England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
He is a remarkable athlete, not sure how he compares (age) with other test fast bowlers but few if any would have played as long as Sir James. When will be get the knighthood he deserves?

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Well the talk from the ECB at the start of this summer, was that they were going to give Archer and Wood a good run, to prepare for the Ashes tour in around 18 months, but that's been swiftly reversed, and in English conditions how can they justify leaving Anderson and Broad out, they've both been lethal this summer, and you can bet your bottom dollar touring teams will hate facing them in England.mdd2 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 23, 2020 12:46 pmI doubt he will tour this winter and next season he will be 39 on July 30th. Even playing as a Test fast bowler beyond 35 is an achievement, will the ECB want to play someone who will be unlikely to Tour Oz in 2021 and be nearing 40 by the time the tour finishes at the end of January 2022?
I do agree it's unlikely Jimmy will tour this winter, mainly due to the venues England are visiting, but when he's bowling like this it'll take a brave man to drop him.

A wicket for Bess, so Jimmy can't take all 10 now, what a spoilsport.

Partial recovery from Pakistan 158-5 at tea, the captain closing in on a ton, he's batted really well in the situation, and at least Pakistan have shown some fight this afternoon, it looked like they might get rolled over easily, but they've fought back well in that session, Jimmy still waits for his 600.

On 597 needing three with hopefully another 15 Pakistan wickets to bowl at between now and Tuesday

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
The Burnley Express needs another 3 to reach the milestone. But there's still another 15 available in this match alone. so he'll be hopeful of bagging a few more yet over the next couple of days.
Mind you he's off the pitch ATM, so he won't be bowling for a while. I guess he'll get the new ball later this evening, and that could provide England with some breakthroughs.

100 for Azhar, 50 for Rizwan, this has been a very good partnership for Pakistan, and it's given them a slim chance of batting out a draw, 210-5 but the new ball is only 7 overs away, and that should be England's best hope of nipping a few out.

Woakes again claiming a crucial wicket, he's so underrated in English conditions 226-6, great catch from Jos down the legside, he's a different man now he's scoring runs, shows how confidence plays an integral part in this game, exactly what England needed before the new ball.

What a great catch by Buttler, his previous one wasn't bad either. His keeping has been very good this match, plus a big hundred. Should he still dropped though?

That should have been another wicket for Anderson. Burns dropped Azhar on 120.

Burns drops slip catch off Jimmy......would have useful for Jimmy in particular. As I type, Crawley drops a dolly in he slips off Jimmy.

No not now even with his innings in the 1st test I thought this would be his last series but he's played brilliantly this test match and think he's England's top run scorer in the series maybe 2nd behind Crawley
He'll be back next tour

On the subject of Buttler - just shows what confidence can do. Looks a different wicket keeper than the one we saw at Old Trafford.

All should have been taking but the last one from Broad was downright shocking.

If England go on to win and Jimmy gets to 600 it will be an interesting man of the match debate
Crawley,Anderson or Butler probably in that order though

Thank God they held on to that one. Jimmy gets his five-fer and is two off 600. England enforce the follow on.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
What a surprise they've gone off for bad light, Jimmy got his 5 for, but he's not a happy bunny is he. I assume they'll start at 10-30 tomorrow to make up the half hour today, that's what they promised before the game. The weather could yet come to Pakistan's aid if they can keep battling, the captain has shown the way, now he needs the rest of his troops to mimic him and score runs, it's still a good pitch to bat on, and there must be a question as to how much play we'll actually get in the last 2 days.
Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Eng are 10/11 to win
Draw 4/5
Showers are due, but I'd hope if we can get a few early wickets whenever play starts, it could see a collapse.
Only the weather can save Pakistan here.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Being totally selfish and hoping that Jimmy gets two wickets tomorrow and it can do what it wants then because Pakistan will not win so we win the series.
Having said that, it would be good to get a full day's play because Tuesday looks very dodgy!

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
Could somebody enlighten me as to why the players were taken off the field with 30 minutes still to play because of bad light?
At the beginning of next month the two teams play each other in T20 matches that start at 6pm so the light will be equally as bad if not worse and will be dark by the end of the games. As today they will under floodlights.

It's not really a big issue, but I'm rather surprised that Pakistan are allowed to have a different opening partnership this morning with Azhar Ali having come out as an opener last night - albeit a ball wasn't bowled before they came off.

Another day, another dropped catch.
Almost laughable how bad we have got at catching. Can't get away with it on flat pitches against good sides.

And another catch goes down. 4 drops in 37 deliveries from Anderson.
I had just a small degree of sympathy last night since it was very dark, but absolutely no excuse for Buttler this morning. You can't have your keeper drop routine catches like that and expect to beat the top teams like Australia.
Edit; Matt beat me to it by being more succinct!

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
I wondered about that, apparently it only applies to the opening batsman, as until the umpires officially call play the innings hasn't commenced, hence why they could change the order this morning, if play had started and even a couple of balls delivered then he'd have had to have come out opening the innings this morning, I must admit that law was unknown to me until this morning when the TMS team mentioned it, but there's that many different laws in the cricketing manual, it's only when instances like this occur that you find out all the regulations.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 11:02 amIt's not really a big issue, but I'm rather surprised that Pakistan are allowed to have a different opening partnership this morning with Azhar Ali having come out as an opener last night - albeit a ball wasn't bowled before they came off.

1st wicket but it's Broad not Jimmy, Masood out LBW upheld on review. 49-1 England needed that it was starting to go flat.

True! but most of the interest will surround whether Jimmy can pick up these 2 wickets to reach his next milestone. Pakistan have played well since yesterday afternoon, and the pitch isn't offering much assistance, plus all the weather delays aren't helping England's cause, this just goes to show how vital nicking that 1st test was.

I think the hope that he can get these two wickets is the one real bit of interest now. Shame that the weather has spoiled these last two tests.

It didn't take him long did it, one more to go, but I don't think they'll be playing for long tonight, the light is quickly darkening, just need to hope that they manage some play tomorrow afternoon, the morning sounds like a wash-out.

I think they'll come off soon anyway, even with the spinners bowling, they need to start play earlier in the mornings if possible, what's the point of adding time on at the end of the day when the light's going too be worse.
They're off bad light again, Jimmy will have to wait I'm afraid.

No chance of any play in the morning unless there’s a dramatic change to the forecast. A chance for later in the day.

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd test (Southampton)
The rains forecast to disappear around lunchtime, however the problem will be how much surface water is on the outfield, and the bowler's run up's, that was a major issue in the 2nd test, hence why so much time was lost when the weather was set fair.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 9:57 pmNo chance of any play in the morning unless there’s a dramatic change to the forecast. Hopefully they can get a few hours of play in, England aren't likely to push for victory, but at least Jimmy might reach his magic 600.
Who knows when England will next play a test match, and if they do will Jimmy even be selected. If he doesn't notch a wicket tomorrow, he could be left stewing on 599 throughout the whole winter, and reliving all those spilled catches in his sleep.
There's also 24 overs until the 2nd new ball, and you'd think that's England best chance of taking a wicket or two, the pitch has really flattened out, and the Pakistan batters have looked comfortable for the most part today.
