US Open Golf
A reminder for those with Sky that the US Open golf starts today at the notoriously difficult West Course at Winged Foot. Only ever had 1 under par winner in 6 previous US Opens.
Bryson DeChambeau says he is going to overpower the course. That’s one to get the popcorn out for, I suspect there will only be one winner of that battle and it won’t be him. He’ll win the occasional minor tournament with that approach. That’s all.
My pick - Dustin Johnson. Seems to be hitting it long and straight.

Re: US Open Golf
Collin Morikawa for me at 22/1. Opposite of Bryson with his fairway accuracy which is what will be required at Winged Foot.

Re: US Open Golf
Hard to see past DJ if he carries on his present form. From a Brit POV Fleetwood should go well, but the only winner at Winged Foot is usually the course, mind you these are the best players in the world, so it's only fair their skills should be tested.

Re: US Open Golf
McIlroy going along nicely -3, and just 1 off the lead, Morikawa & Woods picking up useful birdies on the 9th, both at +1.

Done Daniel Berger e/w
Re: US Open Golf
Got a fiver each way on Fleetwood at 35s. I wonder if fatherhood will help Mcllroy relax a bit when it comes to the majors?

Re: US Open Golf
The course is biting back today, shots being shipped left, right & centre, Reed and DeChambeau tied for the lead on -3.
Lee Westwood is in the clubhouse on +3, if this gusty weather continues he might not be too far from the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage.

Re: US Open Golf
So far I made a mess of my prediction with DeShambles but there is time yet.
I desperately hope there is too much grace in the game for the biggest muscles to dictate who wins on even this style of course. Or alternatively, maybe I’m just envious because I’m not a long driver.....

Re: US Open Golf
You should have put him on the BBQ after backing him in the USPGA.
He is currently holding onto joint 38th by the skin of his teeth with 3 to play tonight.
Hope you have a kind bookie paying out e/w 1-50

Hoping anyone but Dechambeau wins it now.

He really is an odious character. The utter bovine excrement a few weeks ago with red ants and the way he haves as if he’s owed a major - not for me Bryson.
Before DJ’s troubles he had a similar air, but I think that was more about media hype than anything else. DJ has come back as a much more muted and rounded player and I’ve grown to really like him.
I can’t see Dechambeau every achieving that.

Re: US Open Golf
Finally USGA got a course set-up right! Long rough, no tricked up greens, although time of year has made a difference. Winged Foot is showing it's teeth. As for DeChambeau, he is an arrogant pr**k, one thing in his favour is his swing is based on Moe Norman, arguably the most pure ball striker ever, a native of my town, Kitchener, Ontario. It'll be interesting to see how Matthew Wolff's nerves hold up in Sunday's round. One guy I hope doesn't win is Patrick Reed, can't stand the guy.

I admire his science, I like how he was last on the range yesterday to get accurate wedge distances with the weather turning colder. But he’s cocky. He is all of a twitch stood over the ball. He cheats (red ants etc). He’s slow. He tries to bludgeon each shot. Basically, you play with him in the monthly medal, you’ll hate it.
Johnson, I had the lucky break of having a good chat with him in 2010 in St Andrews (the year Rory blew it with an 80+ and still finished third, a round I had a ringside seat for, following him all the way, it was the day they stopped play due to high winds). Johnson was a decent guy, a bit “yee hah” in that Bible Belt America kind of way (apologies to him if that is a bit of a sweeping statement). But I liked him, even though I never thought he had the mind of a half a dozen major winner. Very different to DeShambles.
To win - not Rory, like 2010 he has made a career of winning over 54 holes and having one bad round. Not Woolf. I can’t pick anyone who dances like Elvis on the tee. Probably Reed. Solid short game. Good mentality. A knob, but we can’t have everything.

DeChambeau into an early lead I’ve noticed
Re: US Open Golf
Hmmm Dechambeau looks pretty solid. I reckon they need to start rethinking how to set up these courses

Re: US Open Golf
Absolutely nothing wrong with the course set-up, long rough, tough greens. As in all majors, hitting fairways and greens is 'job one'. I'm not a DeChambeau fan, but the guy is so strong, hitting from deep rough doesn't seem to faze him. One thing I dislike is the greens books these guys carry, reading greens should be the players responsibility.
Re: US Open Golf
Yes, I agree with you completely, they should also remove the marshals, if they had to look for the balls that they boomed into the trees/long rough they may think twice before doing so.exilecanada wrote: ↑Sun Sep 20, 2020 9:51 pmOne thing I dislike is the greens books these guys carry, reading greens should be the players responsibility.
Trouble is it would slow play down, and Bryson D is slow enough. Still it would make it interesting.
