I was in Melborne (2002)
when he was called up in Ozland.
He had been at Greg Marsh's academy in Adelaide and was called to play in his 1st odi.
The rest is now history.
Nelson GC have recently welcomed him to be n honorary member.
Neil Hawke also was granted this privilege.

Horrible news to try and deal with on a Monday, grown men like myself shouldn’t have sporting hero’s anymore but Jimmy certainly is. He was sat at the bar at Burnley cc 3-4 years ago and I was like a kid In a candy shop just being stood next to him.

What a career, hope he plays in the lancs league for a year or two ;)

A really class act is Jimmy.A brilliant cricketer and very fitting if his last test was at Old Trafford.

If it is a retirement from international cricket I was wondering if he’d play for Lancs for a while like Cook has done at Essex.
Unless it’s another injury that’s made his mind up.

I’ve heard he’s signing for Clitheroe as an amateur :)

I am not a huge cricket fan but understand how much of an icon Jimmy is.

I used to write articles for Yahoo on Burnley, and the guy who ran it offered me a ticket in the box for the Arsenal home game (I think it was the year of the offside handball not a corner equaliser) but I had to decline as I was abroad at the time... What a missed opportunity!

Well done Jimmy, done Burnley proud.

Will be such a shame if he falls short of 600 test wickets but what a career he’s had. I’ve said it so often but surely our town’s greatest ever sportsman.

I saw him make his Lancashire League debut for Burnley and almost immediately told people that I though he could become a good player. By that I meant maybe the potential to be an outstanding league player not to become one of the greatest international bowlers in my lifetime.

Unless another injury has come up I would have hoped he’d have got to at least 600 wickets. He’s bowled well at good pace for these games and hasn’t got a huge amount of wickets due to conditions.

..... and dropped catches! (Hold onto the first one, and often the new batter offers a 2nd one or get out another way)

On BBC Agnew offers a critical assessment of Jimmy and his bowling in the last test.

Good stuff, I’d hoped he’d have a few more home series in him yet.

We do have some good depth to our bowling these days though

If possible we should try and get him to 600 but I would be surprised if he toured India and next year he will be 39 so IMO it really is now or never. Are there two more tests here? If so can he get 5 wickets/test?
Broad is 4 years his junior and could well pass 600 himself before he retires

Good news - he's still with us, and he's still going to be getting test wickets.
