I gave up. There are no mate in 3 solutions.

There are two mate in 4 solutions. I won't be posting further since I know the answers but didn't figure them out myself.

After Bishop C6 black plays Knight e3. If you play Queen D5 the knight on e3 takes queen on d5

Okay;
Queen in A5
King in E6
Bishop in C6
Knight to E3
Queen to E5 instead.

Edit - it could have always been to E5 - would have saved a lot of fannying about!

King can just take Queen on E5 as it is unprotected

Yep that works for initial move of KE6. I will look if there are any other defences to QA5 but so far looks like youve cracked it (with a bit of help from my counter play)

If the king moves to E6 on blacks first move then the next white move is bishop to C6.

From there the king cannot move to any square without putting itself in check. It's not in mate yet, but it cannot move. So Blacks second move is completely irrelevant so the final white move, queen to D5, makes it mate in three turns.
no because blacks second move would then be f1-e3. white queen goes to d5 then the knight just takes it

Think I might have found a defence to Qa5. My reply is bishop d7. Can you mate me in two moves from there?

If you play Ba6 i will play Bb5 to block check

if you play Bxd7 then I play Ke3 with a plan to escape to d3 when your knight looks to mate

I cant work through all scenarios in my head so see if you can find a way to mate me in 3 after Qa5-Bd7

Queen to A5
Bishop to D7
White Bishop to C4 - check
Black king takes bishop - no option
white knight to e5. mate.

Forget queen to D5, it should be queen to E5 - that prevents the knight from taking queen.

Bishop to D5 - still mate.

Honest, there's nothing Black can do once Queen moves to A5. Me and the dog have played through every permutation.

It's because there's loads of answers depending on what black does - it's not as simple as laying out the five moves, there must be dozens of different ways to do it depending on what black tries to do. As long as Queen to A5 is whites first move then white can win in three turns.
