one.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 10:04 amMore than a few eyebrows, Dyche himself always says there was stick coming his way when he signed Heaton.
