Birmingham
Awful new coming from Birmingham this morning. Major incident declared. Multiple stabbings, unofficial reports of fatalities. Sounds like a bar fight has escalated. Not sure if terror related.

Re: Birmingham
Girl who works in one of the clubs there said on the BBC that the atmosphere was different all night. Sounds like it was just one of those nights that developed into a perfect storm based on what she's saying. Alcohol, city centre, social distancing not being adhered to, mass gatherings.
Re: Birmingham
Reports suggest 1 dead and 7 more injured. Good night out in Brum. Also multiple stabbings in London .Whats is the problem with these people?

Re: Birmingham
We failed to introduce tough enough laws for carrying an offensive weapon in public.
We got soft on crime across the board, automatic releases etc.

I’ll wait and see if I’m surprised by the perpetrators of this crime. Doubt I will be.

Re: Birmingham
I honestly think we are the problem.
As a country we are as soft as muck in dealing with knife wielding, gang cultures. More prison cells, and no namby pamby excuses of a deprived child hood. They need taking off the streets. Carrying a knife should be a mandatory jail sentence. If you get caught a second time, double the sentence, and keep doubling it until they learn that carrying a knife isn't worth it.

That also needs doubling for the first offence.

Re: Birmingham
The stabbings do not appear terrorism-related, gang-related or connected to disorder, West Midlands Police said.
The force urged anyone with CCTV or mobile footage to contact them.
Police said they were hunting a single suspect.

Re: Birmingham
10 years of massive cuts to every single part of the criminal justice system might be a tiny contributing factor.
Police cuts, all support services and the actual justice system itself.
Good programme on ch4 last week highlighting the extent of the issue - serious trials such as rape taking 3 years to get to court.
Spend a day down burnley magistrates courts if you want an idea of how messed up the country is....most trials are impacted by a lack of resources in either councils, CPS, probation services etc and the number that have to be adjourned because of something going wrong or not happening in the lead up is incredible....and everyone you talk to says it’s because of the cuts.

Carry a knife = 5 years no parole.
2nd offence, 10 years. Take a couple of weeks to get it thru parliament/lords if they want it. Trouble is all the loony liberals keep shouting about the human rights of the criminal, and forget about the victims.

Re: Birmingham
with or without resources, there's a vile undercurrent in society, knifings, shootings, organised crime hugely increased over recent years. couple that with a judicial system that is skewed beyond belief and the result is the mess we have now.
And, whilst all this occurs, the government stance has been to reduce police numbers drastically. That is insane !!

That's very simplistic, I don't disagree with you in principle, however if you want to increase the prison population, then you have to build more capacity into the system, already our prisons are bursting at the seams, and this has led to serious disorder, and increased attacks on prison officers, who are also stretched to breaking point due to officers leaving the job, or many being off with stress and injuries.bobinho wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 1:37 pmCuts? So if the government are serious about tackling crime, then they need to put their money where their rhetoric is. Given this government's record thus far I wouldn't hold your breath on them doing that.

This isn't just down to the last 10 years, it goes much deeper than that, governments of various hues have kicked the can down the road on rebuilding the Victorian prison system, to make it fit for purpose in the 21st century, hence why it's now buckling under the strain, and in need of major investment.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 1:58 pmThis government have only had full control since last year, give them a chance

He added they had received a number of descriptions of the suspect but would not releasing any details at this time.

Re: Birmingham
How much does it cost to put someone in prison? We have a country running at a serious budget deficit already, with the Brexit still to impact the public purse to any significant degree. Lots of money needs to be spent on the justice and prison systems before you even add a single extra offender to the pot. Then it is over £42,000 per annum per prisoner (Ministry of Justice, 2019 accounts) to keep them locked up. That 5 year sentence comes in somewhere above £200000 per offender - and that is after you build the cell and prison for them in the 1st place.bobinho wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 1:37 pmCuts? The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) David Jamieson said police would be working with the city council to see if there were "any further measures that need to be taken in the city centre", following the stabbings.
A rise in violence was "almost inevitable" due to the pandemic, when people were suffering "pent-up feelings" and some were unsure of their futures, the Labour PCC said.
People could be feeling a bit stabby because of the Covid according the Labour PCC idiot.
