John Cofie

Post by Father Jack » Fri Jul 24, 2020 7:17 am

Interesting article on the Athletic about his time with Burnley and what came after.

He was only a name on the last messageboard for me but I remember a lot of excitement about him. Can anyone add their own stories about watching him play for the youth teams?

Athletic seem to put out some really good stuff, I’d like to subscribe but I can’t justify paying for the occasional article I’m interested in.

Now this is where I feel rotten, can anyone copy and paste it on here?

These are the Burnley articles posted since January.
Personally think it’s great value given the lack of decent regular Burnley coverage in the media. And then I often find interesting things to read unrelated to Burnley.
Oliver Kay, Daniel Taylor, Andy Mitten, Jack Laing. In my opinion they’ve got the best collection of football journalists in one place.
Still running a 40% off annual subscription offer too...
Think I paid about £35 for the year on this offer.

Are you on commission Father Jack?
I know Cofie went to United as a youngster and failed to make it there and was loaned out to Sheff United but they didn't take him on and he ended up mainly in non league.
Googled him and according to Wiki played less than 80 games since he left us although had 3 games with England 17's and since Jan 2020 been playing in the Philippines and is now 27.
Did moving to United ruin him or is this where he was destined to be? I suppose if you are at a club with loads of youngsters you may become lost and therefore not prosper there or after leaving. Don't think we have taken on many Man U rejects directly from them who have done well with us-I do not count Chris Eagles as he commanded quite a fee. Dwight stands, out any others?

I saw him score at least 3 goals for Burnley U14s/U15s in a game at Padiham. He looked older than the other players.

Hah no. I’m not on commission. But I do enjoy the articles. And I suspected a lot of people wouldn’t know how much is written about Burnley (albeit it’s the same for every prem team).

Interesting bits from the article
That we pushed him to go to Utd, but got £1m for him instead of £250k offered by Liverpool.
That he was flying back and forth to Germany each week.
That we had a coaching programme in Germany. Expect this didn’t survive the Jason Blake era, if it even got that far?
That Cofie had injuries at Utd which hampered his development and he wished he’d stayed at Burnley. Ifs, buts and maybes

I remember a few years back at a clarets mad golf day to raise money for youth development. It was at Rishton Golf club and Pashlet and Farrel and Das Bentley we’re there. I had a really good chat with Terry Pashley and talked about Cofie. He said they were convinced he was a massive talent and star in the making, “as good as Rooney”.
Not sure why he didn’t develop as hoped. But yes, he should have stayed at Burnley! Think there may have been parent pressure when the lure of Man Utd came along!

Probably a bit of destiny and a bit of being in a much bigger pond.

If you are going to make it at United you not only need the talent, but also the dedication, application, mentality, worth ethic etc. Not saying he didn't have any of that. But only the elite will make it.

Even at Burnley to be fair. I know when Jay was coming through the ranks other young players scored more than him or ability wise weren't much different. But as is the case now, his attitude and work ethic was apparently streets ahead of everyone in the team.

I imagine if he was flying to Germany every week and had a disrupted schedule this wont have helped.

Look at Pogba and Balotelli. Both have the footballing talent of Ronaldo. As did Ravel Morrison apparently. But neither have anywhere near the attitude of Ronaldo.

Fair enough Pogba has had a decent career and won the world cup also. But he is an enigma. He should have been the best in his position in the world. Hes not even the best in his position an underperforming United!

Balotelli is about to sign for Lake Como FC - at 29!

Re the Athletic, that have had some good trials and offers on during the lockdown. I bailed at paying the £6.99 a month they originally wanted, but when they dropped it to £30 for a year subscription I that I could justify that.

There is some interesting stuff on there (although I find some of it is a bit geeky) and they have a dedicated Burnley correspondent (although he is a Scouser!).

Watched him at Utd in the under 16s quite a few times at Carrington, and was shocked at how poor he looked after the rave reviews, he looked like Bambi on ice.

There's a book by Malcolm Gladwell called Outliers. Part of it discusses the success of those who go to the "best schools". When a kid has been top of his class and then goes to a better school where all the kids are brighter and he suddenly finds himself in the bottom half he can feel like a failure.

They found that kids who went to lesser schools but were the big fish in a small pond had better careers than those who struggled at the best schools, despite better tutoring, a better cv and often better final exam results.

This is part of the reason why the big American universities give sports scholarships and scholarships to poor kids who haven't necessarily got the grades, they are there to fill the bottom half of the class so that the elite students still feel elite.

Maybe John Cofie would have been better off being the next Rooney at Burnley than being one of many at United.

I agree with what you say apart from Paul Pogba.

