Harsh if true reward for success is the sack
Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Would be a good appointment. He was in the running before and has done well in Portugal since.

Hasnt he recently been sacked by Benfica after the worst run of results in their history ?

Another club where SD cant go if true. As bad a timing as Nigel Perasons sacking. However with so much money in the PL it shows how pro-active decisions can be

Sounds perfect, foreign name etc.
Spent time as assist manager/coach at a few English clubs.
Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Where you got info from CT?
Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Absolutely charming. Dean Smith, a lifelong Villa fan, takes them from mediocrity in the Championship back into the Premier League and keeps them there. They then pot him in favour of some inexperienced Portuguese bloke who was sacked from his previous role. Dean Smith's father also passed away in difficult circumstances while he was battling away trying to keep his team up.

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Potential suitors for SD just get thinner and thinner.
In a selfless way, I feel for him. He's done an outstanding job but who would want him? It's that tier above us that appear to have shunned him in the past: Everton, Villa, Palace types.
It's not something I like. 'Our' Premier League is anything but 'ours'. It is now dominated by foreign owners, managers and players. It's become a mechanism to sell Sky subscriptions and that is who it primarily serves. The England football team and grassroots certainly don't appear to be the primary recipients of its success. Another argument for another thread on a different day.

Don't forget Villa have a Director of Football - he recruited the players not Smith, no doubt he made the decision on the manager - it is his job

Clubs with ideas above their station, always go for the fancy sounding names as managers! It’s seems a Fred Smith, Tom brown or a Bill Jones, isn’t exotic enough

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Another Jorge Mendes job by the looks of it. That lad makes a very tidy sum for basically ringing CEO’s up and peddling his mates wares.
It stinks though. Smith has got them up, kept them up (yes, with a lot of luck and having spent a TON) all whilst dealing with his Dad sadly dying in the last couple of months. It shows the type of scruples that club has. I hope it goes disastrously wrong for them and there’s every chance it will do.

Excelent news if true. Not about Smith, of course, but about Villa not wanting Sean Dyche.
As long as all the teams that are - or think they are - "bigger" or "better" than Burnley carry on wanting foreigners to manage them, then there won't be many clubs left with the clout to tempt him away.

Absolute rubbish. Dean will be manager next season and there should be no debate now.

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
The big difference between next season and this is that Dean Smith may be in charge but if Villa are in the bottom three after six matches or so then they will almost certainly pull the trigger.
He probably knows that anytime spent in the relegation places will mean the end for him. They will expect much better

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Scraping survival on the last day of the season is not what the backers were looking for when they spunked £100m plus in last year’s closed season. However, if Grealish goes, next season’s task is made harder, and I doubt that will be happy to spunk another shitload of cash letting a new manager try a new way forward.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 9:52 pmAbsolutely charming. The postman has been sacked for going large, they want SD as a replacement.

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Kept them up with more luck than judgement. They were on a decline, so IMO right thing to do.
No point leaving it until it's too late again and another 150m has been spent.
I think them being pro active rather than reactive will pay them back.

Let’s hope he stays to finish 19 points behind us again.....
Tbh he was very annoying most of the season with his comments after games. You would have thought his team were like the Real Madrid of Puskas and Di Stefano given his comments from most of the games he didn’t win. Particularly embarrassing after our 2 - 2 draw.

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
It’s a well know fact (probably) that 99% of all football rumours come from the “Chinese whispers” methodology of passing on information to others - which I know will probably come as a surprise to many in these days of modern technology.
So the latest one I have heard is a quote from Mr Garlick who has said “ I have BACKED Sean Dyche and I say this with no MALICE”
Sssshhh pass it on....

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
Doesn’t surprise me with the cut throat nature of football management, I think I read once Ian Holloway saying when he gets appointed he doesn’t even properly unpack as he knows he’ll be moving on again shortly.

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
If this is the board saying they're backing the manager then that's not good - managers often seem to leave by 'mutual consent' not long after.burnmark wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 12:04 pmRob Dorsett reporting that Smith’s job is ‘100% secure.’

Re: Dean Smith to go at Villa
I’ll never understand why managers don’t have the final say on recruitment at some clubs. Pretty sure it’s the same thing at Everton, 1 business person forcing new recruits onto a football manager. The Villa recruitment was shocking too but if relegated that would’ve been laid upon the door of Smith by everyone. “Smith spent £130M and still got relegated”.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 9:55 pmDon't forget Villa have a Director of Football - he recruited the players not Smith, no doubt he made the decision on the manager - it is his job

Quite right too in my opinion. The only good buy he made was Tom Heaton.

So long as it's not Sean Dyche i'm pretty relaxed about who they appoint, let's deal with our own house, and leave the rest to sort their affairs out as they see fit.dougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 10:05 pmNot fussed who manages Villa so long as they finish below us.
