England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
England win toss and bat 1st 165-4 approaching tea, Burns, Sibley, Root and Pope the men back in the hutch.
The star performer by a long chalk has been Zak Crawley, and when Ben Stokes comes back into the fold, the captain and selectors will face a tough choice, because all the batsman have scored runs at various points this summer, but they can't all play unless you drop a bowler, and none of them have done much wrong either.
Archer for Sam Curran is the only change for England.
Crawley and Buttler at the crease, and England could do with this pair taking the total beyond 200 at least, Woakes is batting at 7, so it's a relatively long tail.
Tough to say what a decent total is on this slow pitch, but if England can get close to 350 they'll fancy their chances of obtaining a good 1st innings lead, and batting last won't be easy for Pakistan.

Burns not looking nailed on opener anymore and Pope bowled by leg spinner once again, Root so-so but Crawley very promising.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
A nervous tea interval for young Crawley unbeaten on 97, he's played a great hand today, and even from his 1st ball he's looked to keep the scoreboard ticking. Root hasn't really fired this summer in either series, and his form is becoming a concern now, he's nowhere near the top players in the world Kohli, Smith, Williamson on his recent scoring, he did get a good ball today after getting a start.
For the first time in a while England have strength in depth in the batting department, and you'd rather be spoilt for choice than not.
I certainly wouldn't write Burns off in a tough series where the ball has dominated the bat, he's shown enough to suggest he'll score runs at test level on a consistent basis, as has Sibley, whether you could promote Crawley to open is a debate worth having, although Burns and Sibley are decent players who can both play long innings, they can sometimes get bogged down, and that brings pressure on in itself if the board's not ticking over.
It is a concern about Pope, especially with the winter tours likely to involve facing plenty of spin, in both Sri Lanka and India, if of course those tours even get the go ahead, like everything else it's a waiting game.
Edit: Crawley's now made his ton, a class innings, and it just shows how useful that time spent in the middle the other day was.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
When Stokes is back it has to be a bowler who misses out, assuming Stokes is fit to bowl. That would drop Buttler to number 7, where I'd much rather he be than 6. When Woakes plays, him then Bess at 8 & 9 provides some great depth, more so if Curran plays as well.
Selecting just four bowlers is the tricky but but there is a lot of benefit in rotating the seamers to ease the workload.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Buttler's done well at 6 this summer, but generally I'd agree 7 is his best position, the only danger with him batting so low is he can sometimes get left with the tail, but if the likes of Woakes and Bess are at 8 and 9 then that provides amore greater solidity.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 4:40 pmWhen Stokes is back it has to be a bowler who misses out, assuming Stokes is fit to bowl. The great thing for England is there is options to change as the opponents or conditions demand, it's been quite a few years since you could say there's been genuine competition for places in both the batting and bowling, and that can only be a good thing going forwards.
Pakistan need to be careful here, these two could take the game away from them very quickly.

150 for Crawley, and 50 for Buttler 275-4, the new ball is due in a couple of overs, and Pakistan need to make serious inroads with that if they're to stay in this game.

It looks like Crawley is cementing his place at number 3: he is only 22 as well, he could have a great future.

332/4 at close of play. A good day for England and Crawley/Buttler in particular. Should be worth watching tomorrow if you are an England supporter.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
A good day in the end, it was looking dicey at 127-4, but these two have played brilliantly, hopefully Buttler can go on to complete his ton in the morning, that 75 he scored in the 1st test seems to have reinvigorated him, and he's finally showing his skills in the test arena.
From here England should post 450 or more, and that will be a difficult total for Pakistan to match given the strength of England's attack in this match.
Now all we need is Jimmy to take 7 wickets and reach the 600 mark before the summer's end.

Just watched the highlights.
Crawley looks a class act, rightly getting a lot of plaudits but it does make me wonder: how the hell has he only got three first class centuries?

