England vs Ireland 3rd ODI (Southampton)

Post by tiger76 » Tue Aug 04, 2020 2:33 pm

England batting first, and they are in some trouble, Roy & Bairstow gone early, Vince has a start, and Morgan has promoted himself to 4 to settle the innings down.

39-2 after 7 overs, you'd imagine anything around 250 will be enough for England, but they'll be hoping for 300+.

Guess who just got out in a very James Vince fashion?

Surely the end of the road now for him in international cricket?

That's got to be it for Vince, with all due respect to Ireland they aren't a top class bowling attack, and if he can't score runs against this attack, then he's not up to being an international cricketer.

Who comes in for him is a harder question to answer, but i guess Root and Stokes will return to the fold, and England will play.

Roy
Bairstow
Root
Stokes
Morgan

As a top 5 against the Aussies, that looks a powerful top order to me, and it contains a wealth of experience.

Billings has secured his place for the long term with his batting in this series, and there's plenty of options in the all rounders.

Banton is still learning his trade and he'll be around the England set-up for many years to come.

Willey and both Curran brothers will be in the mix, questions must be growing over Moeen's future as well, he's struggled with bat and ball in this series.

Shame about Reece Topley's injury after he waited so long to return to this England side.

You have forgotten Buttler at 6.

Very hard team to get into at full strength.

Yes forgot about Jos, it is a hard team to get into at full strength, and that's why the likes of Banton, Billings, Moeen and Vince had to lay down a marker in these games. I'd say Banton and Billings have shown enough to keep themselves in the selector's thoughts, but Moeen and Vince might struggle to retain their places.

50 for Morgan in no time, badly needed by England to right the ship after that shaky start, that's the difference in the England side these days the strength in depth right down the order is palpable. And that's one of the reasons they are world champions.

The Irish wouldn't be a bad side if Morgan played for them instead.

50 for Banton, he's showing today why England have invested so much in him. He's definitely gone well up the pecking order after this innings, and it's not a bad thing to do it in the company of your captain.

100 for Morgan off just 78 balls, this pair have taken the game away from Ireland in short shrift, after that early clatter of wickets.

England collapsing again 203-6 Morgan, Banton and Moeen gone in a flash. And there's still acres of time left, England need to settle down for a few overs and build a partnership there's still 20 overs remaining.

England finish on 328. A big score considering early failings and Ireland bowling well.

328 should be plenty, Ireland did bowl well and that seems to be their strength, their batting has let them down in this series.

Important knocks from T Curran & Willey again to get England up to over 300, there's still plenty of question marks over the batting despite that hefty total, Moeen looks out of nick, and he might have been better getting some time in the middle at a county game, but that's easy to say with hindsight.

Morgan won't field, so Moeen takes the reins, and Liam Livingstone is a sub fielder.

Decent effort by Ireland so far 55-1 after the powerplay, another wicket for Willey, he's got a good chance of being England's man of the series at this rate, Campher's nailed on to be Ireland man of the series.

I'd still give it to Campher, he's contributed with bat and ball in every innings, Stirling has got to 50 mind you, Ireland are finally showing that they can compete, and even though the series has gone, they could pick up the 10 points on offer towards WC qualification.

Campher for me too in all seriousness
Not sure which county he plays for because never heard of him before but looks a very good all rounder

I'm not sure any of the Ireland players have got counties ATM, i think due to their test status now that they class as overseas players, hence why Murtagh has opted to retire from international cricket and devote himself to Middlesex. I can definitely see him attracting interest from the IPL amongst others once the schedule settles back to normal again.

Never knew that about Ireland being overseas status silly really given they obviously are not test quality yet and need to blood young players

England need wickets PDQ to stay in this game, this could be another famous Ireland run chase against England.

Willy showing why he was rightly banished from the world cup squad. Alright bowling the first 5 overs but then he becomes cannon fodder

He was playing South Africa U19s last year (I think). Don’t think he has come through the English county system.

Deserved win for Ireland, and it might give them hope that they can compete at this level, in the first 2 games they never looked like they believed in themselves, but tonight they judged that chase to perfection, England were poor with the ball though, and this should serve as a wake up call if any complacency was creeping in.

Well played Ireland. Some superb batting there, and with a bit more of the rub of the green they could have won the series.

From England’s point of view this series has been a nightmare. We’ve tried to make out that we have strength in depth yet at some point in every game we’ve been exposed by a hard working Ireland side who , at a guess, would be a mid to low level county standard.

Negatives - Vince, must be finished now. Bowlers (Rashid apart) all looked like they’d be taken apart by a strong international side.

Positives - only if you’re Alex Hales. Billings took his chance.

Well played Ireland, deserved to win.
England's bowling and fielding was very poor, 2nd string bowlers were just that. One seamer short, Moeen is half the cricketer he was and it's good night to James Vince.
