That is sad news as far as England are concerned, however, I hope that it is not also sad news for Stokes ----it sounds ominous.

Bad news, but cricket is a team game: this gives an opportunity for others to shine.

Re: Stokes ruled out of last two tests v Pakistan
Crawley surely has to return then to strengthen the batting, and allowing Root to drop back to 4, i can see the seamers being rotated as well, Broad will play and probably Woakes, but the others could be changed up, Sam Curran and Wood if fit are decent options, or they could even go with 2 frontline spinners, the talk seems to be that Southampton will offer more turn, so that could be an option, or even the skip to bowl a few overs if needed to give the quicks a break.
Without prying that doesn't sound good if Ben's had to fly out at short notice, hope all's well with his family.

My first thought was his dad. Wasn't he taken ill not too long ago?Ashingtonclaret46 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 2:00 pmThat is sad news as far as England are concerned, however, I hope that it is not also sad news for Stokes ----it sounds ominous.

Rather than speculate, as I've done, maybe we should take note of the following:
The England and Wales Cricket Board, along with the Stokes family, requests that all media respects the family's privacy at this time.

He will have to quarantine for 14 days when he arrives in the country.

Yes let them change the rules for Ben Stokes while everyone else has to abide to them ,sounds fairnil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 8:45 pmIf it's a serious enough matter for him to fly thousands of miles on a family matter, then hopefully there will be some exemptions which allow him to do whatever he needs to do.

Re: Stokes ruled out of last two tests v Pakistan
They wouldn't be changing the rules for Ben Stokes, (nor should they).
Hopefully the current NZ rules allow exemptions to quarantine in certain extreme circumstances, and one would assume that the circumstances are pretty extreme for him to suddenly take this big decision and make such a long journey.
(I would imagine that everyone else reading my previous post fully understood what I said, but I don't mind you giving me the "eyes roll" emoji, since you clearly didn't, or chose not to).
Anyway, along with everyone else, (except, it would appear, you), I hope that things work out for him and his family when he gets there.

Re: Stokes ruled out of last two tests v Pakistan
Unfortunately they won’t (and shouldn’t) do. If they made an exception for him then they would face a backlash of people asking why they also can’t do that. The bottom line is he’ll prob ignore the quarantine and do as he likes like most people have done but the difference for him is he’s in the public eye and the press will be desperate to photograph him withIn 2 weeks to vilify him in the papersnil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 11:21 pmThey wouldn't be changing the rules for Ben Stokes, (nor should they).

There are no exemptions for quarantine in NZ, he'll be transferred to a quarantine facility on arrival where he will stay for 14 days, being tested twice for covid during that period, before he will be allowed to visit any family.

Re: Stokes ruled out of last two tests v Pakistan
That's not correct. There is a specific page on the NZ Govt / Covid pages about applying for exemption.
I do not wish to speculate on why Stokes has had to go back, but looking at the very specific guidance / rules, I would imagine that there could well be a couple of categories that he would come under.
It also says that you would be best advised to check and apply in advance. Given his decision to go, the distance etc. etc., I would be quite surprised if an application hasn't already been submitted. He will either qualify or not. I've never suggested that they should make an "exception" for him. I've said he MAY qualify for "exemption". Two very different words.

As I just posted above: No one's suggesting they make an "exception" for him, but under NZ rules he may (MAY) qualify for an "exemption".Red Fox Rocks Socks wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 8:02 amUnfortunately they won’t (and shouldn’t) do. So if a member of his family is ill , you are quite happy for Stokes to travel across the world and visit potentially passing on the virusnil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 11:21 pmThey wouldn't be changing the rules for Ben Stokes, (nor should they).

And rightly so , some people still haven’t a clue how this virus spreads

Perhaps just heed the above advice.

Have you not been keeping up with the fact he's been in a Covid free bubble, regularly tested for the past six weeks or more?

No, just first class, socially distanced, very safe, chances of him catching, and passing on anything, is next to nil. A risk worth taking.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 7:44 pmAs pointed out above he’s unlikely to be flying over there in a private jet.

I see what you did there, however you’re wrong. Stokes has had absolutely nothing to do with governmental policy regarding Covid-19, the other individual I know you’re referring to did.

As has been pointed out his personal circumstances are none of our business, but I think we all understand that there are different degrees of "illness" and NZ is a compassionate and humane society.

Reported today that Ben's father was diagnosed with brain cancer in January when he was in South Africa.

I remembered the reports of his dad being taken ill in South Africa so I assumed that it could be the reason for him going back to New Zealand.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 8:04 pmReported today that Ben's father was diagnosed with brain cancer in January when he was in South Africa.