I'm away at the moment so only getting brief updates, glad to see Butler in the runs, and great knock from Crawley too.
A bit of poor weather due, but dont think even that with save Pakistan, can't see this going to the 5th day.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
The showers have duly arrived England have only advanced to 336-4, inspection at 12.10.
But finally common sense has prevailed and if we lose any time in this test match, then play can start at 10.30 the next morning, I've wondered for years why they never brought the scheduled start times forward to make up for lost time, and now they've finally given in too public pressure mainly, I do wonder how much influence the broadcasters have had on that decision, it was farcical in the 2nd test that we only had about a day and a half of play, especially when for a lot of the match it wasn't actually raining. And i don't imagine Sky were too impressed at paying millions for a product that they couldn't showcase.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Batted well in first test too. That was a nervous moment when he was given out but clearly not when you saw it again. Been difficult this morning but he’s added 19 now to his overnight 87. Didn’t look good at 127/4 but these two have done really well.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2020 1:35 pmWell done Jos Buttler, keep his critics quiet for ten minutes or so

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
I've been one of Jos's biggest critics, but he's had a good couple of summers with the bat, and he's made some vital contributions to England victories, even if they haven't always been huge scores, so well done to him for reaching three figures again..Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2020 1:35 pmWell done Jos Buttler, keep his critics quiet for ten minutes or so

Would you say it would be the right time to declare this evening and let the bowler have a go in the last hour , or bat as long as possible say put 650 on the board and hope to bowl the out twice ?

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
373-4 at the delayed lunch interval, and this partnership goes on and on, it's now worth 246, and is England's highest 5th wicket stand against Pakistan.
What's really helped England in this innings is the run rate has been decent, their going at about 3.5 an over which in a test match is a good rate over a 100+ overs.
With the weather forecast unsettled in the next few days, then England might look to get Pakistan in for an hour or so after tea, perfect chance to knock a few cheap poles over now they're demoralised, and have been chasing leather for a day and a half, their body language doesn't look good, and their usual enthusiasm and chatter is notably absent now England have taken the game by the scruff of the neck.

Get as many runs as possible.
With 4 seamers and a spinner we can bowl for two innings straight.
Joe Root will want to make sure Pakistan can't win the game and make sure the series is won for us.

And on Jos Buttler he's now England's highest run scorer this summer overtaking Stokes.

255 was the highest ever 5th wicket partnership for England.
Crawley gets his double ton. Well played sir.
You will be surprised how many top cricketers never got one.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Well done young Crawley, he's played incredibly maturely for a 22 year old, and it's the manner of his innings that's caught the eye, he looks every inch a test cricketer on this showing, and it's not the 1st time he's caught the eye this summer he played really well in the 1st test against the West Indies, and also in the rain interrupted 2nd test the other day, that few hours in the middle has clearly paid huge dividends for him and also England.

Crawley showing his full range of strokes now, including that monster six. Maybe England are thinking of declaring tonight.
Buttler has played 2nd fiddle in this stand, but he's played that role to perfection, and allowed Zak to dictate the scoring.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Well they can play until 7.30 if the light holds, so there's plenty of cricket in the day yet.
Relief for Pakistan they've reached drinks.
The way this pair are batting it looks a good pitch, and it is, but how often do you see a team pile up a huge total, and then the side batting 2nd struggles and suddenly it looks a different surface.
Added to that Pakistan will be staring at 500+ and the prospect of Anderson, Archer, Broad & Woakes plus Bess if he's needed, good luck guys. If they can draw this game from here they'll be doing well, but even then they'll still lose the series, I can't see anyway Pakistan can get themselves into a position to push for a win, so it's a case of somehow salvaging some pride with a battling draw.

It will be a big jump in test ranking points if we win this as opposed to drawing it.
We move up into 2nd place above the Aussies with 319.

Is this a time when you try and hide in the field and avoid the captain's eye.
Incredible innings from Crawley, could he even reach 300, it's possible if he carries on like this.
And almost unnoticed Buttler is nearing his 150.

Lovely innings with shots all round the ground. Certainly looks a class player but I feel sorry for Woakes who is on a hiding to nothing after being padded up for so long.
Really pleased for Buttler though who has given great support.

Shame he couldn't go on to his 300, but what a brilliant innings, which should prove match-winning, England will look to kick on now, and possibly get Pakistan in tonight, they must be mentality drained if nothing else after that partnership.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Yes Buttler and Woakes were watchful in the last couple of overs, but you do wonder whether they'll unleash after tea, Buttler is now the senior partner, but Woakes is also in form, and they'll recall their match winning stand at OT, more of the same will do nicely for England, if they can get around 600 I've no doubt Root will declare and have an hour at Pakistan tonight.
