Thinking about it, aren't Newcastle about to lose a midfielder, Longstaff?

That sums him up perfectly - he will be warming their bench if he goes there that's for sure.Bfcboyo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:50 pmHe ran around a lot , provided great defensive cover and for every interception and tackle he would be easily dispossessed or dink the ball to the opposition. The ones slating him will be the same ones slating the club for not keeping him if he happened to play well against us and it resulted in a defeat.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:42 pmSo you think a player who has been a regular in a Premier League team for four years would be at his level in the Championship?

Given that Burnley are (a fair bit) better than Newcastle and Jeff Hendrick was a regular at Burnley, I'm not sure why some posters are absolutely certain Hendrick couldn't get in the Newcastle side.

Probably because Hendrick has been the player targeted since Brady suffered his injury.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 2:13 pmGiven that Burnley are (a fair bit) better than Newcastle and Jeff Hendrick was a regular at Burnley, I'm not sure why some posters are absolutely certain Hendrick couldn't get in the Newcastle side.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Supporters posted negative stuff about Hendrick because he was the poorest player of the regular starters and they believed there were better players out there.
We haven’t seen much of Brownhill up until now. But to me he looks an upgrade in every area of Hendricks game- and JB is also playing out of position.

Just goes to show that what some football supporters think they're seeing and what is actually happening are often completely different things.Claretmatt4 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:58 pmInteresting stats until I got to aerial duels where it said he'd won about 97...! Re: Hendrick set to leave
Not at all convinced with Brownhill in right midfield nor him being an upgrade on Hendrick in that position. However, considering Brownhill wasn't brought in to replace Hendrick. It's a moot point.Winstonswhite wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 2:39 pmSupporters posted negative stuff about Hendrick because he was the poorest player of the regular starters and they believed there were better players out there.

Brownhill is a different type of player and wouldn't have been surprised if Dyche was toying with playing Brownhill and Hendrick together in midfield, possibly a midfield 3. Had Hendrick stayed.
I think Hendrick got the scapegoat tag far too easily and he did a lot of the unseen, dirty work that often goes unnoticed.
I just don't think he's going to benefit from playing in a Newcastle team who have less possession than us. So it's a weird move for me from that perspective.
Re: Hendrick set to leave
I’d be interested to see the various stats, referred to on the stats thread, for Hendrick. I’ve never been his biggest fan and I can see why he’s not unanimously a fans favourite.
He was though, a more than useful squad member able to fill in for various positions. We often looked a better team with him in it, even if Hendrick himself didn’t always stand out.
Would I have wanted him to stay as a first choice? No. Would I have wanted him to stay as a valued member of the first team squad? Yes.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Always find it strange the negative views on JH, if Defour had scored those goals against Brighton, Bournmouth, Chelsea and Everton x 2 he would have had a statue erected outside Turf Moor. Jeff was a very decent player for us, and scored some absolute worldies...has to mean something surely.
Re: Hendrick set to leave
What a strange comment, and probably couldn't be further from the truth.
I'm sure we will have a post every other week on how he does at his new club, so we will see exactly what we have lost, what his new club has gained and see just how well or not Jeff does.
To be honest it's old news now, he's no longer our player, so wouldn't mind him having a couple of seasons worth of poor to average games, that will be in mine and Burnley's best interests.

Tony, he was Dyches third choice right midfield at the start of this season behind JBG and Lennon until they got injured.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Just trying to justify criticism of him. He was a Burnley player for 140 Premier League games and started 107 of them. And in the other 33 he came on as a sub 15 times.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 5:26 pmI'm trying to work out if you thought that comment through or you're on a wind up..
Re: Hendrick set to leave
Hendrick is the sort of reserve that clubs need. He would have seldom played if everyone had been fit, but for much of his career was first reserve for all of Cork, Westwood and Gudmondsson - and of course one of those players needed a lot of covering for!

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Was he? As per my previous posts, the number of games he played for us would suggest he was some way from being third choice anything.Winstonswhite wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:27 pmTony, he was Dyches third choice right midfield at the start of this season behind JBG and Lennon until they got injured.
Re: Hendrick set to leave
Given a preferred choice, Dyche would never have played him right midfield I am sure. The fact he did a decent job there is testament to how professional he was.Winstonswhite wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 4:27 pmTony, he was Dyches third choice right midfield at the start of this season behind JBG and Lennon until they got injured.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
That's my point though. He's hardly moving to a team who are allowing him to express his repertoire. If it was a move designed by desire to play in a team that allow that, Newcastle certainly weren't it last season and nothing suggests they will be next.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 5:38 pmOnly just had less possession than us, maybe they believe he will help them retain it.

4th on the list of PL appearances for Burnley, ahead of the 3 players you've mentioned.
The only reason they'll pass him in that table next season is because he's left or he'd stay ahead of them I suspect.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Like I said, maybe they believe he will help improve their possession stats etc.
Longstaff has left on a free and they're looking to sign vastly more experienced PL midfielder on a free to replace him.
That's a good bit of business in my opinion.
Re: Hendrick set to leave
From Newcastle's point of view. Yes I agree. I don't mind Hendrick. He's a workhorse. I was thinking more of a point of view from his career. It may work out and be an inspired move. He leaves with nothing but thanks and best wishes from me.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 5:44 pmLike I said, maybe they believe he will help improve their possession stats etc.

Now expected a lot more when he did very well at the Euro's in France but for me he never pushed on .
I would give him my vote the the Irish hide and seek champion while playing for Ireland .
And i stand by what i say even that he should be in his prime i think he is Championship level .
Hey we will soon find out this coming season .

What is it about JH that we are still obsessed with him when he last played for us in March
He played his part, gave his all, was played out of position quite often, got some good goals and performances and also had some quiet and poor games. No different to many of our other signings. Lets now move on-maybe a reflection of how bored some readers are

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Heard it all now.
Hendrick was one of the 1st names on the team sheet over the last couple of years and will be missed.
Re: Hendrick set to leave
With all the competition he had it proves we needed a bigger squad and he was probably at times the hardest tryer and the weakest link.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 3:35 pmI just put his stats up that's all.
He was a good player for us, one of the first picks for most of his time here, which says a lot.
He would do something great then give the ball away carelessly. Very frustrating player and with more confidence sure he could up his level.

Re: Hendrick set to leave
Not relevant - he's been a member of a team during a time when it has never fallen below 40 points in any season, has twice passed 50 points and once qualified for Europe. So the 'only at Burnley' has no relevance at all, written almost as if we are the worst team in the league.

Fortunately the answer should become clear when he either thrives or fails at his new club. I’m in the camp expecting him to fail if I’m honest.

Some real revisionist stuff there.

I liked Hendrick.
He got caught in the middle ground on here where some people went over the top with criticism so others felt the need to go over the top with praise. It started with Graham Branch and moved onto Stephen Jordan.
Always thought the answer was in the middle.
He did a good job for us. Sad to see him leave as he came across as an unassuming character who’d do a job wherever asked.
