When all spectators are eventually allowed back, it would be great if Jimmy could be the guest of honour at The Turf for the first match to receive the ovation he deserves from his home town fans.

I agree, all 4 sides would go up. I think they should wait until he retires, hopefully we will all be back in by then (and in the Premier)Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 26, 2020 9:50 amWhen all spectators are eventually allowed back, it would be great if Jimmy could be the guest of honour at The Turf for the first match to receive the ovation he deserves from his home town fans.

Re: Jimmy Anderson
This was the day’s major sporting event, 600 test wickets, yet Maguire’s bad behaviour was the top sports headline in most papers. Ridiculous but well done Jimmy, a credit to town, county and the game of cricket.

I asked about this after he'd got his 500th test wicket and then again when he'd past Glenn McGrath. I know Dave Baldwin instructed another member of staff to arrange it but nothing happened.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 26, 2020 9:50 amWhen all spectators are eventually allowed back, it would be great if Jimmy could be the guest of honour at The Turf for the first match to receive the ovation he deserves from his home town fans.

Fred Truman has a nice statue in Skipton and 'only' took 307 test wickets, surely a bowler who has taken 600 must deserve one in his home town or somewhere.

A statute is a great idea. Where would it go? It would be great if it could be in Burnley, but Old Trafford (cricket) would probably end up being selected.
If was in the town, though where is the best spot, bearing in mind it could assist the town's economy?

Re: Jimmy Anderson
This wouldn't be anything to do with Old Trafford, it would be his town Burnley recognising his wonderful achievement. I don't know where it should go but a central area in town would be only right but also somewhere that visitors would be likely to see it.summitclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 27, 2020 11:18 amA statute is a great idea. He's brought great publicity to our town because of his cricketing career. The town has to honour him now.

The most central area is probably near Boots at the bottom of Manchester Road. It might even get someone to take on the empty old pub as some cafe bar or similar. The Anderson Pavilon or Andersons.

Although admittedly that probably wouldn't be practical for "visiting" it

Re: Jimmy Anderson
He's hopeful of playing on a for a few more years yet, and he says he wants to tour in the next couple of winters, the fact that he's had some enforced breaks from cricket over the past 2 summers, could have prolonged his career.
And the fact that he played in 5 straight test matches, with no apparent side effects, can only encourage Jimmy that his body can still stand up to the rigours of test cricket.

No credit taken at all, if anything, we don't think the town gives him enough recognition, hence the statue idea.

Not disputing that the Burnley Express deserves a statue, but for accurate comparison F S Trueman's 307 wickets were the world record at the time and achieved whilst playing in far less than half the number of Test matches that Jimmy's taken for his 600. Hard call with Jimmy really .
To be honest i an not be too keen on a statue as things can be done to it form what i would call "outsides" but yep a roundabout, street , or close has to be the one for me .

The best sportsman of our town was a product of Burnley cricket club. To dismiss their role in what he has achieved is obscene.
It’s the equivalent of getting a statue of Jimmy McIllroy and saying it’s not a Burnley Football Club issue.

As much the town, and he, felt like he was “one of us”, he wasn’t
This is about Burnley BC honouring a product of Burnley, not a product of Burnley CC
It’s not dismissing Burnley CC as such, it’s just technically it has nothing to do with them if Burnley BC commission a statue of Anderson to be located somewhere in town.
There is nothing to stop Burnley CC having a statue commissioned of Anderson, but that would have to be located on the grounds of Burnley CC, just as there is nothing to stop Burnley FC having one of McIllroy on theirs

It’s absolutely not the equivalent of a Jimmy McIlroy statue. Jimmy McIlroy’s achievements were for Burnley Football Club; Jimmy Anderson’s have been For England. No one has dismissed the fact he started at Burnley Cricket Club, far from it, and the club can feel rightly proud, but Jimmy’s achievements have not been for Burnley CC, they are achievements that have brought recognition for the whole town.KevWebstersBomber wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 3:14 amHow is it not a Burnley cricket club issue?

I was there. It was a shortened game though so not 50 overs. He opened and was robbed of his fifty in the last over by Gareth Halley.Local cricketer wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 11:39 amI remember the 49 he scored that day at Todmorden Tony. But his achievement is taking 600 wickets for England. His achievement is becoming the greatest sportsman the town of Burnley has ever produced. Any statue or road naming has to come from the town to recognise and honour those achievements.

Fair enough, if Burnley CC want a statue of Jimmy, let em have one AND pay for it themselves. Or do they want the good people of Burnley ( as in Council tax payers ) to pay for it, to adorn Turf Moor?

Once I’d posted that I realised how long he played but it was in the 60s that I saw him. I was at OT when he made his final appearance too and I think he got a fivefor in the first innings against Yorkshire.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 3:06 pm"In the sixties" CT? As my dad used to say, if you don’t hit it then he gets you out bowled or lbw because of the way he bowled.
The stretch of road from the tram to the end of the ground is now Brian Statham Way. That road was Warwick Road from one end to the other but it starts now as Brian Statham Way and at the other end is Sir Matt Busby Way.
Outstanding cricketer was Statham.
