Sad to hear that - the club has been in existence for around150 years! In this day and age you would think £500k isn't a huge amount in football (one or two week's wage for a top Prem player) but it just shows the massive gap between our professional clubs. Sadly there will be more clubs to go the same route as Macc.
Re: Macclesfield wound up
Another sad day for football. All income streams down across the leagues, but the players keep getting paid as if it was business as usual.

At least the greedy have got wealthier. Never mind if the historic and formerly strong league structure collapsed around them.Mayoclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 16, 2020 11:25 amSad to hear that - the club has been in existence for around150 years! As a few others have pointed out, the first thing I thought was 500k is peanuts in todays football but that just shows the gulf between the top and bottom.
Its really sad for their fans, if Burnley ever went under I don't think I'd bother watching any football at all anymore, a lot can happen in 4-5 years so you just never know. (Good god, I sound negative)

Re: Macclesfield wound up
This is a club that has been in total crisis since long before COVID. The players haven't been getting paid, a former manager is still owed almost £200,000 and that's not Sol Campbell.
This, sadly, is another tale of downright bad ownership.

It's fair to say that if we spend money we don't have, on players we really can't afford in the current climate, such as Villa yet again, and suffer relegation. The club COULD go the same way in 10-12 years time.
Then we can all look back and bemoan Mike Garlic for running the club like it was a game of monopoly.
The saying be careful of what you wish for has never been more appropriate.

Sad for their fans but they probably are a non-league club in stature anyway and I’m sure they’ll be back in some guise.

It seems that every club I managed on Football Manager is going under. They were European Champions around 10 years ago!

Haha! I remember a 24 season mega game with my mate - He was Rovers and I was Man U. We're going back to something like 1994 though. We played so many games, the players coming through were computer generated and made up.

Re: Macclesfield wound up
We supporters may think of professional football clubs in other terms, but they are all businesses in a very competitive market. Bad financial management or board incompetence (or both) can cause misery to thousands. Customers get little consideration, especially for a highly loyalty based business. New clubs will be formed and/or raise themselves to the full-time professional ranks, maybe not this year or even the next few years, but it will happen.
I never see anyone saying Amazon should give a share of its profits to shopkeepers, small or large (lots of calls for them to pay the government/taxman though) So why should big football businesses give away even more money to their competitors than they already do - over and above the multi-million taxes they hand over to the Revenue & Customs Service each year?

I'm convinced that the EFL foresaw this when they appealed the Disciplinary penalty which saved Stevenage. As you say CT they had been in crisis for ages.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Sep 16, 2020 11:44 amThis is a club that has been in total crisis since long before COVID. I can't believe this hasn't made BBC football's front page, you have to go down to the national league page to get the story.
Surely any football fan is more interested in a story like this some of the crap on their front page?

Always sad for the fans. As you know I’m no fan of Stevenage because of Westley but the Football League had to appeal that penalty, or lack of it. It’s sad to see clubs go but it’s also sad to see clubs miss out on opportunities because of clubs like this getting away with things.aclaretinstevenage wrote: ↑Wed Sep 16, 2020 7:31 pmI'm convinced that the EFL foresaw this when they appealed the Disciplinary penalty which saved Stevenage. Massive number of fans won't actually give a toss.
A club they've never seen, probably never heard of in most cases that's folded because of poor ownership.
Yes maybe it should be getting more exposure with today's news, it's probably the first of many this next 12 months.

If or more likely when we go down, we need to ensure that the club is sustainable to mount a promotion challenge, but more importantly we need to be solvent, now if that means not throwing millions around then so be it, as frustrating as that is, we have to live within our means.

2 NW clubs now gone to the wall in the last 12 months, it can't be good for the clubs obviously, but it also will have a large impact on the local communities, and will sadly likely knock on and cause further job losses, also most clubs have community schemes in place, and they'll be adversely impacted as well, at precisely the time when they're most needed.
You'd hope that Macclesfield would be the last club to fold, but alas it's unlikely to be the case.

Once travelled up from London to watch the annual pre- season 'Town Cup' game Buxton!
Always liked the short trip over to Miss Rose from Buxton if Burnley/ Buxton games weren't watchable.
Really sad.

Re: Macclesfield wound up
There is still a glimmer of hope for Macclesfield it seems (as long as they don't have the same mess has Bury did) from the Telegraph
Macclesfield Town attract interest from multiple potential investors
JAMES DUCKER SEPTEMBER 17, 2020
Macclesfield Town are attracting interest from multiple potential investors less than 48 hours after the National League club was wound up by a judge over unpaid debts of more than £500,000.
As the receivers descended on Macclesfield’s Moss Rose ground on Thursday in the wake of Judge Sebastian Prentis’ order in the Insolvency and Companies Court on Wednesday, it emerged that as many as five interested parties are monitoring the club’s situation.
Joe Sealey, the son of the late former Manchester United goalkeeper, Les, is understood to be among those. The businessman, who lives in nearby Alderley Edge, previously held talks with Amar Alkadhi, the controversial Macclesfield owner, about buying the club but the talks ultimately collapsed.
Sealey, who is thought to have been exploring the possibility of buying a Football League club in the intervening period, was on West Ham’s books until injury ended his playing career at 22. He sold a sports management business for £13 million seven years ago. It remains to be seen if former Macclesfield chairman, Mark Blower, who had been drafted in to help the embattled club in recent months, forms part of a group interested in taking ownership of the club.
Jon Smart, of the Silkman Supporters Trust, believes Macclesfield will effectively have to start again as a phoenix club, much as Bury AFC was recently founded from the ashes of Bury Football Club, who were expelled from the Football League last year. “I don’t think there’s any other way forward,” said Smart.
Staff and players at Macclesfield first learned that the club was being wound up through reports on Sky Sports News on Wednesday and have yet to receive any official communication from Alkadhi.
Sports Briefing
Despite the club being liquidated, it is understood Macclesfield’s players trained on Thursday.
As of Thursday night, the club had yet to release an official statement of any description and the National League had also still to comment on the matter. Alkadhi told Telegraph Sport on Thursday night that he could not comment.
It is understood that Alkadhi spoke briefly via telephone to the receivers who were at Moss Rose on Thursday and claimed he was planning to apply to rescind the winding up order on Monday. Ordinarily, a court will only rescind such an order if there is clear evidence the company can pay all of its creditors in full.
Macclesfield MP David Rutley said: “I am urging the owner to pay the funds to rescind the winding up order. Then it’s time for a fresh start - I will go on working with interested parties, including the Silkmen Supporters Trust/Macclesfield Town Community Sports Trust to establish the sustainable future we need.”
The court was told that Macclesfield owed £190,000 in tax as well as more than £170,000 to former manager John Askey and a similar sum to another creditor understood to be another ex-manager, Sol Campbell.
Judge Prentis said “nothing gives me comfort that the club can pay its debts in a reasonable period” and that Alkadhi had been given “ample opportunity” to pay off creditors.

Re: Macclesfield wound up
today's announcement about the delay for the return of fans and the consequent probability of the National League postponing the start of their season brings interesting questions to the EFL over Macclesfield - remember the EFL said relegation to the national League would not occur if the new season did not start. Would the High Court have taken the same decision if the club were still in League 2?

And now expelled from the National League. Sad for the supporters, but I do worry about such clubs that come up and couldn't fill a people carrier with enough fans to go to games. The step up maybe achievable quality wise for a time, but a professional club needs more than couple of hundred die hard season ticket holders.
