Norwich City
Quick start to the window for them - they have signed about 4 players in the last few days!
Preparing for a small exodus?

Sounds like a club with long term plans.

Re: Norwich City
Hope that explains our lack of activity - waiting for Norwich to pick up replacements for Buendia and Cantwell.

Maybe if they had better long term plans they wouldn’t keep getting relegated.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 1:41 pmSounds like a club with long term plans.

Re: Norwich City
I'm not privy to their long term plans but seemed to remember people saying they would take the money and run at the end of the season, pay off their debts and come back down before the wage bill got too high.
Which it does very quickly.
Relegation for us now would hit us far harder.

Re: Norwich City
They will be going down a lot better off financially than they went up given the lack of transfer activity in their last two windows.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 5:17 pmI'm not privy to their long term plans but seemed to remember people saying they would take the money and run at the end of the season, pay off their debts and come back down before the wage bill got too high.

Yeah, it's probably the only way to keep financially secure. You can keep the wage bill low by yo-yoing.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 5:35 pmThey will be going down a lot better off financially than they went up given the lack of transfer activity in their last two windows.
3 years in the prem and you will have around a hundred million wage bill.
It's tough for us small clubs.

Re: Norwich City
Fairly sure we'd have relegation clauses, especially after watching clubs like Sunderland, Wolves etc get relegated without having those sorts of clauses.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 5:17 pmI'm not privy to their long term plans but seemed to remember people saying they would take the money and run at the end of the season, pay off their debts and come back down before the wage bill got too high.

I'm not sure.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 6:34 pmFairly sure we'd have relegation clauses, especially after watching clubs like Sunderland, Wolves etc get relegated without having those sorts of clauses.
But I would think most premier league players would get reduced to our wage level if they had a relegation clause?
I think our safety net is no bonuses will be paid out which makes a big chunk of the wage bill up.
Re: Norwich City
Why would a player agree to a relegation clause? Given that there’s normally a number of clubs interested when a player becomes available surely the player chooses the most secure and lucrative contract.

Re: Norwich City
Would imagine all of ours have a right to leave if we get relegated but also will be subject to reduced basic. Incentives/bonus will definitely be reduced so their earning potential massively diminishes here anyway.

Re: Norwich City
Probably only 7-8 clubs who can pretty much guarantee that they won't get relegated.
Any other club with sense will insist on a relegation clause.
Wolves didn't and were paying Jamie O'Hara £40k a week in league 1, same with Sunderland and Rodwell but he was one closer to £70k a week.
Our club is far better ran and our bonus structure is the key.

This relegation clause intrigues me. I suspect they are as common as hens teeth
As said above, why would any player agree to it?

Re: Norwich City
Why would any but a select few clubs not insist on them is probably the question you should be asking.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:31 pmThis relegation clause intrigues me. I suspect they are as common as hens teeth

There's talk of a wage cap in the championship and it could well happen due to Covid etc.
Relegation clauses should be mandatory for every league if they want to stop more scenarios like Bolton, Leeds, Sunderland etc so relegated clubs can straight away fit into any wage cap for the league below.
If a player doesn't agree to one then a club won't sign him.
If that club is the only one giving a player a chance to step up a league then they hold the upper hand.

Re: Norwich City
They can insist on a relegation clause as much as they want. But it is a free market and those players who won’t accept a relegation clause will just sign for Bolton, Leeds, Sunderland plus Villa and others who will pay thru the noseGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:36 pmWhy would any but a select few clubs not insist on them is probably the question you should be asking.

If that's the case then they're not the right players for us quite simply.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:42 pmThey can insist on a relegation clause as much as they want. We have a very good bonus structure, our players know that and its one of those things that keeps them motivated.
Re: Norwich City
Isn’t the average wage in the Championship something like £16k a week? Good luck trying to enforce a salary cap or relegation clauses in that bonkers division. I
Isn’t Mitrovic on about £80k a week at Fulham?
Would people prefer it if footballers were paid less so owners make more money? There’s not many industries out there that are as meritocratic as football.

Re: Norwich City
But at any moment they can sell him for £25m+ and recoup the outlay and cut his wages off the overall wage bill.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 12:09 amMitrovic is on 60k a week.............insane number in the Championship
Re: Norwich City
Because not every player is in massive demand. If Burnley want to sign John Smith and off him £25k per week but halved if we go down, and next best offer is £6k per week, he would probably take it I reckon.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:31 pmThis relegation clause intrigues me. Shelvey at Newcastle was rumoured to be on £70k, as was Rodwell at Sunderland and he wasn't even playing.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 12:09 amMitrovic is on 60k a week.............insane number in the Championship

Re: Norwich City
I heard recently that Steven Fletcher was on £60k per week at Sheffield Wednesday, madness personified.