He’s the best CM in the country. He’s never been or wants to be this central figure, the main man. He never has been. For France he excels because the attention in on Griezmann/Mbappe. Pirlo etc had the attention at Juventus.

Theres an interesting psychology to this and I listened to something where Jordan Peterson was talking about something similar. And it makes sense. Essentially you compare yourselves to your peers. You could be fantastically talented. The example he used was a guy called Adeo Dessi. Hugely successful entrepreneur. But he felt like a failure. Because he was comparing his success to that of his roommate at uni. That roomate was Elon Musk

No doubt he is brilliant. But he went missing - literally, for huge portions of his career at United.

Appreciate different characters want a different role. And his style can be inferred as disinterested. But I believe Pogba with the right attitude would have been unstoppable

Liverpool's behaviour throughout John Cofie's time at Burnley was pretty bad. It was their behaviour that meant Burnley were insistent they would not sell him to them. They could have offered double what Man Utd offered, and I remain convinced the club wouldn't have entertained it.

If you like The Athletic then there is a podcast on YouTube named Tifo, who work in association with The Athletic and their journalists and cover all sorts of questions and stories within the game which is a good listen.

So struggling at a lesser school would explain a lot about me!

Andy Jones is busy ....
He also did a good write-up when he travelled on the Accy Clarets coach to Chelsea.

for a lad who finished university last summer he has given it his all this year, and earned the respect of his fellow journo's at the Athletic - which given the quality that is there is some achievement - it was a brave appointment, but one that has been well repaid

I subscribe to the Athletic but have never really paid much attention to Andy Jones beyond knowing he's the guy who covers Burnley, I honestly thought he was a seasoned reporter.

Anything but seasoned. Young lad in his first job after graduating last summer. I’ve done a few things with him this season and he did a fantastic piece on Clarets for Foodbanks.

A decent read that. I enjoy the various retrospectives in the Athletic. Far more interesting than the stream of transfer/manager gossip in most of the papers.

Liverpool's behaviour throughout John Cofie's time at Burnley was pretty bad. It was their behaviour that meant Burnley were insistent they would not sell him to them. They could have offered double what Man Utd offered, and I remain convinced the club wouldn't have entertained it.
Absolutely spot on. I understand his father was given a box the season prior to his move as a sweetener. My understanding is that he could have gone to any club in the works but it was never going to be a Liverpool as Burnley felt their hand was being forced and they didn’t like it

suspect it also played into the clubs approach to the Danny Ings stand off, even though that was much later - we were strong in our position against them

It’s this sort of topic and thread that’s makes this site interesting and relevant and informative rather that constant political squabbling!!!

I think calling it a coaching centre in Germany might be over egging it’s a bit. The club used to, from
Memory, take one of the centre of excellence teams in tour and play sides. John Cofie was in a side we played against, which at the time was a really good side ( Think it might have been Alex-Ray Harvey, Scorer year) and he apparently stood out a mile.

I don’t think he flew back to Germany every week, think that was just the start before he moved into the private school. He played most weekends don’t forget.

Believe Liverpool were more linked with the god parent in Warrington than his dad to be honest.

I thought it was a team from the community that were over there when we first saw him but he was definitely based in Clitheroe almost from the start and we were asked if we could help fund it.

Can't see that it's already been posted, but there's a piece in today's Clitheroe Advertiser saying he's working at Moorland School (the one he attended whilst with BFC).

I agree with dandeclaret, that was my understanding on what went on. I understood the lad wanted to stay but his step dad was forcing the move. I think I remember it was moorlands school he went to.
I was lucky to see him play on several occasions. Even as scouts we didn’t know when he would be in the country and playing, so it was pot luck if he was there or not.
My best story was popping down to watch the under15’s one Sunday. John was playing but was an under 14. We were playing Preston. He scored several goals and just looked so far ahead of everyone else on the field. As I was walking off I overheard a bloke in Preston kit complaining that playing a lad a year down to give him a game was so unfair on the other lads. I politely informed him he was playing a year up. I remembered he turned round and watched John for a minute and looked at me and said “your not joking either are you” I replied I was not joking. He then said in his 30 years of watching youth football he had never seen a lad so good for his age.

What happened to him I have no idea. I did follow what went on at Utd and I know he had a bad back injury. But no idea if that’s what affected him.

I remember reading on the old Teletext off TV we'd got a million quid for a young lad not out of school.
Thought it bloody amazing!

Just bumped into John tonight in Clitheroe. He said it wasn’t his decision and he regretted the day he left us. Don’t feel too sorry for him he had the most stunning blonde in tow. Life doesn’t seem to be treating him that badly!

The Club used to do pre season coaching around some of the Army Garrison areas not sure if they did it in other areas as well. It was down moenchen gladbach I think where he was spotted.
