I gave up. There are no mate in 3 solutions.

There are two mate in 4 solutions. I won't be posting further since I know the answers but didn't figure them out myself.

Yep that works for initial move of KE6. I will look if there are any other defences to QA5 but so far looks like youve cracked it (with a bit of help from my counter play)

Not from E6 it can't!

If the king moves to E6 on blacks first move then the next white move is bishop to C6.

From there the king cannot move to any square without putting itself in check. It's not in mate yet, but it cannot move. So Blacks second move is completely irrelevant so the final white move, queen to D5, makes it mate in three turns.

Think I might have found a defence to Qa5. My reply is bishop d7. Can you mate me in two moves from there?

If you play Ba6 i will play Bb5 to block check

if you play Bxd7 then I play Ke3 with a plan to escape to d3 when your knight looks to mate

I cant work through all scenarios in my head so see if you can find a way to mate me in 3 after Qa5-Bd7

It's because there's loads of answers depending on what black does - it's not as simple as laying out the five moves, there must be dozens of different ways to do it depending on what black tries to do. As long as Queen to A5 is whites first move then white can win in three turns.

Yep youve got C4 and E5 as mating squares and I can only ever protect one of the two. I'll look at an alternative second move but at the moment its well and truly cracked

Yep, good stuff and as you say once you get into it there's prob lots of winning variations from your Qa5
