It could also be us not willing to pay the fee, it costs you more in the long run, especially when you end up with a Pope or Tarkowski worth 50m + each.
And it can cost you less if the player is a flop.
I think with Brentford it's much more likely that they wanted the higher sell-on clause and wouldn't accept less, as they've done it with other players.

Well that's when players appreciate. If we'd paid extra for Hendrick, Brady, Gibson, etc to avoid a sell-on then it wouldn't be quite as good. Sell-ons are sometimes time-limited as well (length of first contract is reasonably common).
It's swings and roundabouts as to whether it works better or not plus some clubs push hard for them as part of their model (I think Brentford are one as they sell a fair few players who are fairly young and hopefully have another step on their career ladder).

You can't argue with Brentford's business model as a small club spotting, developing and selling players.
They'll be the envy of many.

I think it’s more the fact the selling club can’t really turn down the money but know they have an absolute gem so fight for everything, like a game of poker, at the same time we aren’t sure the player is worth the huge fee

If I was Barcelona I'd just cut out the middle man and go for his replacement

But it doesn’t as we have an asset that cost a couple of million who is now worth close to £50m and played the biggest part in keeping us in the £100m a year league. While also playing a part in helping our £2m keeper be worth £50m too.

I think Tarks & Pope would be making a mistake if they left us,kinda like Michael Keane's career has gone backwards i think theirs would also go the same way our defence is a
collective with out each other they are nothing.

I wouldn’t say Keane has gone backwards. He’s now playing more premier league games and more england games.
He might not have hit the heights we expected. But he is one of the better players at Everton and is a regular England player now.

Related to this topic there was an interesting snippet in the Athletic that Brentford bought out Oldham's sell-on fee for Tarkowski for £200k.
